*HHI Owners and Beach Lovers Group Thread*

Quick question - I know it's hard to get into HHI at the 7-month mark, especially in June.

But can rooms be booked with cash, just through the Disney site earlier than that? If so, does anyone know where I can get idea of what June prices would be? (June 2026 or beyond, not looking to go this June.)
We stayed there many times using cash in the past (see signature--those are all cash stays). In the past few years, it has been almost impossible for us to find availability. We got lucky in 2024. It's been so impossible to book a cash stay, and we love this place so much, that we just closed on a 280 point purchase there. Never thought we'd do that, but it's so worth it. That pier is my happy place.

That's awesome. We've never been. Never even been to that area at all. So it would be a totally new experience for us. I need to do a LOT of research before we decide to go. My husband seems sort of "meh" about it but I think it looks relaxing. I'm one of those people who is just happy to relax on the beach, in the pool, and in the room. But he's more of a "let's go find something to do" person. Which means I'll need to find a good balance of things for us there. I have a feeling I will LOVE it and want to go back. But not sure if he will feel the same.

That's why we love HHI so much. You can do either. Pure relaxation around the pool and beach house, but plenty to do on the island if you're looking for something beyond that. Lots of nature walks, parks, tennis, golf, bike riding, movie theater, restaurants, shopping, etc. He will NOT be bored...unless he chooses to be!

And don't forget a pair of binoculars. Last time we were lucky enough to have a villa overlooking the water, where I could spend hours scanning the waters, watching the bald eagles nesting, the dolphins, the rays, the birds come and go, the ospreys, etc.

Thanks. I definitely need to look into the area. I know that Savannah isn't a super long drive so he might enjoy checking out the historical area there.

I'd actually like to use the points for possibly even Grand Villa stays during low seasons. Even if I had a 200+ point contract, it still wouldn't cover that many days, but it would be nice to have an 11-month booking advantage for Spring Break.

We're up in Nebraska, and summers are already plenty warm up here, so we don't usually head to warmer places like South Carolina during the summer months. We do majority of our travel in the December-March timeframes. We're already owners at Riviera and Aulani (pending). My hesitation would be having too many points to use during just a few months of the year and overindexing on vacations within the Disneysphere. But at least these points would only be around til 2042, so it's not an entire lifetime of vacations elsewhere that we'd miss out on.

The issue is the dues. With $11.9+ dues and quickly climbing the points will soon be upside down what you can rent them for if you needed to. You are looking to travel during the slow months minus Christmas and New Year's so I am not sure how much you really need the 11-month booking window. We travel a lot in May and September and book at 7-months. We also stay in lot of other places on HHI due to DH's family traveling to HHI since the mid-80's.

We had been considering buying HHI points but in looking at the dues math cheaper SAP makes a much better deal if you can live without the 11-month advantage.

Right, but it's only for a few more years. If we end up upside down vs rental rates, it's still small potatoes, and at least we avoided a big upfront cash hit, no?

I agree there's little advantage to an early booking window, except that there's only 5 grand villas and it would be annoying to be able to book 7 out 8 of the days we wanted over Spring Break but miss a day in the middle? Maybe that's just FOMO speaking.

To echo what others are saying, there are plenty of options if someone wishes to have a more "let's do something" vacation. Is he a golfer? If so, tons of places to tee it up. Walking/Hiking? Again, several options, one of the best being Pinckney Island Wildlife Refuge which sits between the two bridges you cross over on the way to the island proper. There are a few miniature golf places situated around the island. There are all manners of boat tours that leave out of Shelter Cove. Outside Hilton Head operates out of Shelter Cove and has fishing expeditions, dolphin sighting tours, guided kayak tours (or just rent a kayak), and more. The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina sits near the entrance to the Disney/Shelter Cove complex and offers topnotch entertainment by equity actors doing well known Broadway shows, comedy acts, and concerts. You can actually walk there from the resort in under 10 minutes. There are museums, trolley tours, historical areas (including Savannah and farther away, Charleston), and then there is the beach. Restaurants are numerous (I read somewhere around 300?) and most are good to very good.

Personally, I enjoy the low country vibe more, with the occasional wandering out to "do" something. Poolside is great, either at the main resort or, even better, at the Beach House pool which gives you immediate access to the beach. Sit out on the balcony and watch the wildlife, especially with a marsh view. Bike all over the island. Play the yard games at the resort. That's the sort of vacation I prefer. Either way, you'll love the vibe there and the best CMs anywhere. pirate:

Yeah, vacations are tricky for us, in general. We have an 11 year old who is autistic and has a developmental disability. So many of the things mentioned are not options for us. We can't do boat tours or shows or anything like that. We are not golfers. Our son can't ride a bike.

When we go places, for example, this summer we are headed to the Black Hills in SD. We mostly just check out trails (easy ones) and sightsee. We like "tourist trap" kind of things. And anything outdoors. Our son is most happy when he's outside.

We can't do a lot of restaurants because our son can get loud (laughter, not screaming or anything like that.) He also prefers to stand next to a table and won't sit. So it's hard to find places that are accommodating to that. (One reason we love Disney park trips is because no one care about his loud laugh or if he stands. Though we do just stick to quick service.)

With all of these worries...it's hard to travel places not knowing what will work for him.

You are correct. It is really hard to decide since the contract price is so cheap. We have been comparing the dues price to what rentals cost in Sea Pines. We alternate stays between Disney and Sea Pines. For what a 1-bedroom in dues cost at Disney we can rent a 2 or 3 bedroom unit in Sea Pines. It is a really hard decision, hence why we haven't done anything yet. :)

There are lots of walking options at HHI, including the bike trails which double as pedestrian walkways, as well. Something like 100 miles of them. I don't know if your 11-year old is capable of doing something like a parasailing, but that is available nearby. The wildlife refuge I mentioned would be an excellent spot as its acres upon acres of outdoors walking and seeing wildlife. The grounds at the main resort are lovely and include a butterfly garden and the yard games I mentioned: horseshoes (2 places), corn hole, giant checkers, bocce ball, and numerous hammocks where he could swing to his heart's content. Many of the restaurants on HHI have outdoor seating, and you could request a table on the periphery if you wished. In particular, a place like Skull Creek Boathouse has loads of outdoor seating though it offers no reservations. But, if you go at, say, 4PM you could probably easily sit outside and watch the full service marina to which it's attached. Same with Fishcamp on Broad Creek. They do take reservations, but have a large outdoor seating area including some chairs off the main floor where your son could flourish. I've also heard good things about the Sandbox Interactive Museum and the Coastal Discovery Museum. And the resort is so very calming and outdoorsy at the same time. A great place to be. I'm sure you will do some research, but I do believe HHI would be a superb place for all of you. :-)

How did I not know the beach house is closed 😐
Just arrived
Sorry to hear. Looking at the DVC website, I see the announcment:

The Beach House Pool at Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort will undergo maintenance starting January 20, 2025, and is expected to reopen at the end of March. The Big Dipper Pool, Spa, and Kiddie Pool will remain open. During this time, Guests may see or hear maintenance work in the area.

I'm sure it puts a bit of a damper on your trip, but I hope you still have fun and get to enjoy some time on the beach!

I wonder what they are updating?

I didn’t know either until I just got this email. We booked a confirmed rental, but at least one pool is open. Does this mean the entire complex at the Beach House is closed and we cannot access even the beach portion at all to even walk on the beach?

Good question. Two months isn't a long time to do any major work, so I'm guessing it will mostly be maintenance-required updates: they mention some pool work. Other possibilities are refurbing the kitchen/bathrooms (the plumbing had issues when I worked there) or perhaps refreshing the nature center and Surfmen's Room. You'll have to let us know next time you go!

Beach can be accessed without going through the beach house. You'll be able to park at the beach house and walk on the beach. But it's likely the shuttle will not be running since the beach house is closed.

I've looked at bit at other rental options, and we can obviously get a giant place pretty affordably. I like how much there is to do at HHI and little details like all the hammocks. Those details really drew our kids outside. If there are other alternatives that have similar or better amenities like that, we'd consider them.
