Is Cruising in October a BAD idea??

I booked our 25th Wedding Anniversary on the 7 day Eastern in October 2012.

Many people I have spoken with think I am CRAZY even thinking of going on a cruise during hurricane season and recommended I celebrate my Anniversary like in April or May avoiding the hurricane season all together.

I was all excited, and now I'm wondering if they are right. The last time we sailed was in April 2005 and our first night we were all sick due to the motion of the ocean (there was a rogue wave earlier that week out there and the water was still very choppy)

Any seasoned Hurricane season cruisers out there that can help me ease my fears?

Our first 4 cruises were in October. Weather was beautiful and never a problem with hurricanes. The captain is well trained to avoid them. Also, the first and last nights are always the roughest because the ship crosses some "stream" that is rough.

IMO you will be fine :hippie:

I went on the 7 day in October 2009 with no problems. The weather was beautiful and the seas were calm the entire trip.

Our anniversary is in September & we've sailed then & it was wonderful. I wouldn't hesitate to sail during hurricane season.

Actually, September and October are great times to cruise. The water is warm. The air is warm, but not offensively hot and humid (like in summer). And if a pesky storm appears, you'll have a magical mystery cruise to somewhere you didn't anticipate. If you can be a "go with the flow" sort of person, it's great. If you have to know where you will be every minute, perhaps this isn't the time for you.

Thanks everyone who replied . . .

I'm really a go with the flow kind of person, heck they can take me to Bermuda for all I care . . .I honestly wanted to book the Western to go to Mexico, but those sail dates don't fall exactly on our Anniversary and I wanted to celebrate our real anniversary on the cruise instead of a week earlier and/or later, so therefore, the Eastern it was :goodvibes

The best thing about being on a cruise is that the captain can make adjustments when he knows bad weather is coming (I'm talking hurricanes not just a simple storm). You are stuck with what's coming if you are on land!

We sailed last September for our Honeymoon. We were told the same advice, but we didn't listen. The waters were a little choppy the first night, but we got used to it quickly. We are sailing at the end of September this year for our 1 year wedding anniversary. I hope you have a magical time!! :wizard:

Hi all! We were on the Disney cruise in October 2007 when a hurricane came up. The waters did get choppy and I had to put a towel in front of my veranda door as a small amount of water was coming in.

BUT, it turned out to be a great cruise. Although we couldn't dock at CC because the water was too choppy, the captain took us to Nassau instead (which was very sunny and beautiful). The best thing was that just after we arrived, the other Disney cruise ship came up and docked right beside us as their regularly scheduled island for that day!! We got amazing pictures of the two ships together as they are never at the same location at the same time.

Go book and have a great time!!!!!

We have cruised 4 times in October. We have had some cancelled excursions, and some changed ports, but have loved every bit of it!!!

October is a great time to go! warm days, cool nights, occasionally choppy but not bad and the ships aren't packed full

We're taking our 5th Oct. cruise this year so my answer to your question would be NO - it's not a bad idea! It's a great time to sail. Congrats and have fun!!:thumbsup2

I think it is the best time to cruise. It is right at the end of hurricane season and we have never (knock on wood) had any issues.

Atlantic hurricane season lasts half of the year.... June 1 to November 30. In my experience (from living on the east coast of Florida for several years), bad weather can come at any time...

We had some serious storms come before and after "official" hurricane season, too. You just never know!

If you absolutely HAVE to go to CC or Nassau, then it might be dicey, if you don't care if you miss either of the two ports, then go ahead and book.

As the other posters have said, the Captains are good at avoiding weather, and sometimes to avoid it, they might have to skip port(s).

In 2004 we were on the Disney Magic during Hurricane Frances. Our captain navigated us around it, and in order to do so, we had to spend an extra three days at sea. It was one of the best cruises ever... our 7-night turned into a 10-night! :thumbsup2

The captain will keep you safe and away from major storms. Even though Hurricane Frances was so bad that it kept us from returning to Port Canaveral for three whole days, I only felt a lot of movement on one day. And after a Dramamine or two, I was perfectly fine! Plenty of people cruise during hurricane season... I wouldn't worry about it! :)

See! Cruising during hurricane season can be a good thing! I wish I'd get that lucky..."Sorry boss, I wanted to come back, but the captain refised to go back to port..." :cool1:

Hurricane season will be dying down in Oct. so go and have a wonderful cruise.

We've cruised in Oct. before and will sail again this Oct. Beautiful time of the year.

Best wishes.

Our DD and her DH sailed around a hurricane last fall. We tracked the ship's progress on the 'Net and checked the weather reports. I think we were more concerned than they were. They didn't have to miss any ports, but they had plenty of company in Jamaica from ships that had to divert. They had a wonderful cruise.
