I get motion sickness on occassion, usually if I am not driving in a car and we go up and down and a lot of curvy's. I can't ride Star Tours without feeling queasy. So, is Space Mountain out for me? I always thought that Space Mountain was a roller coaster with upside down stuff, but was reading a thread that it's not, so can anyone describe the ride? And anyone with motion sickness issues in the car do okay on this ride? I would love to try it, would make dh very happy if it's tame enough for me! lol

Go for it. I havent been to DL since 2003, but I just got back from WDW last year, and I rode Space Mt. more than any other ride at the Magic Kingdom. I know the two are different DL vs WDW space mountains, but I didnt get sick at all. Even though its very dark, I believe (at least I could) still see the track somewhat. GO FOR IT!:thumbsup2

Basically it's more of an "experience" than a roller coaster IMO. It's so dark that you really can't see where you're going (darker than MK's version). The ride takes place in a huge dark room filled with little fiber optic stars" (kinda like Peter Pan's Flight). It goes a grand total of 32mph and has no loops. Just a bunch of banked turns and small drops (The biggest drop is about the size of Gadget's Go Coaster's).

I don't think you will get motion sickness. Though there is one point (which doesn't last very long and you can always cover your eyes) where (going up a lift hill chain) you go through one of those spinning tunnel things. But once you hit the top of the ride, it's just blackness, stars, and music. :woohoo:

My husband has some "problems". Star Tours affected his back and equilibrium in 2001 and I thought he was having a heart attack (white as a sheet) after exiting Space in 2006 but it was his back and head again. He is learning his limits the hard way. It is too bad because if he weren't affected I know he would love to try California Screaaminf and ToT. Don't want to push him and ruin this next vacation.

As a past motion sickness person I have gone on Space Mountain (by guilt more then my own free will) and I did fine. No headaches, upset stomach etc., with that said though, my eyes were closed for most of the ride and I was clutching our 5 year old daughter for dear life. When we got off the ride she said she couldn't breath; no wonder I was holding her so tight. We go on the ride each trip but I only go once a trip! Good luck! Have fun!

I have car motion sickness and many other types of motion sickness actually. Star Tours was a nightmare for me! If you keep your eyes closed you should be ok on Space Mountain. I went 3 times on our last DL trip.
The first time I came off feeling sick, had to sit down for a few minutes afterwards. But then I rode it again 2 more times later (my husband really wanted to go but he felt so bad leaving me out and wouldn't go then, and I really wanted him to be able to enjoy his favorite ride, so I went) and was fine both times. I guess I'd gotten used to it!?! ;) I'd say give it a try.

I went on Space for the first time in many years last month. Right after going up the hill in the beginning, I started feeling nauseous. I don't usually get motion sickness. I felt sick the whole time after that. I kept my eyes open, as sometimes closing my eyes going around curves is worse. There are spinning lights in the beginning, which were the problem. I went again this month and kept my eyes closed till I was past the lights. That worked - I didn't feel sick. There are more lights at the end, so I closed my eyes through that part too.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions and for the descriptions. I'm leaning towards at least trying it once.

My younger dd gets car sick pretty easily and she didn't like SM. It really made her stomach uneasy so I had her keep her eyes closed and that helped some but she wouldn't ride it again. I think it was the combination of not being able to see where she was going and the overall darkness that really bothered her and her stomach. She didn't have problems with any other ride at DL or DCA and she's a roller coasters/thrill ride lover.

I get motion sickness on loads of things from riding in a car to merry-go-rounds and some ferris wheels to coasters and definately Star Tours and Body Wars.
Space Mountain is sometimes a borderline ride. I used to get pretty sick on it but since the reconstruciton of it a couple years ago it is much smoother and I get much less sick and occasionally not sick at all. It is really fun. Give it a try.

I think I will. The being totally in the dark kinda makes me think it may make me feel yucky, but if I do it on an empty stomach, maybe I'll be okay.

Yea, I think this trip might actually be a good opportunity to ride some things since Grandma can stay with the kids if they are too little to ride/don't wanna go type thing, so I'll have to take advantage of it, since it probably won't happen again for a long time.

Dont forget to ride Indy (Is that even possible?) Its a great one! :thumbsup2

But yeah, Space Mountain is awesome! very cool!!! When I get there, Im very excited to see the new upgrades.:hippie:

Indy isn't like Star Tours?? See, I've been to DL so many times and don't know squat about most of the rides. I didn't even know there was an Indiana Jones ride til I found these boards! ;)

Indy is a ride that combines motion vehicles (like Star Tours) with a track. So as you go through the ride, your jeep (pretty intensely) jerks back and forth, side to side while traveling through the course.

You can see everything. At times its dark, but you can still see. Its VERY exciting!!! A must ride. Its not as intense as Star Tours. But it does shake quite a bit. But not enough to make you sick.:3dglasses This is another one I must urge you to ride! You'll love it!

Ride Space Mt. & Indy back to back! I always got a kick outta that.
