How many lbs of grapes do I need?

How many lbs of grapes do I need for 100 kids? They are also having yogurt and cookies.

Grapes are kind of heavy, I would think you need at least 10 lbs for that many kids, probably more (4 packages). I would eyeball it rather than think in lbs. Do you have to serve grapes? I would cut up two watermelons. Less of a choking hazard. Not that you asked :).

Is it a meal or a snack? What ages are these kids?

Sorry, it is a snack, and kids are 2-12. So the little ones will eat less. I was going to cut them in half for the little ones. May get raisins instead. I'm thinking in lbs for budget. I was also thinking 8-10 lbs. Those little grapes packages that come with kids meals at Disney are 1 oz, but the big kids may want more.

100 kids :scared: why do I have the feeling they will be throwing them at each other. :lmao:

You'll need to cut them in 1/4's. 1/2 are still really chokable.

A cup of grapes is about a 1/5 of a lb. If you want to serve a cup each that's 20 lbs, if you want to serve 1/2 cup, then obviously it's 10 lbs.

Do you really want to wash and cut up 10 lbs of grapes?? LOL What about doing mix ins for the yogurt? You could put out bowls of crushed graham crackers, crushed oreos, raisins, trail mix, granola etc. Much less work and it will boost the yougurt and make it a little more filling.

Thank you! I think I will go with 8 lbs, the little kids will eat less.

I have helpers to do the washing and cutting. :-)

This is a "foods of the promised land" themed snack for vacation bible school. Fig cookies for figs (cut into quarters for the ones), Greek yogurt topped with honey for milk an honey, and grapes.

Also the kids come down for snack about 10 at a time and there are 2-3 teachers per class so I am not worried about them throwing them.

If you were throwing a party and kids would be there with their parents, I'd say serve the grapes and let parents determine what their kids should eat. But at VBS where the parents are entrusting you with their children, I'd skip the grapes and the raisins for the under 3's. Some children can eat them very well without choking, but not all children chew and swallow well at early ages. Since any chart you can find with what foods are safe to eat at what ages would say not to feed those foods to 2 year olds (and some of them would eliminate them for 3 and even 4 year olds as well), I'd get something else for the younger classes. Even if you cut them in halves or fourths. Just the skins alone could make them too chokey for some little ones. I have 5 children, and my 4th could not have safely eaten grapes with peels when he was 2. (I didn't let other people be in charge of feeding him, though, since he was unusual.)

It sounds like you're going to be putting the grapes in serving sizes and passing them out. If that's the case, then I think that about 5 pounds would be plenty for all the classes with kids ages 5 and above. If they're serving themselves, I'd get a few extra pounds to be on the safe side.

If you had started with all these details you would have gotten different answers :goodvibes. I was picturing a couple of preschool or kindergarten classes, not a group of VBS kids :). Now I get the grape thing and think it's cool!

Thanks for the suggestion. I may skip the grapes for the 2-3 and maybe 4 yo classes and just put them out for the K-5's. A 4 oz cup of Greek yogurt and 1-2 fig cookies should be plenty for the preschoolers. I am putting the grapes in serving cups.
