On my way to WDW I'll have a 2 day layover in Boston for work. I'll be renting a car. I'll need to drive from Logan west to Gardner on highway 2. I'll then be returning to Logan heading south from Saugus area on highway 1.

Am told that some routes around Logan have no cash lanes. That means being forced to pay the rental agencies transponder fee along with the tolls. Any Boston locals here with any advice on tolls or avoiding them for the above routes?

I live about 30 miles west of Boston. I don't use those routes but my first thought was where are you from? MA fast passes are compatible with many other states so if you are from one and have your own, maybe you could bring it along and just enter the rental car info online to your account once you have it?

As far as I know..... the only toll that doesn't have a cash option in the Boston area is the Tobin bridge - which I don't think you will be traveling. I *think* you will be taking the tunnel to the Pike (rt 90) and then continue on rt 90 to 95, then follow that to route 2. Once you get off the Pike, there aren't any tolls. You should be able to pay cash for your trip - be aware that most cash tolls are to the right, ez pass (transponders) are toward the left - not 100%, but that's the general set up.

On your way back, from Saugus, it looks like you will be going east of the Tobin via the Ted Williams tunnel, so again you should be okay.

Edited to add last sentence.

I agree with above. Going from Saugus to Logan, you'll get off rte. 1 before the Tobin Bridge so no toll there. (The toll at the Tobin is for southbound traffic only.)

As of May 28, 2016 the Mass Pike - Route 90 - is cashless tolls as well. If you go this route there will be tolls.

When are you traveling? Cashless tolls start on the Mass Pike in October.

Not yet - scheduled as of October. I guess I just assumed OP was going earlier.

LOL, I did panic for a moment as I drove the Pike 3 x the past month and thought I had failed to notice!

I live in AZ. In the southwest we don't believe much in tolls!! There are none here!

I'm traveling Sept. 27th-28th. So the mass pike rd 90 including ted williams tunnel have cash lanes?

From Saugus to Logan I can take 1 to 60 to 1a to rental car returns without a toll or do I have to use rt 90 into Logan off 1a to get to the rental returns?

The Rte 1 to 60 to 1a will avoid Rte 90 Mass Pike. There aren't any tolls on that route. But it has lots of traffic, depending on the time of day, and can be stop and go in sections.

It would be very early morning to catch a 6am flight so traffic should be good.
