DVC Point Transfer Rules

Hello point geniuses!

If I’m understanding these previous posts I think I made a whoopsie. My MIL owns direct points, I resale. She graciously booked a stay for me and a friend at the Disneyland hotel on her contract, as I had enough points to cover this that I hoped to transfer to her (she only ever vacations in WDW)

My points were going to expire prior to when she planned to travel next so I banked them. It now seems that was not the best approach, as I can’t transfer these banked points to her correct?

Sigh- I feel bad that I’ve complicated this for her. But sounds like this will need to be an iou?

Once banked, they can’t be transferred. Had you transferred first, she could have banked them.

The only exception for transfers of banked points is when it’s between accounts owned by the same people.

You could also try to explain the situation to MS. Since it's for your ML and not a stranger they might allow a one time exception and un-bank them. But would you really use your get out of jail card for this, when you can easily book a reservation for her?

this transferring of points sounds interesting--just wondering how it all works
in 2027 well be basically into having to borrow points to get our 1 week in which I dont want to start borrowing cause it wont take long and well be out of those points
we only have 100 points for the Poly which takes 125 a week when we go the end of janI would just pay a bit then run the points down to nothing
I know we can take shorter trips but it seems once you get there its almost time to go home
so anyways just wondering how this transferring of points works
how do I find a person that wants to transfer points
another poster mentioned something about cash and the CM stopped the tranfser at that point but whoever is transferring you the points gets something for doing so
please explain all of this
thanks

There is a forum section devoted to connecting people that want to rent out or transfer their points to another person. https://www.disboards.com/forums/dvc-rent-transfer.29/
My understanding is that you can't mention to Member Services that you are paying for the point transfer, but that happens behind the scenes between the two owners.

An additional solution, Dznypal, would be to purchase the available 24 one time use points directly from Disney if you are planning within 7 months of the trip. They are $20 a point

Thanks for the link. Thst was very helpful
Sorry but another question what is the difference then between renting and transferring
Would this count as a new reservation then coukd the 2 be merged into one
I had thought of buying the OTU points but I’d have to wait till 7 months I’d be worried nothing would be left. I’d like to do it all at once. But it for sure be an option

Transferring is when one member transfers some of their points to another member. Both must be DVC owners.

Renting is when one owner books a reservation for someone else using points in their membership. The renter can be anyone because the owner retains control of it.

We are allowed to rent reservations for a fee. We are not allowed to accept money or pay for a transfer of points because points have no real value.

If one decides to transfer, then it’s best not to mention to the CM that money is ch aging hands since it’s prohibited and why we have had reports if CMs not doing it.

Transfers require a lot of trust because once they leave your account, they are gone and if you don’t get all your money, you have no recourse.

Same if you are getting a transfer…if you pay and the owner doesn’t do it…requires a three way call to MS…you can’t do anything about it because you weren’t supposed to pay.

Trying to understand the transfer changes. We have 2 contracts with 2 different use years. First is AKL with a June UY and the other is BLT with an August UY. To complicate things even more the AKL contract was bought resale before Riviera was out so it's grandfathered in with the old rules and I can book Riviera and even the Disneyland Hotel with that contract. I cannot do that with the BLT contract (that was also purchased resale).

We currently have a stay booked at the Disneyland hotel in June using our AKL contract. But I have an excess of points in our BLT contract and would love to use those if I could instead, but am I understanding it correctly that in this situation I cannot transfer those points to the AKL contract and be able to use them for the Disneyland hotel? If it was another hotel would I technically be transferring and then immediately banking those 2024 August UY points from BLT to be used in the June 2025 UY for the AKL contract?

Gosh just typing that out confused me!

The answer is no. You aren’t transferring points into a contract, you are transferring them into a different membership ID. The points retain the same UY and resort restrictions.

Think of of each of your memberships as a shelf. Your contracts sit on each shelf.

Transfer points simply get moved to a different shelf. DVC creates a temporary contract to hold them for you but they look and act the same.

If they are BLT and restricted when on their own shelf, they remain that way when they move the shelf that holds your AKC contracts.

Good news! DVC just changed the rules for Point Transfer. You should now be able to transfer those points you banked over to her.

g. Allotted, Banked, Borrowed, Reservation, and Holding Home Resort Vacation Points may be Transferred.

Not to be over-reactive here, but this borderline transformative for multi-UY owners.

Yes, you could transfer before if everything was planned out (or if DVC did it for you despite the rules), but you could only transfer at the 'right' time, and by transferring you lost flexibility. Order of operations really mattered.

Now the barriers are reduced, you just need to figure out what points would be best shortly before booking a stay with multiple UYs of points. Current state of the points basically doesn't matter.

I hope:
  • They either anticipated an increase in calls/chats to Member Services and/or see an increase in contacts
  • Use that as justification to build the capability to allow guests to do it themselves online as part of the booking process
I would love to just book a stay with any UY of points online.
