Per Blog Mickey, new trial of resort airline check in & luggage service happening. Limited trial, only Pop for now, all values in April. Only Southwest Airlines participating right now. Being run by the same man who owned the Bags Co that did it before.

Starting today, a very limited pilot of the Resort Airline Check-In offering is taking place at Disney’s Pop Century Resort. The pilot is only at Pop Century for now, but it will be rolling out to more Value Resorts in April.
The Resort Airline Check-In service is extremely limited during the pilot, with Southwest Airlines being the only supported airline at this time. If there is more interest in the service in the future, it will be expanded to other airlines.

In terms of the logistics of the service, it is only being communicated to guests via word of mouth to keep it manageable during the limited pilot. Guests who qualify to use the service can head to the Luggage Assistance desk in front of the resort. From there, Cast Members will be able to help guests with the process.

In order to qualify to utilize the service, guests must be staying at a qualifying resort, and be checked-in with Southwest Airlines. That means that guests will have to have checked into their flight and (soon) have paid for their bags. As long as there is a green light from Southwest, guests can utilize the Resort Airline Check-In process.

Right now, we’re using the term Resort Airline Check-In simply because it’s familiar, but there is no signage or marketing collateral naming the service. A third-party company called Bag Check is handling the process. From our research, Bag Check is a new company that has roots in the former Resort Airline Check-In process. Bag Check owner Craig Mateer is the former owner of Bags, Inc., which previously handled Resort Airline Check-In and more guest services at Walt Disney World.

Currently, the service is only rolling out to Value Resorts at Walt Disney World. That said, guests only need to be staying at a Value Resort on the day that they plan to utilize the service, which means that you could spend the majority of your vacation at a Deluxe or Moderate Resort, and then switch to a qualifying Value Resort on the day of your departure.

Once guests check their bags in with the service, they will no longer be able to access their bags. This means that guests should be sure not to pack anything that they would need to access after checking in their bags.

In terms of the check-in process, guests with flights before 1pm will need to check their bags the night before they depart. For flights after 1pm, guests can check in their bags on the morning of their flight at least 4 hours before the flight.

Finally, and this is the big one, the service is complimentary!

Said this in the news thread but this is a huge win, I actually miss this benefit more than DME. I've since shifted to doing curbside check-in at MCO but it will be so nice to be able to do it at the resort again. I really hope it's successful and they roll it out everywhere for the full slate of airlines they used to have.

Great news!

I don't like having to pack bags and check them in THE NIGHT BEFORE when flying before 1 PM,but will still be worth it.

I literally am shocked Disney would bring this back after getting Guests accustomed to not having it!

Definitely does provide hope for a possible return of DME and longer Resort Guests' time in the Parks.

3 hour PM Extra Magic Hours anyone?😀

Let's get this back at every resort. I feel like SWA wasn't included in the last iteration of this pre-covid? Maybe thinking of another airline... but hopefully this is utilized and well received so that it can be rolled out to the other resort tiers. The other thing is that hopefully they give claim checks with contact phone numbers just in case the bags are lost.

Not necessarily. Bags and transportation were handled by two different vendors contrary to popular misconception; bags were handled by Bags, Inc, transportation by Mears. This is why during the re-opening period DME operated without RAC or bag delivery, it's because Bags, Inc. went under during the travel pause. And unless Disney can guarantee Mears more money via contracting out vs. what Mears makes with their own paid replacement service or they can find a new vendor for a shuttle service that can operate at Mears' scale, I would not hold my breath waiting for DME to come back.

PM EMH were objectively terrible though and I don't understand why people are clamoring for them to come back besides FOMO and rose colored glasses making them forget how bad they were towards the end. EEH works so well precisely because of the limited scope. Disney isn't giving up monetizing AH tickets either.

I'm shocked this isn't costing the guest anything. I wonder who is paying for it and how much? Neither of the companies involved seems much on spending money for a strictly better customer experience. I suppose it could be SW as that would cut down on the number of passengers checking in bags at MCO.

I guess that would make sense as to why it is starting with only SW, if Bag Check is getting the airlines to pay. I believe under the previous iteration, Disney was paying for the service.

Bags inc never went out of buisness, like mears there contract ended. There luggage service was/is still at MCO even during coved. Bags, inc has handled Disneyworld valet services even after they ended there luggage service however Disney has just announced they have hired a different valuet service company after bags inc has handled it for the last 20 years.

It's my understanding that the technology that linked DME and resort luggage checkin was propritary to Bags, inc. and had nothing to do with Disney. The new service is being run by the former owner of Bags Inc. so if he can replicate what his company previously build then there's a chance DME comes back. There's no chance Disney will spend the money to build there own system.

I don't think the value prop is there for Mears or Disney in order to bring back DME. I can think of one other bus company that has a large enough presence in the area and is big enough overall to take it over and the same question exists. How much is Disney going to pay per passenger? In order for DME to come back, the number that Disney is willing to pay has to be at least close to what Mears is charging now, $34/person, how much will Disney raise rates to cover that cost?
I would expect that a service like is Bags, Inc could flourish, but it would have to be a service paid for by guests. I would pay $10 per bag to not have to haul it through the airport, wait in line to check. If you get 50 bags per truck, that could be pretty lucrative.

A great start to returning things lost! Top on my wish list is DME! I don't mind taking our bags with us to the resort as we enjoy having our luggage when we arrive but would prefer not to pay for this service. Greatly miss DME!!!
No thanks to DME. I hated the mutiple stops - watching others get faster to the fun 😆 🤣 while i was stuck looking at blue seats for another grueling 10 mins. 😂
But I won't contest it coming back because It HAS helped so many folk.

But not having to go to the Luggage Carousel and then having my Luggage appear in my room saved so much time and hassle!!!!

That's also not a service they are offering with this trial. Nor was it part of DME. That portion of the luggage service would need huge buy in from MCO or the airlines themselves to have happen. I don't see that happening ever again. Taking the bags from the resort and just dropping them into the pipeline for the carrier at MCO, that's feasible.

Didn't Bags Inc lay off a whole bunch of people during covid? If they didn't go under they were in really dire straits.

The problem I see with DME coming back isn't with the technology so much as who is going to actually run the buses? I don't see Mears contracting with Disney again to create a free alternative to their paid service. And they seem to be the 800 lb gorilla in Orlando airport transportation. Their only other real competitor, Sunshine Flyer, they ended up buying out.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see DME come back even though we have gotten so spoiled by private door to door transportation at this point I'm not sure we'd go back to it. It would be a huge deal for families with small children especially and would earn them some good will back. I just don't see how it would be possible from a practical standpoint.
