Small contract direct add-on purchase question

Somebody in another thread said something in this realm that got me thinking. And instead of hijack the other thread, I figured I would ask my question separately.

We have a 100 pt resale contract at Aulani (Feb use year) and just got our member # on Christmas Eve! WOO! :rotfl2: Add-on-itis is truly a thing and I finally understand why now. Haha! Down the road, like in a year or 2, we'll probably buy another 100-pt Feb UY Aulani resale contract. That way, if we decide we want to do a bigger trip with more people, we can combine 2 years' worth and book a 2 BR pretty easily.

But...
Let's say at some point, I decide that I want to buy some points at a WDW resort and I want to own direct, if possible, but I don't want to outlay all the cash at once for 150 points. Since we're already DVC owners (even though we're resale owners), could we purchase an add-on contract?

Other questions:
  • If yes, then if paying cash, could we do as little as 25 points direct?
  • Or would it have to be a 50 point minimum?
  • And could we ask Disney to make it a Feb UY like our resale contract is?
  • Could you, for example, purchase 3 separate 50-pt direct contracts in different transactions over time, and the latter 2 contracts would be added to the direct membership #?
  • AND if you do that, does Disney consider you as having 150 pt direct and you'd be eligible for the 'membership extras'? Or do the extra benefits only apply if it's 150 pt in a single contract direct (not 150 split across 3 50-pt direct contracts in the 1 membership ID #)?
thanks for your patience w/me. I'm still really new at this and it seems complicated sometimes.

Yes you can add on since you are a member in a smaller amount then 150 (current rules)
  • If yes, then if paying cash, could we do as little as 25 points direct? Maybe, this has changed recently. I think it’s 50, but could be wrong
  • Or would it have to be a 50 point minimum? I think so.
  • And could we ask Disney to make it a Feb UY like our resale contract is? Absolutely, you might get 2024 points if you act before Feb 2025. Or if they ever bring back magical beginnings you could sell the 2024 points back to Disney. There might be a restriction on how many points you need to buy to trigger this rebate.
  • Could you, for example, purchase 3 separate 50-pt direct contracts in different transactions over time, and the latter 2 contracts would be added to the direct membership #? Yes, they would be under the same use year and member #. However they’d each have a separate contract number encase you want to sell some or all
  • AND if you do that, does Disney consider you as having 150 pt direct and you'd be eligible for the 'membership extras'? Or do the extra benefits only apply if it's 150 pt in a single contract direct (not 150 split across 3 50-pt direct contracts in the 1 membership ID #)? No, current rules indicate if you have a total of 150 points bought direct you would get the benefits. However, they can at anytime increase that 150 number, and until you reach that number, you are not grandfathered in.
I hope that helps!

With no financing, you can buy 25 points add ons at resorts before CCV. Starting with CCV the minimum is 50.

You don’t have to ask. They’re required to do it to maintain same membership.

Yes.

Yes. If they day you get the contract that totals 150 direct points, that’s still the required minimum.

Thanks! That is helpful! :-)

Ok, so this is all really awesome news because I previously thought that the 150 direct point minimum had to be within a single contract in order for you to be eligible for direct 'member extras' benefits.

I was just looking at the "add on vacation points" part of the DVC member website and at Aulani, it WOULD let us purchase a 25 point contract. Their current promotions of $7/point off don't go in until you're buying 100 add-on points, though. And that only saves you, realistically, $700.

Looks like there's a $250 document preparation fee + an estimated $299 of closing costs.

Just a note …if you would ever sell one of the direct contracts and go back under 150 direct contract points you would lose your ‘blue card’ benefits

Just an opinion, but I would probably only add on at Aulani as resale given the huge supply on the market.

It’s half the price and so you can buy 100 points instead of 50.

Now, WDW or DLand…. could be a different story.

I’m right there with you on this! We will probably add on at Aulani with a resale contract. And then I’ll convince my DH that we need some WDW points…at which point I’ll probably start with 50 add on pt there. That will likely end up being about the time that Lakeside Lodge (or is it Lakeshore? What the heck is the name?) comes up for sale. I’d want to own there or at Copper Creek. 🙂

Just make sure you know how the trust model differs from the current model IF Lakeshore is the same association as the Cabins at Fort Wolderness. Nothing is set in stone and we won’t know for awhile. Just wanted to put that as a blip on your radar

That's a very valid point. I have no idea how the trust model differs from the current DVC timeshare model for all of the non-Fort Wilderness DVC resorts.

** edited to add **
We are definitely NOT interested in owning at the Fort Wilderness cabins. My bet is on the DVC Fan podcast crew's prediction that Lakeshore Lodge will be included in the Fort Wilderness DVC trust.

In terms of adding on direct at WDW, I wouldn't want to add on at any of the 2042 resorts. Thought of BLT because you can walk to MK from there, but inclined to NOT add on at BLT direct because the pool isn't pretty. I wouldn't mind staying there once in awhile, but not necessarily as a home resort.

I'd add on direct at AKL in a heart beat because I love that place. But DH says it's 'too far away from everything,' so I'll have to settle on booking there at the 7 month window...which isn't a big deal because I'd want a savannah view room there anyway.

We both really like Wilderness Lodge. Haven't stayed there, but we visited there a couple of times on our last WDW trip. DH likes the food options there, LOVES Geyser Point, likes how it feels like you're a world away from everything. My kids thought the resort was cool. I like how it's close enough to the extra stuff you can do at Fort Wilderness. And of the 2 WL DVC resorts, Copper Creek would definitely be the one that I'd want to buy into instead of BRV.

Also thought about adding on direct at Poly. I probably prefer the new tower over the other DVC rooms there. DH likes all of the food options at that resort. He also likes how it's on the monorail loop.

GF is probably a big no for me.

AKV are not as far away as some make it seem … 17-20 minute bus ride to MK is by far the longest and the other parks are much less. Bus service has been excellent every stay … honestly unless you get one of the walking resorts in the BW/MK areas we have found bus service to be about the same except for some of the bigger resorts which have multiple stops within the resort …
