I recently watched the movie and am very interested to find out more about the true story it was very loosely based on. I have Googled and found more dead links than info. What I have learned is that it was a Japanese expedition in 1957 or 1958 and it was either 9 or 15 dogs left behind with only 2 surviving.
I did find a picture of the survivors, Taro & Jiro.
Here are the most informative links I have found to date:
Movie Habit: Review of Antartica
Muse Ink: "Freying" at "Eight Below"
There was a Japanese movie made in 1983 about the incident which has been dubbed into English and titled Antarctica but was apparently a very small release and is difficult to find. Anyone know where else I might be able to find more info on this? A book or website perhaps?
