If I fractured my kneecap, would I be able to walk on it?

Trying to decide if this needs to be checked out by a doctor. Fell on my knee going up the concrete steps. Full weight on that one knee. Bruising and swelling around the bruise almost immediately. I thought at first I'd only injured my dignity, but it hurts to bend that knee. I can put weight on it without pain, though.

Any thoughts? Obviously I don't want to spend money on a doctor unnecessarily. Thanks!

My DD18 has fractured her knee cap twice. Both time she had a lot of pain and was unable to bend the knee. Both times she was able to walk in the leg, but it hurt a lot. Her fractures were what they call "cookie crumble" fracture--cracked on the front, but intact on the opposite side. Therefore, she didn't need any surgery to stabilize it, but she was in a knee brace for several weeks both times.

I could be that you just bruised it badly. If it keeps hurting, though, get it checked out.

Good heavens lady go get it checked out. Call me if you need me to go with you! I'll hold your hand and eat the lollipop they give you when they get done with xrays.;)

Thank you, that's helpful.

YOU"RE NOT THE BOSS OF ME, MISSY! ;)

I hurt my knee a few weeks ago (a table fell on it). it was bruised and filled with fluid for about a week before I was able to get to the doctor. I was able to walk on it, but bending it was painful. They told me my knee cap was shifted out of place. The gave me a brace to wear so it will gradually be pushed back.

Hopefully your knee will be ok!

Oh, ouch. That sounds awful. I hope you are doing better now.

Just wanted to say hope your knee isn't seriously injured.

Thank you so much. I appreciate it.

The monster-sized goose egg that I got right after it happened is gone, so I'm left with a large bruise with raised area where my knee hit. Still hurts to bend - walking down the stairs is truly awful - but is bearable otherwise. I'll wait for a day or so, see how it goes.

I thought of the Dis right after I fell this morning. It's winter, so I slack in my shaving habits. Would not have been a good day for anyone to be looking at my leg.

I hope your knee is improving. Just wanted to add I completely agree with you! Missed a stair and fell, spraining my foot. Instant goose egg and bruising, plus I heard cracks, so I knew I needed to go get xrays. It was my right foot so I couldn't drive. While I was waiting for my husband to come get me, I hopped upstairs to shave one leg :rolleyes1 Figured if they needed to cast me or whatever, might be better! (How embarassing!)

uhmm if this was a horse....nevermind

I did the same thing a few years ago, only instead of concrete steps it was an escalator. Had two gashes in my knee and couldn't bend it, but was able to walk on it (slowly and with some pain). Went to the ER because I needed stitches and after an x-ray they told me I had chipped off a piece on the edge. Wore a brace for a few weeks and slowly improved over time.

I would get it checked out, just in case.

Yes but it would be very painful. DH fractured his patella and a partially torn patella tendon and a torn meniscus and he continued to walk and even run on it for over a week before he finally went to the doctor.

This thread brings back memories of my having "water on the knee" when I was younger. Sounds funny now, I don't even know if that's a real diagnosis!

Apparently there was no fracture but it was swollen. :confused3 Anyway, I had trouble walking for a long time, I couldn't quite straighten my knee out all the way while I was in motion. Eventually it went away and hasn't bothered me since. (Knock on wood.)

Good luck!

I know this is a very old thread, but it came up when I searched. I'm wondering how the op's knee is and anyone else who injured theirs.
A week ago last Sunday (almost 2 weeks ago), I tripped up a curb and landed hard on my right knee on cement. My DH and DS thought I just badly bruised it, so I iced and heated and tried to use it, though I took stairs one at a time up and down. I used a crutch for a bit and then wore compression. I finally went to an orthopedist 2 days ago and it showed a fractured kneecap. I sure was lucky that I didn't break it with all of my movement! I'm now wearing a full leg knee brace with minimal movement for 3 weeks until I go back to see how it's doing.

I usually walk lots of miles a day. I think my doctor told me to do nothing for 3 weeks, but I also think he knew I was going to drive using my bad leg (why do I go to the doctor without a pal to listen with me???). Yesterday I drove myself 3 miles to my job where I sit a lot with minimal walking to the copier. But I did a slow walk around the block last night to get some exercise. Now I'm scared if I shouldn't be doing any of this. I'll call the doctor's office soon this morning, but I would love to hear from actual people who have dealt with this. I don't know if I should go to work today - Friday! - or work from home and take it easy.

DW broke hers into 5 pieces. She couldn’t stand at all. YMMV.

Geez I could start a thread too. “ can i walk on a broken ankle”

A Zombie thread.

6 out of 10 zombies said they'll be glad to save you some money and check out your knee for you.
3 out of 10 zombies said they'll make a house call and check out your entire family's knees.
1 zombie drooled. So we ended the survey and I shot the zombie furthest from us with my cross bow and while the rest of the zombies ate him, we departed... With haste.

The answer is yes, yes - you can.
Been there done that - walked on the broken ankle for 6 weeks until I finally went to the Dr.
I guess you could say that I am a little stubborn...
