I have a surgical scar from the placement of my port-a-cath and now that it's time to break out the swimsuit, and I actually feel like it, I'd like to make that scar less obvious. I'm hoping someone can tell me it will really work!!

I have a scar from a chemo port. I tried Mederma and I don't think it really did anything. My scar isn't too bad though and doesn't bother me much.

I just had surgery and my surgeon said that silicone sheets are the best scar treatment. A little expensive though.

if its a new "scar" do NOT let the sun hit it for at least a year even with sunscreen. It will tan (even slightly) and will never untan. We got these directions from the plastic surgeons who put my daughters face back together after our car accident. They also said to put some vit d lotion on it (we bought it at GNC for like .99)

Save your money, Maderma will not change your scar. As a PP said, make sure you use sunscreen to protect it, you can also try vitamin E. But just a good moisturizer is really all you need.

My son had a mole removed from his face a little over a week ago and I had really been investigating scar removers.

I ended up ordering :

Kelo-cote Advance Formula Scar Gel

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0013UAQ00/ref=oh_details_o00_s01_i00

This has the silicone that is recommended, and got higher reviews on a scar treatment page than Mederma did (I would link to the page, but didn't save it).

From everything I read, Mederma is pretty much worthless.

We have not started the scar gel yet because he is still healing and scabbing, but as soon as his scab falls off and the area is healed, we will begin the treatment.

You have to apply at least three times a day, usually the whole tube. I recommend for people to use the mederma creamy because it has a sunscreen - which you need if you want the scar to fade.
It works, but people don't usually apply it like they are supposed to.

Plastic surgeon told us that Maderma or really any other lotion only work because they encourage you to massage the scar. The thing that really helps is deep tissue massage done frequently. That helps to restore blood flow to the wounded area.

Very interesting information...thanks for all of your replies.

DD was attacked by a dog, in the face, 1-1/2 years ago. Her cosmetic surgeon recommended Scarfade. Can't say for sure if it worked, she has also had surgeries and laser treatment to reduce scars. To glance at her you can't see them though, but if you stare at her they are definitely there (scar color has definitely fade but the texture I guess will stay:(). I had to purchase at a privately owned pharmacy, not "chain" type pharmacy or can also be purchased @ their website.
