DSIL just called me with the idea of running a Survivor and/or Amazing Race challenge for the kids when we are on vacation together. I think the kids would really go for it, but we need some more ideas (and quick!) We leave for vacation 8/4, so not much time to think about this.

Here are the basics..... we will have a total of 9 kids (4 boys, 5 girls) ranging in age from 14 to 6 1/2. We are in two cottages that are next to each other. We have a private beach on a lake. We don't have much in the way of watercraft (pontoon boat and a small fishing boat). All of the kids can swim to some degree, most are very good swimmers. None of the kids have any physical restrictions, although youngest boy is very small for his age.
We don't have any bicycles or scooters for the kids, but there is plenty of lawn area for foot races and such.

The ideas we have briefly come up with are things like scavenger hunts, relay contests, etc. (DSIL suggesting an "eating weird things" contest.... like whoever can eat a whole jar of baby creamed spinach.. :lmao: ) And we are considering doing three teams of three each (to help spread out the ages and keep siblings from being together). We want to award points to the teams each day and the team with the highest number of points at the end of week (Friday evening) would win (mostly just bragging rights, maybe some medals....no real prizes).

I KNOW all of you super creative folks here on the DIS can help me out! Thanks in advance for taking the time to reply!.......................P

ETA: Keep in mind.... I am basically lazy and I will be on vacation, so no big "building" projects like you see on Survivor!..............P

Hey.... how did I get dropped to page 4 in just barely 24 hours?? Any help out there?................P

OMG! Can I come? I love those two shows! And I've always wanted to be a contestant.

Let's see, Amazing race usually involves going to one location (front of the cottage maybe) and performing a task (100 jumping jacks?) getting a clue and going to another place ( the edge of the pond- throw in floaties, swim in and retrieve the opposite teams floaties) get next clue, go to table in lawn and build a tower of paper cups and then run to the pitstop.

That was just on the fly here. Now that the thought is in my head maybe I'll come up with something better during the day.

Sounds like a blast!!

sounds like a lot of fun.
we did a scavenger hunt for dd 16th bday the girls had a great time. but we did it in the center of town. Maybe if you knew the area you could give clues to the kids about certain locations and they would have to go there each team had a digital camera
for example they had to go the library and take out a certain book and get someone to take thier picture reading it on the library steps. I know you probably cant do that but maybe have them find a certain object with clues bring it to a certain tree and be pretending to use the object.

none of the locations where ever given we just gave clues another example was they had to get a picture of themselves doing a pyramid in the town gazebo.

or doing piourettes into front of a dance studio.

other clues where riddles to houshold objects that they could find ie paperclips, food items ect

another thought is if you go to Michaels or another craft store they have those puzzles that you can write on. Write a couple of clues with the puzzels then they would have to put the puzzle togther before they even got the clue.

I like the eating baby food challenge!

I know my sister did a scavenger hunt and got a lot of her info online just google scavenger hunt

maybe some sort of endourance challenge who can keep an object ( BOOk or a paper cup of water))on thier head the longest

I'll try to think of some more ideas good luck!!

Tie a rope between two trees, deck, whatever you can find, and have the kids hold their arms straight out in front of them, above the rope. The last person holding their arms above the rope (without touching the rope and maintaining straight arms), wins! It is harder than it sounds.

Take that same rope and have the kids balance on it. The last one still on the rope wins.

I don't know if you are doing teams or not, either way, give kids some glue, scissors and construction paper. Give them a a certain amount of time and see who can make the longest paper chain.

Give each person a piece of rope. Tell them to tie as many knots as they can in the rope, in a certain amount of time. They will think this is the challenge, whoever has the most knots, BUT, then have them pass the rope to the person next to them, or keep their own, and the challenge is to see who can UNTIE the rope the fastest.
