DS' DGF is graduating from College on Sunday. I asked her if she wanted me to IRON her GOWN. She said "PLEASE"!!

Does anyone know if I can use Spray Starch on a BLACK Graduation Gown?

I do not want to ruin the gown or leave any like "white" starch marks on the
Gown!!!

Should I just forget the starch altogether???

THANKS FOR YOUR REPLIES!!! :thanks: :thanks:

If it's one of the gowns that is a thin, almost feels like nylon (can't remember the name of the material), then you can't use spray starch. And be really careful ironing it - they're really heat sensitive

My DD's high school graduation gown came with a note saying not to iron it at all. There is nothing on the label that says anything about this though. I'd be very careful. Maybe you could test the iron on a small section?

My brother just graduated from college and I know my mom ironed his gown without starch and it worked fine. A friend of the family also said they just hung it in the shower(This really works depending on the material. It doesn't work with corderoy but worked beautifully on my prom dress years ago in hs.). So while starch probably won't hurt the gown I'd skip it if you're worried.

(I use starch on almost everything I own including numerous pairs of black pants and have never had a problem with it leaving white marks.)

Also to help, I would actually take a sheet or a t-shirt and put it between the iron and the gown. That way it won't melt the gown. We do this all the time with nice formal dresses for women. Keeps the fabric beneath safe.

I'd skip the starch for sure though. I don't think it would be the type of thing you'd want startched in the first place.

The instructions that came with my Ds's gown said to iron on a low setting. I haven't tried yet, but it definitely needs ironing! :)

I would also suggest ironing it inside out, so that the iron does not affect the sheen of the material on the right side. (definitely use the lowest setting that works, that material is generally very easy to scorch)

I think you should iron it inside out without starch and a sheet or tshirt between the material and the iron. keep the iron on a low setting too. good luck!

OMG: THE :disrocks: !!!! OP HERE: Thank you :thanks: all so much...GREAT ideas!!! First of all there are NO instructions on the gown. I looked to see if it stated IRON or NO IRON....ugh....It is NOT thin but a good weight. It does have a sheen!!!

I am going to FORGO the starch completely....I am going to turn it inside OUT...YUP and also use the towel between the iron and the gown and use a LOW setting........ :thumbsup2

DGF also gave me the formal spring dress she is wearing UNDER the gown and I will IRON the formal dress the same way as I do the gown!!! :goodvibes

At the college, they have a Baccalaureate Mass on Saturday where the students AND their gowns are blessed and then DGF needs to wear it again on Sunday for the formal Graduation Ceremony. So I need to make sure it is ironed with precision....ahhh!!! :goodvibes

YOU ARE ALL SO WONDERFUL....I know this was probably corny me posting about the Ironing....but I really need help in some of these areas so I do NOT wreck anything....ugh :rolleyes2 !!! Well now I can't wait to get started!!!
I did buy a few months ago that ROWENTA Iron and I really love it!!! (QVC)!!!
