I like for my family to eat as healthy as possible. DS loves toaster waffles which is fine, but the ones that I prefer him to eat are so expensive! I know that making your own freezer waffles is possible and I know it must be pretty easy, but I have never done it. Does anyone have any tips or tricks to share? I have a basic square waffle iron. Do I need anything else? Also if you have any good recipes please share them too.

Thanks! :hippie:

I just did it last night. I made a batch of waffles (I added some syrup in the batter), just pick which one you want , make them, and freeze. Then when you want to eat put them in the microwave for about 10 sec then toast them

I don't know why I didn't think of this! What a GREAT idea! This will save a lot of $$ and time. I am sure that they will even taste better than store bought! Thanks!

whenever we make waffles, there are always leftovers. We do this also. One thing we've learned is to set them directly into the freezer to "pre-freeze" then put them into ziploc baggies. If you make them and put them into a baggie to freeze, they sometimes stick together and get frost from the moisture.

I will have to try the syrup in the batter, our recipe has sugar. I guess I could substitute that in place of it.

edit:

1 3/4 c flour
2 t baking powder
1/2t salt
1 T sugar
Sift all ingredients together.

3 egg yolks
2-7 T melted margarine
1 1/2c milk
Beat ingredients and blend with dry ingredients.

Take the egg whites and beat until stiff but not dry. Fold whites into batter.

These are crisp, light waffles.

Try this:

2 Cups of Bisquick
1 Egg
1/2 Cup Oil
1 1/3 Cup of Club Soda

Makes the best waffles!

The club soda makes all the difference in the world!

Just so you know....you can do this with pancakes too! I cook and freeze these types of things frequently. My suggestions are to make a big batch. Let the cool completely, otherwise when you thaw them they get soggy. Then put them on a cookie sheet in the freezer. Leave until frozen all the way. This prevents them from sticking together. Then you can put them in baggies. I vacuum seal mine but they have to be frozen solid before you vacuum seal them or the squish up and never resume their former shape. Then when you wan to eat them, just pop in the toaster or microwave for a few seconds! DS loves when I do this. I really need to make some more.

Bisquick:
3 1/4 cups unsifted all purpose flour
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup nonfat dry milk powder
1/2 cup cornstarch
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons salt

mix together. store in airtight container. Use in recipes in place of bisquick.

Waffles
2 cups bisquick mix
1 1/3 cups milk
1 egg
2 tbl vegetable oil
dash of vanilla

mix together. cook according to your waffle irons instructions.

If your son likes pop tarts, I have a recipe for homemade ones that are yummy. I use homemade jam that I made with fresh fruit so it is healthier. DS loves them! Just let me know.

I do pancakes all the time and you'd never know they weren't fresh! I defrost in the nuke box for 1 minute and then finish in the toaster oven. If you do it all the way in the microwave, they get rubbery. So to make it go faster I just start them in the microwave, just until they are cold rather than frozen solid, then put them in the toaster oven for a few minutes, usually while my sausage is cooking on the stove.

I use Alton Brown's (food network) receipe for 100% from scratch buttermilk pancakes. It's really easy, not much more involved than using Bisquick, and I think they taste much better.

Okay, not the OP but you've intrigued me! I would love your recipe for poptarts, please.

Wonderful! Ask and you shall receive huh?! :goodvibes I will have to add the supplies to my grocery list. Thanks for the tips.

Thank You! :thumbsup2

I make Mickey waffles all the time and make extra to throw in the freezer. My tip- put a piece of wax paper between each one then you don't have to worry about them sticking together.

My Super Baby Food Book has a Pop Tart recipe in it, but I have never tried to make them. Here it is:

2 beaten eggs
1/4 c olive oil
2 T melted butter
1/4 c + 2 T honey
2 c flour
2 t baking powder

Combine for dough. Chill for 1 hour. Roll dough into 6 8 x 12 rectangles. (These will be folded in half to make 8 x 6 pastries.) Spread 1 T of filling on on half of the rectangle. Fold in half and seal the edges with a fork or crimping wheel. Bake in preheated 350 oven for 20 minutes. Let cool. Can be topped with frosting.

Frosting:
2 T honey or powdered sugar
1/4 t vanilla
1 T milk
Mix above ingredients and drizzle over pastries.

Thanks for posting your recipe for pop tarts. That is almost the same as mine. Really it is just a pie dough. So if you have one you already really like. just use that. Then put some jam in the middle, seal and bake. I learned how to make jam here: http://www.pickyourown.org/jam.htm Following those instructions, for the first time, it took me about 45 minutes to make jam. I used frozen berry mix I had in the freezer. Total cost for 7 pint size jars was around $12-$15. BUT I had to buy everything. I didn't have jars, lids, or the canning kit thing. Now though it costs next to nothing to make jam.

We tried Alton Brown's buttermilk waffles but DS didn't like them. So we changed the recipe that we use. We do love AB though.

Edited to add:
to cut out the pop tarts...I use a storage container from my cupboard. This way they are all a consistent size! And I didn't have to buy anything to do.

Great thread everyone, thanks so much! I love tips for lower cost and healthier option foods great for kids :)

I make Texas Toast french toast in big batches-at least 1 loaf at a time. I cool it on cookie sheets, then put in freezer. I cook it in a regular toaster. It tastes just like it came out of the pan. Yummy!

Would this be on the Food Network website or could you share please?
