Official 2024 Universal Studios HHN 33 Thread

since I wasn't firing on all cylinders, wound up cutting trip short due to stupid covid. this makes it difficult for me to give HHN a fair & solid assessment this year, as it truly takes multiple run thrus of a house to fully see its treasures or lack thereof

insidious knocked it out of park!

2nd run thru of Goblins and I 'got it'. an unexpected gem for me. happens every year. :)

ghostbusters a lovely set piece, U monsters needed editing-had so much potential. a quiet place was a surprising disappointment.

i do think the monetary cutbacks/quality were, readily apparent. repeated empty boo holes & uninspiring themes, especially the scare zones. it continued with the tribute store design, selection/quality of merchandise

the scareactors surely gave their all, I appreciate their dedication and heart.

HHN is seriously diluting their secret sauce by trying to appeal to the broadest of audiences. they need to adjust course and revert back to an event targeted at adult horror fans

SW HoS has gotten better every year! i hope they hold true to their values going forward.

So now that is is over this is how I ranked the houses. I wrote this when I got back in September but waited to share as I did not want to spoil HHN for anyone. Sounds like my experiences was not all that different than others - and mine was before the storms.
I went for 10 nights of HHN with express and did Stay and scream several times - so I did most of the houses at least 10 times.

Would love to get others onions now that its done.

1 - Insidious - well done house - the house design itself in nothing special and reuses much from the previous insidious house from what I can recall - still 90% good walkthroughs - even the mediocre walkthroughs were fun. (I think this was not all that different than a previous Insidious house though - just it was the best of what we had this year)

2 - Ghostbusters - its just fun - a couple of good scenes - unfortunately there are often missing key SAs - for example Slimer (Since replaced with a prop of some sort) - when the house is 100% its really good. Still have not seen the movie.

3 - Goblins Feast - great house - way too short - also so many walkthroughs with missing SAs. When its running at full its great - but even at 100% its way too short.

4 - Slaughter Sinema 2 - Lots of good stuff here - its a lot of fun - but more than once I had an entire scene with no SAs at all - I can see a few of these being houses in the next few years. I had no SAs in the Mardi Gras scene one time. Only Mr or Mrs Clause in the Christmas scene a couple of times - the elf was missing multiple times as well. Missing characters in the Heavy Metal scene......

5 - Triplets of Terror - much better than I was expecting - You need to understand the backstory though. There may be a podcast out there - but I guess Spotify said it was too disturbing to post. That came from the guide on the Behind the scenes tour. Oh and the dog it back - both parts this time.

6 - Eternal Bloodlines - way overhyped - it was just OK - a couple of good scenes if you are lucky enough to catch them - I did this house at least 12 times and only got the wolf scene once - and I was always walking slow through that scene as it takes time to reset. the other problem is the Bride was missing from multiple places multiple times so you don't even get the story - just all of a sudden at the end is the bride - without the behind the scenes tour you want get much of the story IMO. Even more annoying she would not be in the scenes but then she would be at the end as you exit.

7 - Major Sweets - Its Ok - but missing SAs are again a big problem. Miss treats was missing a few times from the beginning and almost always from the middle. It also feels very short - when you come out I am expecting a second half like other houses in that location. Also the banging was a bit much - especially if you get stuck in that hallway - which seems to happen regularly

8 - Monstrous - was expecting so more from this - one issue yet again was missing SAs - when the main character in a scene is missing more than once and in multiple scenes it really stinks. Yeah the puppets were pretty cool.

9 - The Museum - just does not work at all - even after the behind the scenes tour - its just not quite right. I still put it ahead of a quite place as it was a good attempt and there are a few cool scenes. I skipped this most nights - but tried again on busy nights just in case it got better. I really wanted to give this one a chance as I was really looking forward to it.

10 - A quite Place - well they tried something different and it just does not work - I skipped this many nights - but tried it again on busy nights just to be sure. Too many animatronics and or puppets - if you want to call them that. Did not enjoy it at all.

So in general pretty disappointing as I already stated many times missing SAs was a big factor.
Personally I would recommend against stay and scream - yeah you can get the houses done quickly - but the SAs are much more likely to be missing from the house early as they are still getting makeup on or running late or whatever.
If you do it and have express don't waste your express pass during stay and scream - come back and do the house later with express when its full.
If you just want to say you did all 10 houses and don't really care then its fine - and there are a lot of folks who are fine with that :(

Scare zones - I'm not even going to bother - I know I've said this too many times they are just selfie zones for the most part. Did not spend much time in any of them as they were lame - in the past I would spend hours in them.

Didn't do the show - I know its meant to be good and I watched it on YouTube - I'd just like something different.
I'd much prefer something like the Beetlejuice Review or a show with the classic monsters or instead of the Blumehouse selfie zone maybe a Blumhouse show.

Bummer to hear you were sick...so discouraging when you're on vacation. I hope HoS stays the path as well - especially since they already have a great event geared just for toddlers and kids - their Spooktacular. (Which is so fun to attend: seeing all the littles in costume, having a blast.)

I attended HoS its first year and 3rd year (this year). Year 1 was fun, but they really stepped it up big time since.

I really don't understand why UO doesn't do a kid-themed halloween event as part of regular park admission in UO or IOA and restore HHN to its former glory.

Invest a bit of effort in scare zones, offer a series of cover bands like Mardi Gras, do a horror-themed laser/fireworks show. I feel like they're just squeezing as much profit as they can from a tired event.

I heard one of the HHN post-event survey questions was: "Were there enough instagrammable moments for you?" :sad2:

THAT speaks volumes about their focus - and what's wrong with this event.

Yeah this is really frustrating. The had the HHN bar area and they could do something similar over by the Fanta bar in San Fran and then let the scare zones be scare zones.

One of my biggest gripes with the food was it was more about posting the photo than the quality of the food.
We have discussed before but the smore was awful but made for a great photo.
Its not just during HHN, much of the food around the parks or during Mardi Gras was the same.

After trying the corn dog I pretty much gave up on HHN food - best decision I made during HHN.
Ended up going over to Vivo before HHN several nights and getting a really good pizza.

Here are my HHN thoughts as a first timer who only did each house once (because I was at the beginning of my runDisney trip and needed to save my feet for the races) I went on October 30th and had express and scream early.

General thoughts: Your experience can change so much just based on who's in front of you/behind you in the line. Here are the houses in the order I visited them.

A Quiet Place: I started with this one and ended up behind a party with someone in a wheelchair. This made the whole experience really difficult because they were having a lot of trouble maneuvering it and there was a lot of starting and stopping, so I had to pay more attention to them than to anything happening around me.

Insidious: So so so good! I had the right mix of people around me, and it was so creepy. As a single guest, the rooms with the mannequins just standing around were extra creepy because I wasn't always sure "is that the guest in front of me, or is that part of the house?"

Triplets: kinda meh. I didn't get many jump scares in this one, and didn't entirely get the story

Ghostbusters: kinda fun, but there was a group of girls behind me jumping and screeching at nothing all the time that ruined it

Candy Factory: a few good scares, but another wheelchair party ahead of me, so a lot of starts and stops.

Slaughter Sinema: I think this could've been good, except that the couple in front of me were A) extremely tall, and B) the girl was clinging to the guy's back the whole way, and he was holding her hands on his chest, so every time we went through the curtain things, they just let them slide over his shoulders, instead of parting them, so they came down and smacked into me.

Goblins: I got some good scares in this one and liked it a lot

Eternal Bloodlines: it had potential, but didn't quite get there.

Museum: a few good scares, but not a great story

Monstruos: the story was completely unclear to me, but the scare actors did a great job scaring me, so that made up for it.

Scare zones: I missed Torture Faire. I went through Blumhouse while it was still light out, so not scary at all. Swamp of the Undead was really good because it was full-on dark and the actors just sort of walked through (until they didn't) so you couldn't necessarily tell if the person coming through the dark and mist was a guest or an actor that would scare you. Demon Queens was pretty good, and they definitely knew who to go after for the best reaction. Same with the Duality of Fear people with the chainsaws.

I missed Nightmare Fuel because the timing just didn't work out when I was back there and I didn't feel like sitting around to wait for it.

All in all, I'm not sure I would do it again during a Disney vacation, but maybe if I were to do a fall Universal-only trip in a couple years.

Edited to add: sometimes the creepiest thing were the uniformed employees who just sort of stood there in the shadows, and I thought that was funny

January seems a wee bit early to dive into the HHN 35 speculation pond…

Found these pics (of unknown origin) floating around on social media interesting. Supposedly building permit info & code names that some think may be clues to the specific houses.

Yeah there is already a ton of speculation on what many of these are - was also surprised to see it so early but I guess its not that unusual. One of the "better" influencers was saying Mike Aiello may be me involved this year now that Epic is close.
So even though I keep saying I am not going this year - they seem to pull me back in with some of the rumored houses

They have announced next years dates -or at least the date range anyway.
Select Nights Aug. 29–Nov. 2, 2025

I assume this is part of the new Epic experience so people can plan better.
I think they have announced dates for all events for 2025 - for example Christmas is Nov. 21–Dec. 31, 2025.

Have been asking this forever - now if they can get better at concert dates and performers that would be great - I know sometimes they just don't have the confirmations - but it is frustrating to plan for Mardi Gras and miss a concert you want to see by a day or two - not that they have had much I am interested in the last few years.

I think the dates were pretty well set this year anyways. Starting the weekend of Labor day seems to be working well for them, no reason to muck around with that. With Halloween on a Friday, no way they wouldn't stay open the next 2 days for the weekend crowd. But it is nice that they announced it earlier.

Yea, was about to say something similar, the range are almost the same (labor day to Halloween). Usually the only unknown is how many Nov dates they do if any.

I'm still considering taking a year off from it. Last year just left a bad taste in my mouth. I may go one night if there's an IP that really excited me. But def won't be buying the multi night pass this year

Same here, downgraded our AP so we wouldn't even have the free ticket.

Hurray for dates. My son will be starting college in the fall, and not sure if he'll want to go. His fall break will be first weekend in Oct. This past year we went that weekend also, and while it wasn't Columbus day, based on crowds, ticket prices, and hotel room prices, it was still so busy, BUT also WET w the hurricane approaching....rained almost the entire night. I'd rather go later in Oct, not around the holiday weekend, if we can manage. but my AP expires first week of Sept, so I could try to go then.....

Yeah - I'm still not sure what I will do - not happy with last year at all and want to skip it - but there is also Epic.
I did not renew my AP after the debacle with Epic tickets, but I really want to go to Epic.
If I make the trip then I'll have to buy the HHN ROF if tis available - with express

I'm thinking I'd rather do Oktoberfest this year

Can’t say whether it was same in past as have never sprung for Premier AP…was somewhat surprised to see they have to make a reservation this year to use their free tix.

Veering off topic…

While we could buy our Epic tixs, wanted to visit with GD for 4th of July trip. (Over) waiting for them to decide if they are going to toss out single day tix or not.

Not about to buy the multi day tix or an U AP as she just doesn’t have the time/ability to visit as so busy with HS including activities. Already buy her a WDW AP, that’s her focus for the races. She wouldn’t do justice to a U AP.

Vent over, just another brick in the wall, along with how HHN has so drastically changed.
