Greatest invention ever: the no-slam toilet seat

Kind of bored with how uncompetitive the Super Bowl has been, so I thought I'd chime in with something totally unrelated.......

I think the "No Slam"/"Whisper Close"/"Quiet Close"/"Slow Close" toilet seat is perhaps the greatest invention ever. I have a history of dropping the toilet seat and making a lot of noise. I suppose enough of dropping the seat and the bowl can crack.

These things are great. For those don't know what they are, they're seats that have a pretensioned hinge that functions similarly to a garage door spring. So when you drop the seat, it takes about a half minute to a minute to close. You can always push it down manually, but don't have to.

When we moved into our house in 2012, DW insisted on the silent seats for the bathroom next to the master bedroom and the one between the kitchen and living room. I didn't realize it was such an issue:confused3

The problem here is that the other three bathrooms in the house do not have the seats, and occasionally there's a really big SLAM when one forgets.:)

Same here. We replaced our upstairs toilet a few months ago and it came with the slow-close lid. Our 2-year-old downstairs toilet doesn't have one. So when we use that one, or go to my mom's house, both DH and I forget, give the lid a push, and BAM!!!

Bought one the other day and installed it. But it still doesn't close if you don't give it a bump to close. How do you train a man to put the seat down?;)

We close the lid everytime you flush so no matter what the lid is put down! I saw a thing on TV once about what is released if you flush with lid open and anything like toothbrushes or towels get contaminated with it- after that seat down every flush! I will even put up a sign when company comes saying to please close the lid before flushing!

I saw it too! The germs can fly through the air something like 20 feet every time you flush with the lid up.

Just finished a remodel of our 2 main baths, put these in. A co-worker warns that next time you got to a hotel or a friends house, you will slam down the seat.

:rotfl2: I was thinking the same thing! I like slamming the lid when DH leaves it up, which is hardly ever, but still.... the loud BAAM makes for a lasting training device!

I guess my husband and I are the only ones who HATE the soft-close seats! They take forever to close (to us) so you have to stand around and wait until it closes completely before flushing. It's much faster and easier to lower the lid yourself and flush. When we were shopping for a toilet seat for our newly installed toilet, it was a requirement that it didn't have the soft-close feature!

Well - as a guy I always put down both the seat and the lid, unless it's a commercial toilet seat (one of those U-shaped things). I insist my wife do the same. I remember some advice column that said a good compromise is to insist that all parties close the lid so that it's not forced on half the population that they have to leave the seat down for the other half. Everyone has to do something.

I have heard some women saying that the seat should be down and the lid up for their benefit.

They can be pushed down with very little effort. I don't get why it would be a deal breaker.

My wife actually thinks the lid should be up for flushing. She's afraid that it's trapping in germs and various "stuff" that should air out. I don't agree. I know someone who used to work for a general contractor, and he said that various "stuff" tends to aerate and bits of it end up all over the bathroom. It's easier to scrub down the toilet seat lid than the rest of the bathroom.

A former live-in girlfriend would withhold certain, ah....benefits. Putting the seat down is so ingrained with me now that I even do it if I use the stall in a public men's room.
