My dog injured her leg really pretty bad today and there isnt an emergency vet here. I am going to take her to the vet in the morning but does anyone know the dosage of aspirin I could give her tonight to aleviated the pain. She injured the other leg last year and it cost $1500 for the crucia(sp?) repair so I am praying it isnt that on the other leg!

You can give your dog 1 regular asprin. Make sure its the coated kind and not a baby one.

I usually give my standard dachshund (35 lbs) one low dose aspirin. Like the previous poster stated make sure they are buffered.

My dog is 60lbs and was diagnoised with the start of hip dysplasia at 1 year of age. We have been giving him 1 aspirin per day and the doctor actually told us that at his weight, we could give him up to 3 or 4 a day and it wouldn't hurt him. Since he has a "sensitive stomache", we are sticking with 1 for now.

Thanks, I guess I will head to walgreens. I am starting to consider driving the hour and a half to the emergency vets in the next town. Its so hard to tell if they just hurt it a bit to limp a little or its a serious injury. What is a regular strength aspirin? 325 mg or 500mg?

She also has arthritis. She takes 3 glucosamine with msm everyday but no pain medication yet.

Texasthree, Make sure you check the label of the glucosomine because sometimes it already has a pain killer in it. Ran into this with sister-in-laws dog. I have 3 old girls and they get two 81mg tablets twice a day , If the weather is really damp. So I think one reg 325mg aspirin should help the pain. Also check the phone book for an emergency after hours vet you can call , They will sometimes give you recommendations until you can get to a vet. Good Luck Terri

I checked the glucosamine and it doesnt have a pain reliever. I called the regular town vet line to see there hours tomorrow and they had an answering service. A vet called me back and said I could give her 500mg tonight and to bring her in first thing in the morning. We always use the base vet but they arent open on mondays so this will be a new experience. She almost seems to be doing a little better already tonight so hopefully shes not as bad as I suspect. Our yard is starting to have lots of holes from the sod seperating due to the lack of rain and she was running around out there this morning. I have been watering all day and evening and went to the lowes and bought a few bags of dirt to fill them in. I guess this will be a lessen in taking better care of the yard too!

Thanks everyone!

Texasthree How is your dog doing today? I'm glad you were able to reach someone last night...at least you had some piece of mind for the night. Hope all went well. Terri

She is doing a little better today. I took her this morning and they think its a minor injury and will heal on its own. They wanted to give me another pain reliever but they were out of it. They are going to get it from their corpus office in the morning and I will go and pick it up in the afternoon. I gave her the aspirin last night and this morning. He also wanted me to start giving her 3 glucosamine for the next 4 weeks and then go back down to 2 after that. Poor old gal! I was just really really worried she had tore this crucia ligament but thankfully thats not the case!
Thanks for asking Chuchie. I think she'll survive!

My dog is a 55 pound English Springer Spaniel. I give him an aspirin once or twice per day for general achiness and discomfort from old-age arthritis. He is 12.

The vet said no more than two buffered aspirin per day.

Once, when he had acute Lyme's disease and had a 104 temp, she aloowed me to give him a third aspirin in one day in an attempt to break his fever, but she seems to really go by the two per day rule.

Glad to hear your pooch is doing much better. Our dog just had crucia surgery 4 weeks ago. He has been doing great until the other night he started standing like a flamingo again. It really freeked me out. The next morning he was back to normal. Whew. We are still heading to the vet today for a check-up anyway. ;)

Minnie, Our dog had the crucia surgery 1 year ago and shes still limping. The glucosamine seems to help but shes never going to 100% again.
I hope your dog keeps healing well!

My Chow had the same surgery about 6 years ago (she's now 12) and within a month...during the healing process...she ruptured it again. I was told that you really only get one shot at that kind of surgery on one leg so since then she has been on Glucosamine and Metacam. Pretty much a band-aid job but she carries on! These past few weeks she has deteriorated further but then she is getting up there in years now and there really isn't too much more they can do. She seems happy enough and though she sleeps a lot, she enjoys her hobbles (walks)

Good Luck! I hope it isn't anything too serious for your doggie :thumbsup2

Texasthree, I'm very glad she is doing well...I love my old gals and I hate for them to be uncomfortable in any way. Let us know how she progresses. Good Luck. Terri
