I am going to make strawberry shortcake tonight, but haven't decided what to make for the actual shortcake part yet. I love to use angel food cake instead, but dh doesn't like it, he loves pound cake, but no good recipe. so I guess I'm looking for either a pound cake recipe or a true shortcake one. either would be great! anyone have one that they love?

The recipe on the bisquick box is good but I don't use bisquick anymore because of the Hydrogenated oils. Trader Joe's has a good version I use.

Also, biscuits make the great shortcake. Even good frozen or canned ones. Again, I use Trader Joe's.

Yumm!

If I want to keep it simple, I make a yellow cake mix from Pillsbury or Betty Crocker in two round pans. Then I make real whipped cream and layer the whole thing with whipped cream and strawberries in the middle. "Frost" it with the rest of the whipped cream on the top and sides and cover with fresh berries. YUMMMY!!!!

This was always our b'day cake growing up!

If I am rushed for time, the closest thing I can find to making real shortcake, is pillsbury buttermilk bisquits. I sprinkle sugar on top before I bake them. It always gets rave reviews from guests.

thanks!!!! I appreciate the ideas. I would love a recipe that I could make w/o having to run to the store for biscuits/bisquick and such if anyone has one. anyone???

When I make it, I always used the Sara Lee pound cake that you find in the frozen section. I just thaw it out, throw on the strawberries and then the cool whip !!! I'm not one for that stuff in a can and I've never had "real whip cream" although I'm sure it's good.

Dang, Bisquick has hydrogenated oil!!!??? Dang!

I use the drop biscuit recipe from Bisquick(yeah, I know it's not healthy!) and then pour the strawberries and juice all over them. I make my own whipped cream to top it. DH,who has never liked strawberries, LOVES when I make it!

My favorite is the bisquick too. Can't stand the way most people around here make it - buy angel food cake and add the strawberries and cream.

For a recent party though I tried this recipe to rave reviews. I wanted something I could do ahead of time. Certainly not healthy either but it was very good. I'm afraid it may require a trip to the store unless you happen to have an angel food cake mix in the pantry....

We like the recipe on the bisquick box, we bake them so that they are soft when they come out. Second favorite is angel food cake.

Ok, I went to the Bisquick website to be fair (in case they have changed their recipe). And they have a new Heart Smart Pancake mix with no HGO. Not sure if it has the same recipes on the box.

But I do love the taste of Bisquick, so I may have to try this out.

The regular still has it though.

thanks all! I ended up with the recipe in my better homes and garden cookbook. it looks good to me. will do a poundcake next time! dh loooooves the sara lee ones, so maybe I'll grab one for the freezer for next time. :)

Glad to see I am not the only one who doesn't like the usual shortcake with my strawberries. I use regular van cupcakes with cool whip but will have to try with pound cake or angel food. Thanks!

Sometimes I will just make yellow cup cakes. Real whip cream is the best.
