My daughter wants a hot dog in her lunch tomorrow. If I cooked the hotdog and put it in her lunch would it need a cold pack or would it stay good for awhile in a plastic sandwich box?

She goes to school at 8:00 and eats lunch at 11:45. I make her lunch around 7:00am because we have to gone by 7:30. I just want to make sure she won't get sick from eating it.

Thanks alot for your help!!! :wave2:

My kids eat the oscar mayer hot dogs that are already cooked. I send them in their lunches cold, with a cold pack.

Most hot dogs are fully cooked so if she'll eat it cold then don't cook it first. She she likes it hot I'd cook it and then put it in a thermos to keep it warm. I wouldn't put hot food just in a plastic container and then in a lunch box even with an ice pack. Too many chances for germs to multiple while the food is warm.

What about if I cooked the Chef Boyardee Pasta Shells and put it in a thermos? Would it stay good? She doesn't like the meatballs so I pick them out. Would this be safe? I'm having a hard time coming up with a variety of foods for her lunch. :confused3

I once read to boil water in the am, add to thermos, add cold hot dog and by lunch it will be cooked and water will not be so hot that way it will not burn your child. I thought it was a good idea at the time but I have yet to actually do it! Seems like ti would work well

I agree with this. Hot Dogs are already cooked, they are just cold (sorta like bologna). Heat and put in a thermos to keep warm, with or without warm water. CEDmom is right about germs.

This would probably work but I'd worry about a child trying to get the hot dog out of the water w/o spilling it.

When I send something in a thermos for DD I fill her thermos with boiling water, heat the food hotter than she likes it, empty the thermos and put in the food. DD says it's just the way she likes it at lunch time.

For the OP, some of the stuff I've sent in a thermos are soup, ravioli, perogies, pasta w/ sauce, baked ziti, baked beans, leftover lo mein. Mac & cheese would work but my DD doesn't like it. I've even sent cut up pancakes.

pour boiling water in the thermos and let sit a couple of min, then pout the water out. This preheats the themos and will keep the food hot for a long time.

You can also put the hot dog in some hot soup or chili to keep it warm. Yes, pasta will stay warm in a thermos, especially if you preheat it.

DS used to like to take beanie-weenies. Have you thought about tortilla roll-ups? Or cubes of cheese with some fruit? I've also put a little taco meat topped with cheese in a wide-mouth thermos and sent a tortilla along with a bit of lettuce for a build your own taco lunch. My kids used to have me split a breadstick lengthwise, put in a bit of tomato sauce, pepperoni and a string cheese. Once you microwave it it becomes a "pizza stick". DD used to like a cold grilled cheese once in a while.

We're sort of past this stage. I've got one in college and one in high school, but I could probably come up with more if you need other ideas.

Great ideas!!! Our school lunches are horrible. Fried cheese as a main course one day and chips with nacho cheese later in the same week. Always something very high in fat. I am always looking for good lunch ideas.
