(I'm talking the liquid, not the powder...) I saw these at Wal-mart the other day, and frankly, shelf-stable liquid milk just freaks me out. They are like these little juice-box things made by Horizon Organic (I think?) - all organic, sealed a special way, shelf-stable milk - no need to refrigerate until after opened??

It just seems so weird. :scared: So I was wondering if anyone else used these before and can maybe reassure me it's ok? Of course I imagine it wouldnt be on the market if it wasn't safe.... but who knows. We are packing juice boxes, cereal and breakfast bars, so I thought I'd pack this as well for breakfast.

Thanks for any input!

My DD is alergic to cow milk so when we travel we have to pack soy milk since it is not so easy to get everywhere. We usually use a "shelf stable" brand for when we travel. We get both the single serving ones that look like a juice box and larger boxes that can make about 4 eight oz cups. We have never had a problem with them. Just make sure to refridgerate them after you open them.

Shelf stable milk has been ultra-pasteurized to kill the bacteria (super heated) so it is perfectly safe. I put them in DD's lunchbox every day (much healthier than juice!). The ultra-pasteurization process does alter the taste a bit, which is why most milk is just pasteurized, but DD does not complain!

I always keep a quart of shelf stable milk, usually Parmalat, in our basement fridge at home for when we run out and it's inconvenient to get to the store (I like to keep it cold as that's the way we drink it, even though it doesn't need to be refrigerated until after opening). I also keep the juice box sized single serving ones in the pantry to toss in a cooler when we go to the beach or park.

It's real milk and it tastes the same as any other milk. It's all about the way-cool high-tech packaging. I find it to be very convenient! :thumbsup2

I'm actually stocking up on them now for our July trip. My kids love them. No worries they are fine! :goodvibes

We have had the small horizon Organic milk and the kids love it. But if you don't want to bring it you can buy milk in the gift shops at your resort. I would worry about the cartons getting squashed if I was flying. It would make a mess out of the suitcase! :scared: Are you staying on site?

They are great for the diaper bag or if DD has to go to the babysitters and I don't want to mess with a thermos of milk. I just put it in the refrigerator when we get to the babysitters, and if she doesn't drink it I can take it home and put it back in the pantry.

They are really practical!

We use these all the time! Sometimes we just need milk for coffee or cereal and we don't have any in the house. These are great to keep on hand.

It's organic milk for goodness sake...I have given them to my 2 year old many times, he is still alive :rotfl:

I do have a hard time finding plain shelf stable milk...they always seem to be chocolate or strawberry or vanilla (even the soy and rice ones are this way...but I don't want soy or rice milk anyhow)...

We definitely plan on bringing some on our trip to Disney this May though :)

BUT you may want to check the milk prices at the resorts b/c those little suckers are expensive...to freak you out further :), I only buy them when they go on manager's special at my local grocery store and even then they are about $1 each for a tiny carton

I have given them to my kids some. They like all of the flavors including the plain. We are not huge milk drinkers, but they do like them. My 4 year old loves the strawberry.

Just an aside... Even the large containers of Horizon Ultra Pasteurized milk in the refrigerator section says on the back "No refrigeration necessary". I assume it it because it is ultra pasteurized and in the paper milk cartons :confused3 I read a blog about eating all whole foods called Kelly the kitchen kop and she mentioned it on there. I looked the next time I was at the store and sure enough even the half gallons say it.

Have fun on your trip. The milk will be fine :)

anyone know how much milk (by the gallon or quart) is at the resort gift shops?? We are staying at Pop...

The first time I lived in Europe (Spain) most milk was shelf stable sold in boxes and that was over 15 years ago (same thing in Germany now). Point being, this is nothing new and has been around and working just fine for a looooong time:thumbsup2

I absolutely stock these in our house for emergencies. We had a power outage of 6 days this year due to an ice storm and we still had milk to drink. It keeps well and taste fine. Once it's opened, I would refrigerate.

We keep these in our hurricane box. It's the Parlimat (or something) brand, and tastes just like regular milk.

Oh they're great! I use them for outings. Much easier than having to refrigerate them. DD likes the flavored ones, they're like a little 'treat' when we go to Target or Starbucks. But I do buy the 3 packs in grocery stores. :thumbsup2

At WalMArt it is on the aisle with the organic food. There is also some in the baking section. My DD can only have rice milk and this is the only way to buy it that we know of. We buy a big container of enriched organic and a small container of enriched organic vanilla. We put maybe 1/4 of vanilla and the rest is just rice milk into every cup. Gives a little flavor.
