Has anyone used this to color their hair? I want to try coloring my hair myself and this seemed like a natural option. I am terrified to do it. Has anyone had luck with this brand?

I have used it many times and really like it a lot. Much healthier for your hair than drugstore boxed options. I've been very satisfied.

I've used it but know that it doesn't last as long as other salon hair colors. I find that it fades within 2 weeks and doesn't cover gray as long but it is healthier for your hair so they say.

I thought it was permanent? Is it semi permanent?

I used it for a few months. The color always seemed too dark to me and when I got in touch with them they had some work arounds, but it was still darker than what I wanted. When I wanted to go a shade lighter they said it wouldn’t work for me because of my gray areas and the fact that they don’t use bleach (which is why it is healthier). I really just wanted to get back to the dark blonde color I used to have before the gray hair and before I used their product.
I do think if you are looking to go a little darker or cover gray with a dark color you will be fine.

They say it's permanent but it does not last nearly as long as other salon hair color. I have their roots membership and I'm about to cancel cuz I'm having to go in every two weeks because it just isn't lasting.

there is no bleach in permanent hair color. Color won't lift color so to go lighter it would not have worked on previous colored hair ( shaft & ends)

I've used the dye kit and color gloss a few times during covid shutdowns of my salon. I liked it for an at-home option. I did end up using a lighter shade than I thought I needed to get a good match. I had pretty good coverage for about 4-5 weeks (I only have a few spots of gray). I would use the gloss to brighten the color up between dye touchups.

I had a difficult time finding the shade I wanted (light golden brown) a few years ago. They seemed to only offer medium brown and darker (level 5) or blonde (level 8). Their work around was to mix two different dyes in one developer bottle to get the shade I wanted. It worked but then I had to order two kits at a time to get both tubes of color.

OP-What are you trying to achieve with hair color? Lighter, darker, just something different, gray coverage, save money?

just a touch darker brown, gray coverage and save money LOL. The salon prices are just so high. I also want a more natural option.

I switched from the salon to madison reed and no issues. I keep pushing back my delivery dates because I don't need it as often as they usually ship (I combine two colors so order two boxes at a time and have enough for two dye jobs). When I first started I sent them in several pictures of my hair so I could get an idea on if they could match (my color was red and my hairstylist did several shades on me), they did a great job IMO of getting a match with the two (vesuvius red and savanna scarlet, .6oz of one and .4 of the other). I haven't noticed any fading at all, the red has so far stayed very vibrant and I've only needed to apply to my grown-out roots.

Overtone is another good natural option. I stopped coloring my hair 3 years ago and have been using their various Gray formulas to achieve gray coverage and highlights. It doesn't cover my gray completely but it turns the gray into a glossy highlight. It is also like a deep conditioner and my hair is so much healthier. I was able to do a body perm to give my hair more body which I could never do when I used to color my hair (salon every 10 weeks and at home root touch up every 2-3)

I started using Madison Reed when Ulta had it 50% off and I really like it. For me, the color seems to last longer than what you buy in the grocery store. I am very satisfied!

I bought 2 and used one. I hated it. It was not better then the Natural Instincts semi permanent that I used to use and loved until they changed the formula. It left my hair in horrible condition too. I have tried a variety of brands and I like Garnier Olia the best. But frankly none of them last more than 2 wks without a touch up.

I have used Overtone too. I am glad you reminded me maybe I will use the conditioner again to see if my color lasts longer. If you have dark hair it is really only a conditioner and does not cover gray.
