postage for musical greeting cards

Anyone know the postage required to mail the musical greeting cards (6" square envelope)? I know the first one I mailed (months ago) with 2 first-class stamps was returned due to insufficient postage. I seem to recall it was something like 12 cents short which would make it 94 cents and this was before the rate increase.

The USPS website is no help. According to it the postage should be 79 cents (first-class square envelope between 1 and 2 ounces) and I don't think that's right.

I've got a couple to get in today's mail and I'm tired of using 3 first-class stamps if I don't have to.

sorry, i don't know... can't you stop in the post office and have it weighed? Then you will know the exact amount.

If getting to a post office was convenient for me, that is exactly what I would do. I was hoping some knowledgeable DISer would know so I came here and asked.

I wonder if/when the post office will come out with a stamp specifically for musical greeting cards. They really seem to have caught on. The Hallmark store I went to over the weekend had a ton of them!

I asked my wife who works for Hallmark and she said she thought it would be 96 cents with the new increase. (not 100% sure because she's been out on disability leave since the increase took place) She said to put 2 regular stamps on it. The extra postage you lose will be less than the cost of gas to get it to the post office to be weighed.

Darn, DH went thru the mail last night and threw out the envelope for one I just got for my birthday. It was definitely over $1 tho. I want to say something like $1.37. It had the sticker with the $$ amount so I know she took it to the post office to have it weighed.

I cannt help you with the new costs but can tell you now days its not only the weight that determins the cost of mailing things. The thickness and if the card is not somewhat bendable also can cost you more. Even the postal clerks are somewhat clueless with all the new if and buts of pricing. On law firm ive seen gave up on figuring out the new rules and just went Fed Ex. Either toss another stamp on it and hope or try the post office (if the clerk is really up on all the new rules). I wonder what happened with mine? I just mailed two for Mother's Day, and had them weighed at the post office. They were only like 59 cents each. I had brought two dollar bills with me (anything over that, and I need to use my debit card! ) and I remember getting a lot of change back. I was suprised. You are talking about the cards that when you open them they sing, right?

I was going to say the same thing.

If you called the post office I bet they would know how much they are there even without weighing them. I am sure they have had enough people use them that they would know.

Just an off-topic suggestion--don't send the musical cards to people that are hard of hearing--they can't hear them anyway and it is a waste of money . My boss keeps giving me them, I keep telling her they are nice and ask what song is playing since I can't hear it, she doesn't get it.

If by regular stamps you mean first-class stamps, 2 of those only equal 84 cents. And, as I stated in my original post, I had one returned for insufficient postage with 2 first-class stamps on it. But thanks to you (and your DW) for trying!

Yes, I'm talking about the cards that "sing" when you open them. I can't imagine how you got away with 59 cents of postage when I had one returned that had 82 cents on it and that was before the postage increase.

DING DING DING!!! We have a winner. I broke down and went to the post office today and waited 20 minutes in line :::sigh::: to find out it is $1.00 postage for the musical cards. I knew they weighed over an ounce and had an additional fee tacked on for having to be hand-cancelled but there is also an additional fee for it being a "large" envelope.

Funny how many different answers there have been on this. One says $1.37, another 59 cents??? I feel pretty confident with the $1.00 quote as I got the postal worker I consider to be the most knowledgeable in our small town post office. I was worried I'd get Clueless and I wouldn't have believed anything she told me! Although Clueless was next to Knowledgeable today so maybe she would have asked her.

And, yes, they have $1 stamps. I bought 20 of them so I'm loaded for bear.

I just took a musical car to the post office, the postage was over 3 dollars just to mail!!!! The card was $9.00..should have bought a gift!!

It might not have been a large item surcharge. There's a surcharge for square envelopes and another 1st class envelopes that aren't uniformly thick.

ok even though this is a zombie thread, I will set the record straight here for those that may have the question now. Yes non standard envelopes, like square or non bendable envelopes do take the additional postage on them. Also, if they are over weight, there is an additional amount per ounce. And, now if an envelope is automatically over 3.5 ozs, it now is rated at the higher large envelope rate. The best thing to do has already been mentioned here, go to your local post office, try to use the most senior clerk there (Don't get me started on junior clerks) and get your enveloped weighed and measured. Especially brides. I know that square envelope with various enclosures is 'so to die' for! But, they can and do come with added costs. I don't know how many brides have come in and were disappointed when they found out they had to have higher postage for those envelopes. And, the retailer selling those to them never think to mention that those envelopes just might be more costly!
