How intense is Escape from Gringotts

Still a few months away, but this will be the first time at Universal Studios.

My 6year old daughter was great with all the rides she went on during the last Disney trip (was 5 back then), with the exception of one - guardians of the galaxy cosmic rewind. Slinky Dog, 7 dwarfs, flight of passage, etc... she loved. Just Cosmic Rewind had her overwhelmed.

How's the intensity of Gringotts vs. a slinky dog or cosmic rewind?

Gringotts is way more intense than either. Slinky is a happy light (outdoor) ride. Cosmic rewind is in the dark, but smooth, fun (I may or may not be singing along), and you can usually see where you are going.

Gringotts is darker (both in terms of visibility and also theme) and also very jerky.

Honestly the only HP ride I really enjoy is Hagrids. If she can handle Slinky/Cosmic Rewind she’d probably be ok with Hagrids, though it does go backwards so it is more intense.

oh wow really? I've read that Hagrids is more intense than Gringotts, so that wasnt even on our list.

As for Cosmic Rewind, she'll probably not do that one again for a while (I think it was the speed that probably scared her a bit).

Gringotts is fast and scary
Hagrids is fast(er) and fun

I’d pick H over G any day, but it doesn’t sound like she is ready for either.

In terms of actual ride intensity, Gringotts isn't too bad. The beginning tilts into a suspenseful dark drop, but the literal drop is not very far - only about 10'. It has 3D scenes mixed with brief coaster movement that sometimes simulates falling, but doesn't really have drops per se other than that first one.

Thematically it is darker than Forbidden Journey, as the later Harry Potter movies are darker. Has she watched any of the Harry Potter movies?

You might consider watching a ride through online if you think she is on the cusp.

Interesting…I would have said exactly the opposite. Why do you find Cosmic Rewind the most intense of the 3 rides?
I agree.

Gringott's is the only ride in Disney or Universal where I wear a strap on my glasses. Because it's the only ride where I have repeatedly lost my 3D glasses (and each time feel like I'm using my real glasses).

Interesting - of all the rides, between my friend & I we have only lost 3D glasses once, on Spider-Man of all things. Although he did have 3D glasses from someone else land in his lap on Gringotts.

Either way, I don't necessarily equate "jostley" or "jerky" with intense. Velocicoaster is quite smooth, but it is certainly more intense than Mummy or Rip Ride Rocket.

For me intensity comes down to a combination of speed, jerkiness, darkness, and “fun.”

Cosmic Rewind is medium fast, very smooth, dark but not too dark, and super fun.

Hagrids is faster, pretty smooth, goes backwards, and is super fun.

Gringotts is dark, jerky, deceptively fast at times, and (for me) not that much fun. It’s a hybrid of screens and coaster elements. I didn’t get sick on it but others did. Though honestly I liked it better than forbidden journey.

As far as intensity, Cosmic Rewind > Hagrid’s > Gringott’s.
I know others have questioned this order, but I'd likely come up with the same order. They're all different types of intense. The speed and spinning sensation of CR is such that 2 members of my family won't ride that one anymore, but would do Hagrid's and Gringott's more than once. It really is a matter of what bothers certain people. I usually see people sitting and 'gathering' themselves when we exit CR. I love all 3. I also agree, Slinky Dog isn't even in the conversation!

I think it would really depend on what about Cosmic Rewind gave her difficulty.

If it was the speed, then:
- Gringotts ok
- Hagrid's no

If it was the darkness, then:
- Gringotts no
- Hagrid's - maybe (due to it still being rather intense)

If it was overwhelm due to multiple things going on at once (I remember a lot of lights while spinning with speed and pressure in cosmic)
- Gringotts - probably ok
- Hagrid's - maybe (due to it still being rather intense)

Gringott's has a lot of start/stop that drives you between scenes where you watch story on screens. The ride feel and mechanism is very different from Cosmic rewind, which was continuous and didn't have a let-up in speed or pressure. I think I didn't connect until reading it online that Gringott's is actually a coaster because it doesn't really feel like one to me - it feels more like a mechanism to bring you from one scene to another but with some occassional acceleration to make it more fun.

I think the biggest possible difficulty with Gringott's might be the story-line because of her age. I second a previous poster's suggestion to watch a POV video of the ride before going so you can better make that judgement for her.

I think I give the "intense" label because of the combination of the strong jerky movement and the dark theming. Also, the jerkiness is a more of an issue to the new rider who doesn't know what to expect.

I can't even imagine how many pairs of 3D glasses they find down under that ride every day.

That said, I love it. But a 6 year old might not.

It's interesting to see what everyone considers "intense." I wouldn't personally consider theming if someone asked if an amusement park ride was intense. IE I don't consider Kong intense - you don't even need a lap bar - but it's dark & jostley & thematically scary. I wonder if considering theming towards intensity has more to do with the age of the child OP asked about?

Thanks for the responses all. And yes, I've watched the videos (there's one on youtube that shows the ride with the lights on).

I was a little surprised that people voted Gringotts are more intense than Cosmic Rewind, but then again, I dont really consider the darkness/content to be 'intense'. It's more about the speed and especially the 'drops' that I factor into 'intensity' factor. Everyone's different I guess.

My daughter also did Rise of the Resistance last time with no issues (lots of guns/shooting), and the drop at the end (not sure how it compares to Gringotts though) was a non issue.

Hagrids & Slinky are definitely more intense than Gringotts just as far as actual speed/drops. It's really just that one suspenseful pending drop right at the beginning of Gringotts. Otherwise, there are only simulated drops via the 3D effects. That said, my "non-coaster" Mom was not a Gringotts fan because the virtual drops "felt real."

Apples and cantaloupe comparison.
Gringotts is more a cross between Dinosaur and Mummy to me.
3D dark ride with relatively slow speed but a bit jerky.
My DW will bow out of Mummy and Gringotts before she'd miss Slinky because of the dark and jerkiness.
Hagrids is super intense in a couple of the launches and G forces but a happy ride.
The spiral over the water in Velocicoaster is extremely intense.
Journey is jerky as well but the dark scare factor is pretty high.

I would not vote Gringotts the ride anywhere near as intense at GotG. A lot of people report nausea and a disorientation after Guardians. You are spinning by a lot of images. Gringotts has the car stopping at various scenes, if the content of those scenes is scary doesn't translate to an intense ride in my mind.

I can’t do gforce or rides where my head is jerked around so which rides at Universal should I avoid? I don’t mind darkness, scary or motion sickness
