First Communion Gift from Godparents

This question may have been asked before, but I did not see it while searching.

Are there gifts that the Godparents are 'supposed' to give to their Godchildren for their first communion?

I am not Catholic, but am a Godmother to my niece. Her Godfather, who was Catholic, passed away last year. Her Godfather's wife, who is her aunt, is also interested in knowing if there is a certain gift she should be giving in his honor.

No, there isn't any set gift to give. DS12 got a rosery from Scottland from his Godfather and money from his Godmother, DD10 got pearls added to her add a pearl necklace and DS10 got a cross for his room and money. We will probably buy our Goddaughter's First Communion Dress when the time comes. Personally, I think Godparents should give something of religious significance, but that is not necessary.

I am not Catholic but am Godmother to my best friend's daughter. Someone here told me to go to www.religiousjewelry.com (or it might be www.religiousjewelrystore.com). They have boxes you can order that are personalized with the child's name and date of First Communion. The box is used to store all of their "catholic" things like crucifix, rosary beads, medals, etc. My best friend really liked it and ended up buying one as a baptismal gift.

If she doesn't have one, you could get her a nice gold cross on a neckchain that she could have blessed. Usually a godmother or godfather buys this for the child when they are baptized, but if she doesn't have one, it would be a nice gift now.

I'm glad you posted this. I have to go to my Goddaughter's communion in a few weeks. If I want to have something engraved I should probably order it now. I'm no longer a practicing Catholic and I really don't know what to get her. Her name is Angel and I often get her something with an angel on it. So that would be a nice idea for her gift. Maybe I could get her an angel charm.
