My son's class ring arrived from Jostens and it is amazing! We are very happy with it!

However, it is a bit too big. His finger must have been swollen on the day they got it measured. Or with this cold weather we have been having his finger is thinner right now. It is either a full or half size too big. When he sized it with the ring sizer the day we ordered it, we knew it was close, but the first size seemed a bit tight.

We have a few choices, first being send it back to get resized. Second choice being use a ring guard. Or third choice is use silicone or glue gun to make up a bit of space in the ring. It is the Lustrium metal. From what I have read, it should not damage the ring at all, no matter what we do (using silicone or a glue gun).

It fits his middle finger (he ordered it for his ring finger on his right hand) on the same hand, but his knuckle is big and it takes a bit of work to get it over the knuckle. After it is over the knuckle though, it is nice and loose on that finger though. It freaked him out though, when he tried to remove it off that finger last night and he was pulling so much the finger swelled up. We did get it off though, it would have been easier if he would have come to me for advice on how to get it off before he tried himself (it took a bit of baby oil to get it over his knuckle - probably not the best way to get a ring on, I am aware of that).

What would you do? I have the paperwork filled out to send it in on Monday if we do not figure out a solution by then to get it resized a bit.

I don't think he will wear it on a daily basis. Right now he says he is afraid to wear it. It literally fell off his finger yesterday as he shook downward with the ring on.

Jostens resizes for free -- I know it will take time, but in the long run, it will be better than the other solutions you're considering.

If he doesn't wear it all the time, make sure it's in a safe place. We paid nearly $600 for DS' ring (he paid half because he wanted the rose gold), only to find it all over the house when he took it off. Finally, yes, we never did find it - he thinks he left it at a friend's house, but isn't really sure.

That is what we are leaning towards. I have the paperwork already filled out. I just need to make sure we actually get it the right size. I may need to take him to a jeweler in town to get his finger rechecked before I send in the paperwork. We got it for a 7.5, which seemed to be a good size. The 7 seemed okay, but if his finger swelled even a bit it would be too tight. That is the main issue I am having. Right now the weather is cold. His finger is smaller. When he measured for the ring, it was actually pretty hot outside (October heat wave). I just don't want to get it permanently resized and have him unable to wear it when it warms up a bit.

If the fit is close, I think I would go with a ring guard so he doesn't lose it and see how it fits in the summer. He can always have it re-sized later.

Yeah because you said it's so close, I'd be nervous that sizing down might make it too small in the summer. I'd avoid the glue. You can get sizing beads added too if it's close. Just don't size down too much. Maybe just a half.

How long does he plan to wear it? His hands will most likely increase in size as he ages.

Ditto on the bead(s). This type of ring guard works really well for important rings in our family.

Just a tiny silver/gold/whatever bead(s) soldered onto the inside of the ring... (One or maybe two is all you need.) Invisible when the ring is on, GREAT for getting the ring over big knuckles, and really keep the ring on when your finger is a different size than the ring. Small cost at a local jeweler (so not free like Josten's resizing is), but this might be a good solution, if you think his finger size will change over time, since the beads could easily be removed if he grows. Most other ring guards I've seen are a cushion or bar that isn't very attractive and looks kinda uncomfortable.

In any case - good luck!

I'd just get it resized. We had to do that with my sons because they totally mismeasured it - several sizes too big! They didn't charge us for the resizing.

I would go with a ring guard. Have him wear it until the weather gets warm to see how the ring fits. Be sure to take the ring to a good jeweler and have them install the ring guard. You can find some cheap ones online, but I think it's better to get one from a jeweler. I wouldn't have it resized right away. Then he might just find that it's too tight in the summer.

My DH lost about 20 pounds and has a ring guard on his wedding ring. He's waiting to see if he keeps the weight off before resizing his ring!;)

I stuck it in the mail today. He will be way more comfortable he said, if it was resized rather than use a ring guard or any other options. Thanks everyone. Nice to know I was not the only one to mess up while figuring out a ring size. :)

My daughter and I had just filled out all the paperwork to order her high school class ring from Jostens. They had a "family night" where you could also go and get her ring finger sized. Now they did give out plastic ring measurers and my dd and I figured out that she would be size 4 1/2. When we went the other evening to do a check just to make sure they told her that her finger was size 5. The man taking the measurements said the plastic measurers were off. Now I feel bad for the kids who don't make the extra trip into school to double check. I'm glad we went.

I would have chosen resize.

My husband has knuckles like your son. Next time use Windex to get it off. When we replaced our bands for our 10th Anniversary my husband bet our jeweler he wouldn't be able to get his ring off. Jeweler sprayed his finger with Windex and it slipped right off.

I used baby lotion.
