How much Chipped Ham per person??

Where are my fellow Pittsburghers???? :cheer2:

How much Chipped Ham do you figure per person for Ham BBQs? Right now I'm looking at around 30 people.
 
I have a recipe for this on my blog. I used 2 pounds of ham when I made them and in the post I said it fed 6 of us plus we had leftovers for several days. I'm guessing that 2 lbs. made enough for 12-15 servings.

I bet 4 lbs. would be enough.
 
OOOOOO - I miss Isaly's chipped ham. (Although I don't really like it BBQ - just plain on a sandwich). :goodvibes
 
5 lbs of ground beef will make 30+ sloppy joes, if that means anything. I would think about 1/8 lb of ham per person, about 4 lbs?

We had your 50's prime time meat loaf for dinner tonight, my daughter had thirds! Huge hit!

And I almost made the hot chocolate ice cream tonight, but our freezer wasn't in the freezer! Darn!

I also shared your pink lemonade cookie recipe on FB and one of my friends already made them, she said:
"I made them this morning. They are wicked sweet and crazy sour but somehow amidst all this this craziness.. everyone seemed to like them! I would defin. make again!"
 
I'd get 4-5 pounds of chipped ham.

I'll be making chipped ham bar-b-ques for our tailgate party at work this Friday.
 
I grew up about an hour away from Pittsburgh, and lived in Plum Boro for 1 1/2 years, just so you know. So I know chipped ham, and I think you should be okay with 4 pounds.

i miss my albert's low salt chipped ham on mancini's italian bread.

i would say 5 pounds to be safe :)
 
ALso think about who you are feeding. If they are big eaters. It might not hurt to have 6 lbs.... If there are children than they wont eat as much etc...

Then have leftovers if needed :-)
 
BBQ chipped ham actually freezes pretty well. I'd probably err on the side of caution and make extra. You can always freeze the leftovers for another time, like when the Pens are in the Stanley Cup playoffs. (Being optimistic here! :thumbsup2)

@TiffanyK, your blog recipe looks good! I've never tried making it with grape jelly, brown sugar, etc but it sounds like it would be a good blend with the ketchup and cut down the acidity. I haven't made BBQ chipped ham in a long time, now I have a craving for it. :)

I make this a lot for scrapbooking events so I would go with 5-6 lbs because the chipped ham does cook down a lot.

Chipped ham is ham that is sliced so thin it falls apart. Really yummy stuff. Any deli can do it for you, although they may have never heard of chipped ham either, depending on where in the country you are.

I grew up in IN and we had chipped ham for cold sandwiches, but I'd never heard of the bbq sandwiches until someone shared the recipe with me.

The other thing to take into consideration when thinking about how much meat to buy, is how much other food will there be. Is this the only main dish, with chips and other sides? Or is this going to be served with wings, meatballs & sausages, etc.?

There will be other food. And there are some kids too. But the guest list is still growing. :laughing: At least I have something to go on now.

I've been asked to take Chipped Ham to friends in other parts of the country when we visit!
 
Okay, around here there is this thing that is a whole bunch of leftover ham pieces/parts that is pressed and formed into a square like a loaf of bread and then deli sliced for sandwiches, even Oscar Mayer has one. It's cheap and gross and beyond edible, at least I think it is. It is refered to as chipped or choped ham loaf. Is this what you're talking about?

Or is it a regular deli ham that is shaved thin so that the 'slices' don't stay whole.

Made with the second this sounds yummy, made with the first um not so much.

When I buy it, I get regular deli ham shaved super thin. I know the ham loaf stuff you're talking about, but that's not what I use for chipped ham.
