Has anyone had any luck with a specific type of carpet cleaner that removes cat pee smell?

Our 10 yr old boy cat has had some urinary tract issues and has now gone on the carpet several times. We have taken him to the vet numerous times, he has had a $1500 surgery ( :sad2:) , we've put him on prescription food, tried different litter, etc... I think at this point he is just returning to the spot because it still has an odor.

I've had the carpet professionally cleaned (twice) but it hasn't really done anything. I'm hoping someone on this bored has had some kind of success with a cleaner. I'm running out of money and ideas and I've researched it online and there are so many different options. :confused3 I don't even know where to begin. I just hate to keep buying more products if there is one that is known to work.

Please help!! We really don't want to put the cat down, but my husband is really getting fed up (understandably). I'm a huge animal lover so this is very difficult. Any advice is greatly appreciated!!! :sad1:

I'm in the same boat, unfortunately. My cat is 16 years old and decided about a year ago that she was no longer going to use the litter box...EVER! She is not sick...just old and stubborn.

I have a home carpet cleaner, which is used every single day. Luckily, she likes to go in the same spot all the time, so I just keep the cleaner handy and run it every time I notice a mess. I don't even empty the leftover clean water from the carpet cleaner...that way it's easy to just plug it in and run it. I mix some oxyclean in the clean water chamber and normal carpet shampoo in the cleaner container. If you get the spots up quickly, the stink disappears almost instantly. The oxyclean also neutralizes the odor somewhat.

I am so sorry about your cat. I have had similar issues and I use Nature's Miracle. I have found it at Petco or Petsmart. It is a bit costly but it works. It got out the smell after my dog tried to make friend's with a skunk :scared1: . It will work.

My cat had a similar medical issue last year conveniently enough the day we brought our newborn daughter home from the hospital. She picked one corner of the carpet and went there. To be honest there is still a slight smell there if you get down on your hands and knees and stick your nose on the carpet but I don't notice it in the room. What we did is have it professionally cleaned and we also used a black light to determine where she went and repeatedly used an enzyme odor remover on the spot. I don't know the name of the stuff we used but we got it at Petsmart. I heard it's important to get the enzyme stuff as well as completely soak the carpet so that the cleaner goes into the pad as that is where the smell is probably coming from. Another trick I've learned is if you think your cat is going back to the same spot because of the smell is to tape down aluminum foil to the carpet where the cat is going. Apparently they don't like the feel of the foil and will stop going there. Good luck! It's such a horrible/embarrassing problem - you love your cat but hate what they are doing to your home.

I use plain white vinegar for dog urine. Maybe it will help with the cat...worth a shot and its cheap!

There is an enzyme cleaner called Nature's Miracle that works wonders. It breaks down the ammonia which causes cat urine to smell so bad. You have to soak the carpet down to the pad for it to work. It's sold at most pet stores (Petco, PetSmart). Hope this helps! I'm sorry your :cat: has urinary tract issues.

The blacklight is great for finding the spots. We used Nature's Miracle too, but the trick is, you have to douse the area and make sure the pad is soaked. Any trace of urine smell and they'll come right back to it. And they can smell what you never will. If it's by a wall, I'd consider pulling up the carpet and replacing the pad in that area, then putting the (cleaned with Nature's Miracle or something similar) carpet down again. Pad is cheap. Good luck.

White distilled vinegar..pour some on, rub it in, blot it up. When it is almost dry sprinkle a good amout of Baking soda on the spot and let it dry, then vaccum it up..the smell should be gone, and you didn't have to use expensive chemical to do it!!! :P

I have been dealing with this problem. A black light and Urine Gone has really helped.

We are fans of OUT! Pet odor and stain remover from Walmart. It has a pink cap and it is reasonably priced. We had a situation about 7 years ago where our cat was accidently locked in the bedroom for 3 days. She proceeded to urinate all over my $1000 (at the time) pillowtop king sized mattress. We SATURATED the mattress and let it air dry for about a week. (This of course happened right before Christmas, which made matters worse) Voila, no more cat odor and the cat never went back to that spot. We have since gone to a memory foam mattress, but we didn't have any problems after using the OUT! I would highly recommend you try it. The black light is also a good idea, because you can find out exactly where the spots are. Also, you need to make sure to saturate the stain down to the padding/concrete. Any residual odor will bring the cat back. Good luck.

We had a simialr problem with DDs cat. I used Totally Toddler. It is an enzyme cleaner like natures Miracle but cheaper. You can find it near the baby section. Don't forget to soak the pad. I even pulled up the carpet and pad and soaked the wood underflooring. My vet also said that if you put saran wrap over the spot and then use aluminum foil that would help deter the cat. The vet also said they have a plug in thing that emits a cat phermone that deters them from urinating as well. The plug in was costly about $60 to start and about $15 a month after that. GOOD LUCk!

A cheap option, if all else fails, is to buy a bar of fels naptha soap from the laundry aisle and grate it into hot water. Then saturate the area of carpet (including the pad) with the soapy water. Use a shop vac or carpet cleaner to get all the dirty water out of the carpet and then repeat with more soapy water made with the grated fels naptha until the water is clean coming out of the carpet. When the carpet is totally dry, you can sprinkle moth crystals in the area for a few days/weeks to deter the cat from coming into that room. Once the odor/scent is gone and he's offended by the moth crystals for a while, he'll stay away.

Fels Naptha costs about $2. One bar should clean a pretty large area. I'd test a small section first to make sure it doesn't bleach your carpet but I use it on my laundry and I've never had a problem.

Unfortunately, in situations like mine, eliminating the odor in the area or making it smell unpleasant to the cat is not really a solution. If she doesn't go in taht one spot, she'll find another one. She just flat out refuses to use the litter box anymore. I'd actually rather her continue to use that one spot, because at least then I know where it's going to be. Getting rid of the cat is not an option...she's 16 and been with me since she was 2.

I'm happy to read that white vinegar works, I'm going to try that tonight.

As far as the OP goes, hopefully the tips here will help you clean up the mess. For future messes, have you tried putting down a "wee-wee pad"? Maybe your cat would go on that, and save your carpet?

I just wanted to stop in to say how much I appreciate all the responses to my question. I know the easy solution would be to just get rid of the cat and replace the carpet, but that just isn't a possibility for me (dh is a different story :sad2: ) It also makes me feel better to know that I'm not the only one who has gone through this problem.

I tried the vinegar last night (lots of it) and now I'm going to sprinkle some baking soda on it. If the smell persists, I will try some of the other suggestions!

Thank you all!!! :disrocks:

I've had good luck with hydrogen peroxide with a smidge of baking soda...you may want to test a small area first to make sure it doesn't change the color of your carpet. Just soak the area and as it dries the smell leaves too.

I have the same problem with my cat. I have been using a solution of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and a small amount of ajax dish soap. Seems to do the trick.
Mine will also find a different spot but her favorite is the garage door. We have to keep all the door to any rooms closed at all times. At least it reduces where I might find a new spot.

Ooh, ooh! What's the ratio of hydrogen peroxide to baking soda?

And sorry for being duhhh, but where does one get hydrogen peroxide?
