Marathon Weekend 2025

Alrighty friends! Here we go!

Welcome to the 2025 version of the Marathon Weekend Dislist! With the help of @Kerry1957 and @The Expert we were once again able to fill @DopeyBadger 's shoes and keep the tradition alive! As always, we are using our best guesses for corral assignments (we based these on the POT thread and the times entered during registration) so I guess we will find out how that went in a week! On a side note, we did have to reduce the file size and therefore the resolution on this to be able to attach it on the boards. If you need a sharper resolution please send me a message and I can email you the larger file.

Super excited to see familiar faces and meet new friends on this trip!
Thank you to @Herding_Cats @The Expert @Kerry1957 for the awesome work on this! I love all the detailed info! 😁 Y’all rock!

Thank you for all the hard work @Herding_Cats @The Expert @Kerry1957 !

@FFigawi will tell us when the hay is in the barn. He is the only one authorized to do so. I trust him on these matters.
Awww, thank you :)

With one week to go before the start of the races, it’s a good time to dust off the annual reminder that the hay is in the barn. As always, thanks go to Charles for first writing this many years ago. :)

The Hay is in the Barn
I used to hear this weekly back in my high school days (and yes there were high schools back then). Coach would walk in Thursday after practice and tell us that the Hay was in the barn boys, enjoy the fruit of our labors. If you think about it, he was correct. We have all spent the training season growing, harvesting, baling and stacking our hay for future use. There is not much more that any of us can do from now through race day. Seriously, a marathon is not an event that you can cram for. I know there are a few who can simply head out and run one, but most of us need to spend the next couple weeks allowing the body to absorb the training from the last few months. Many do not understand that the work (running, lifting, etc) is not where strength and improvements come from; rather, its the recovery periods just after the work where they occur. Its happens as a result of the muscle repairs those tiny little micro tears that occur with all workouts.

Its taper time... Yes we do need to be out and running. Taper is seriously misunderstood by many runners. It is not a time of kicking back and not doing anything. Taper is a reduction of training volume. Volume = intensity x time. In many camps it is thought that intensity should remain high through taper. I am in that camp, at least for most runners. Distances, ie time, are reduced dramatically while the mid week intensities remain just as high as previous work.

The exception to the above... If you are injured or ill, I would just recover. Do not run or otherwise aggravate your injury. Give the joint time to heal up. If ill, its still ok to run, but keep it light. The general rule of thumb is that if your cold or illness is above the neck, head out for your run; if in the chest or below the neck stay in.

NERVOUS?
It is normal. Remember how nervous you were the first time you entered a race. These are the same nerves. If this is your first event, it is very normal to have a set of nerves during this period. Tapering tends to bring the nerves out as you are not working out near as long as you were just two weeks ago. Trust me, even the most seasoned runners have similar nerves. Maybe we just hide them better, or understand them better. But watch as you are in the corral on race morning. Folks are burning off nervous energy in various ways. Make a pledge to use your nerves to help get you to and through the race. Once the gun goes off and you just hit the point where you are sweating, your case of nerves will soon disappear.

Have fun, enjoy your race(s), and cross that finish line with a smile on your face!

Nervous? Yes. Very much yes. 😝
You be a’ight, as a friend of mine says.

There is a TV commercial that kept playing during the football games today where it talks about the second Saturday in January is also known as quitters day (presumably related to New Year’s resolutions); my thought was “not for me and my friends, that is the day we go out and make good the training we’ve done for the last year”.

Our second Saturday (weekend) in January is Finishers Day, not quitter’s day!

That is all.

Huh. I never realized you guys actually meet earlier than I was thinking on race morning. I might actually stop by and say hi then after I get checked in at the wheels area. Chute doesn't open to load for us until 4/4:15 usually so we usually just sit around talking.

Just two side notes. I had said Eda in the og post and I did mean Eda not Edna. IDK if y'all thought I made a typo. Or if it was a mistake on y'alls end. They are two different characters from two different franchises. (Owl House vs Incredibles)

I'm only mention this because there's a difference between what the two wear. Particularly one is bright red, the other isn't.

I'll post in here but I've not heard a peep from the person I ordered the dress from and I'm getting a bit concerned. Probably will hit them for an update today. But if for some reason I don't have the dress by half day I will be swapping out for a Camp Jupiter shirt

Admittedly its probably still easiest to spot me by the bright pink handycle before my outfits.

(one convenient thing about the cold is I can get away with wearing cotton on top of my layers.)

Also the fact were hitting the half way now over at TTC is wild to my brain.

Along with the altered start time and just having Main Street later on. Like I've know about this for months and my brain still struggles to wrap its head around it somehow...

Thank you @Herding_Cats @Kerry1957 and @The Expert for putting in the time and work to make this happen again (and of course @DopeyBadger for the orginal work)! Another example of what makes this group so great! Like the release of the event guide, I love seeing this come out as it helps build my excitement for next week.

when i was in high school and track season rolled around in spring, those of us who had been running all fall and winter were ready. those guys always needed a few weeks to "lose their football fat" and catch up.

It's super informal and people just kind of drop in and out of the area we meet at. I hope you stop by at least one morning and say Hi though!

I'm guessing it was autocorrect.

Went out for a quick 5 mile run this morning. It was around 44 degrees with some sun. About two miles in I was starting to get really hot. Making me think twice about the tights for the marathon.
Was this an easy 5 mile run or were you pushing your paces at marathon race pace?

Yep, autocorrect and I didn't even think twice about it as I know Edna but not Eda. Sorry about that! But the costume is really just to give folks something to look for at the meetup or on the course, and as you said, your awesome wheels will be far more recognizable! That said, I'll update the file for posterity and any further updates we may need to put out.

It hit me this morning that we’re only 1 week away from the 5k and I’m nowhere near ready from a packing perspective! Not sure how I’m going to fit all the layers in my luggage! 😳
Packing was crazy. Knowing that I am leaving first thing this Saturday morning and that I would be coaching these next two evenings, I did all my packing last night. My sitting room looks like a disaster area. But two suitcases and two carry ons later, I am pretty much all packed and ready to go with both cold and not so cold weather gear.

Someone posted this tip when I first "joined" the rD section, take your race day shoes and gear in your carry on. If your luggage is lost, at least you can hit up a local store for some park clothes, but it's harder to go replace your running gear.

I have a question that hopefully @DopeyBadger or others who are more experienced with the cold and tapers could help with. My plan was to do all of my runs at an easy pace leading up to Dopey next week. However, we are getting a taste of the cold front with a predicted low of 48 degrees for Saturday morning. I'm trying to figure out what to wear for the HM as the current prediction is 43 degrees and I was planning on running at my (Hanson's) long run pace until Magic Kingdom and then slowing down to my easy pace for the remainder. HERE IS THE QUESTION: is it stupid to run a portion of my Saturday run at long run pace to see if I am too hot wearing tights and a long sleeve shirt under my costume short sleeve shirt? I want to know if I will get overheated running at that pace, but I don't want to do something stupid and run too fast during the taper. Additionally, would it be dangerous to run at MP to see if I get overheated in the same outfit?
