Has anyone replaced sofa cushions?

I've had my sofa for about 3 years now and the cushions, specifically the center cushion of 3, has lost its shape. It has sort of flattened and the sides aren't as squared as they used to be. I've unzipped the cover and looked inside and its a big chunk of foam with some other materials around it. I'm assuming there must be better cushion material out there, but what am I looking for? My previous sofa did not lose shape in the cushions like this. Do I need to see an upholsterer? Can I purchase material somewhere and replace the cushion filling myself?

I too am looking to do this for my 7 year old sofa that's in otherwise great shape. I saw a sign in a local upholsterer's shop that said they cut custom foam pieces so I figured I would just take my stuff to them. Not sure about the pricing though...

So it sounds like I should probably look up a few upholstery shops and see what they can do for me. I'm assuming there are varying quality levels of the foam. I'm thinking my current foam is pretty low on the list.

Vist a couple of upholstery shops or shops that sell fabric and foam. There is a huge variety of foam quality and prices. If you can, go for a better quality, it will last longer.

You may want to check back with the store you bought the couch from. We had a similar problem and the store had a repair done, for no cost! They still sold the same couch and had the foam cores to fit. It looked like brand new when they were done. This was a local store, Jordan's Furniture, in MA good luck

I agree with PP. We had a lazy boy sofa and the cushions were flat in a couple of years time. I called the store and they said to bring them in they would take car of it, they added more foam and I haven't had any more trouble, it's about 7 years old now. There was no charge, posssibly try that first.

Thanks all. I'll stop by the store where I bought the couch (Haverty's) and see what they say. It wasn't a super high-end couch, but it wasn't cheap either (about $900).

my mom did hers twice. Once through the store that she bought it from, was probably a few hundred dollars. The second time she and a friend did it themselves. You could really tell the difference the second time, they just didn't look as nice and weren't as comfortable. But she did extend her couch life by close to ten years by doing this.

I took the stuffing from some other old cushions and some pillow stuffing from Joann Fabrics left over from a previous project and just filled my misshapen cushions with those materials. I had to work with the stuffing material a bit to avoid lumpiness.

I'm sure a professional would do a better job (and certainly the best alternative is having Haverty's replace the cushions for free), but this approach was free to me and the cushions are still holding up three years later.

You might also be able to order new cushions from the manufacturer through Haverty's. The furniture store from which I bought my couch (not Haverty's) raved at the time of purchase that I could order new cushions when needed. Of course, when I tried to order new cushions about 1-1/2 or 2 years later, I was told the couch had been discontinued and the cushions could not be ordered.
