How to Decorate A More 'Mature' Disney Bedroom?

Hi! Not sure where to post this, so I figured I'd try here. Anywho, my family's moving into a new house, hopefully sometime in late October. Since I've gotten more and more Disney obsessed over the past year, my room is going to be 'Disney'-themed. We got this bed set off the Disney website:

I have an antique furniture set already, consisting of a bed set with headboard, a dresser, and a dressing table. The above bedding will go on my current bed set. I love a cute, colourful room. For my last room, which was painted nine years ago, I was really into Van Gogh. My dad painted his own version of Starry Night on my cieling(very impressive, I think). Here are some pictures of my old room and bedroom furniture:

So, I obviously don't mind bright colours. :) And my favorite colour is blue. I loved my bedroom. I also loved having something on my cieling to look at while thinking at night. Although, looking back, I think it's too crowded; too many figurines and things. But, my new room will be double the size, so I'll be able to spread out my things more.

The reason I'm posting this is to ask for opinions on what to do in a more mature Disney room. I don't even know if mature is the right word; I'm obviously not TOO mature since I want to theme my new bedroom Disney, and I'm seventeen. ;) But I just mean I don't want Disney princesses and stuff like that. I'd love to hear any of your ideas! I've already been trying to think of things. I'm going to have the classic Mickey bedspread, so maybe I could get some more classic Mickey things to go in my room. And, maybe I could paint my cieling a deep blue, with some of those glowy stick-on stars. My mom and I were discussing where to put a Tinkerbell on the cieling. If we could paint one on, or somehow wire it that we could put up a little figure that would 'fly' across the top of my cieling. Yeah, we're thinking big... so, if anyone has any ideas for wall colours or fun Disney ideas, please share!

Our bedroom has the furniture from the poly prior to their room reno. We have their bedspread, headboard and a few other pieces. It's Disney without having Mickey's all over.

That is a gorgeous bedding set! Wow, I bet your new room will be stunning.

One way to bring Disney in and pick up the black/white color scheme of your bedding would be to frame some of your favorite pics of the parks, films, or characters in black frames with white mattes. That would add a "mature" element to the walls, I think.

Behr has a Disney paint line (home of the lime green mickey heads), I think it would look sharp to paint the wall your headboard goes against a clean, Mickey red...

Please post pics when you are done!

Thanks for the two replies already, guys! Great ideas. I especially love the idea of the black and white disney pictures, and the accent wall.

I will definitely post pictures when it's finished! :wizard:

Fiber optic ceiling. It simulates the stars with fiber optics.
I love the bed set. Your furniture is also very pretty. I love antiques.:cutie:

I actually meant just those stick-on glowy stars, although I just looked up fiber optic cielings, and they look amazing ! I'm looking into it, now. Thanks for the idea! :goodvibes

No tips. I just wanted to say I really like that bedding set, but I LOVE your dressing table! That should be something that you cherish forever.

Oh your furniture is beautiful!

That bedding to me is screaming for a hot color in on the walls- like a HOT PINK. Or maybe Turquoise although looking on this site makes me even think a pale blue would work

Oh and tinkerbelle!! LOVE IT! I would hang a Tink ornament maybe? So it's not too big. And I love the fiber optic lights.

My 15 year old son just bought a canvas from the Art of Disney store in DTD of Tomorrowland. He loves the old posters. Really they have some great stuff. I have been trying to find them online(no luck) I'm going to try at the World of Disney in NYC.

Have fun in your new room!

I agree with some others, I would go with a BOLD color for the walls, something you absolutely LOVE! You could do black and white disney pics on the walls, but mat the pics with the awesome wall color or something that would complement it.

You could find a famous quote by Walt Disney or a line from a Disney movie that you find meaningful (i.e. "It all started with a mouse...") and stencil it onto one of your walls. You can get stencils made to order at a website called thesimplestencil.com . I used them recently when we did my DD5's room in a Disney Princess theme. On one of her walls we put "Once upon a time there was a beautiful princess...". Check out their website. I highly recommend them!

I love the idea of having one wall painted, the more I think about it. And, great suggestion about the pictures!

That is a WONDERFUL idea. We had a stencil in our old house, and it looked just beautiful up on the wall, and I always loved walking past it. I especially like some of his quotes about "Adults are just kids grown up". I'm going to college next year and really facing adulthood, but still wanting to be a kid. I'd love to have one of those quotes up on my wall. Thanks for the link!

What about---
'All you need is Faith, Trust, and a little bit of Pixie Dust'

Thanks! I want to put them in our kid's rooms. I love them! They aren't hard to install. You just have to run the electric. They use them in places like the RainForest etc. If you install them you can them paint Peter Pan and Wendy flying across the moon on the ceiling.
The glowy stars lose their glow and aren't as nice. You could use glow in the dark paint and paint the stars on the ceiling though.

I'm not into disney decor, its fine its just not my taste. That said, I think if you "have" to go Disney decor, the bedding set you have selected is great. I think it deserves to be the centerpiece of a clean, simple and tasteful room. Here's what I'd do:

Brick red accent wall behind your headbord. Other three walls would be a warm taupe. Black and white pictures of Disney -related scenes, like maybe a black and white of Tink, or of the castle, the mouse, maybe vintage movie posters. Framed with black frames. To keep it simple, I'd remove all the tchokies and just narrow it down to a few things on a black wall display shelf.

I wouldn't do any special painting on the ceiling, though the fiberoptic lights sound cool.

On the wall opposite your bed, you could do several quotes in a dark taupe, to be a tone-on-tone contrast with the wall color, and use varying fonts for the different quotes. There are companies online that will make wall decales with the quotes that look pretty sharp.

I would also make a pincushion board covered in vintage Mickey fabric where you can pin up photographs and notes.

OK, so if none of that sounds good to you, the other option would be to go for hot pink walls and use lots of zebra print accents as well.

Good luck and have fun! :cheer2:

I've been googling Disney quotes now, and that's one of the best! Thanks for sharing. I'd completely forgotten that classic. I think that one would look great on my wall, especially if I end up doing the fiber optic cieling with Tinkerbell. :lovestruc

Thanks! Those ideas are definitely for a more 'mature' Disney room. :) I love the idea of different quotes in different fonts.

Just wanted to say thanks again to everyone, and that I added a few more pictures of my old bedroom to the original post. :) I'm currently trying to find a good lamp. I saw a classic Mickey style lamp on eBay a few weeks ago. I'm on the hunt...

That all sounds AWESOME!
I'd love to see some pics of how you have your home decorated. Although I love Disney decor (have some throughout my house) I bet your home is HGTV quality...I strive for that :goodvibes
