DH bought a TON of hamburger and hot dog buns for the superbowl a few weeks ago, and I stuck them in the freezer, not thinking if they'll still taste okay..

Do buns usually do okay in the freezer? And for how long?? I'm pulling some out for dinner tonight and i'm hoping they'll still taste good?!:confused3

I freeze them. They usually are only good frozen for a month or so. I also let then defrost out on the counter not in the microwave. When you defrost them in the microwave they sometimes get hard.

I've had buns frozen for months and they've been fine when thawed. We have a chest freezer, it's currently unplugged but sometimes I find these killer deals at the bread outlet (buns and bread for $50 a pack!) and stock up like crazy, I come home, put it in the freezer and plug it in. :)

Freeze all types of bread products all the time, if you plan to freeze long term I would put the bag inside a freezer zip bag just to ward off freezer burn a bit longer. We like to toast the buns after freezing sometimes, makes them taste a bit fresher.

So I just finished dinner, and this is what I'll do next time...the buns were a hard around the edges but still edible!

Thanks everyone!

It's just DH and me, so we can never get through a pack of hamburger buns or hot dog rolls before they get moldy or stale. My Mom gave me a great idea. When we bring a pack of buns home from the store, we put each individual bun in a sandwich bag and then put we put all the bagged buns back into the original bag the buns came in, right into the freezer. That way the buns are double bagged to help them freeze longer and I can just pull out only what I need. And then I just recycle the sandwich bags and reuse them over and over.

This is a great tip especially since it's just me and my DH also! Thanks! :thumbsup2

Steaming them works better than toasting when they have been frozen. Just tear off a big piece of alum. foil big enough to make an envelope to hold them, open up the buns to expose the inner edges, and then wet your hand and "flick" some water droplets over the buns a few times. Then seal up the foil and heat them in the oven for about 8-10 minutes at about 325F. The water droplets will have formed just enough steam to soften them up beautifully.

NEVER microwave bread, but especially not pre-frozen bread -- it gets chewy.

Wow! Another great tip! Thank you!:thumbsup2:cool1:

We microwave frozen buns all the time. MIL got us a fabric envelope thing that I think does the same thing as the foil steaming tip mentioned earlier. We throw the frozen buns in the fabric case, microwave it about 20 seconds & they are nice & fresh. I think you could probably wrap them in a dish towel for the same effect.

This is what we do. I use a cloth napkin though. Works perfectly.
