Does your teen have a loft or bunk bed?

My dd 13 wants to re-do her room this spring because its "too little girl" for her now :sad1: She has a very small room and hang-out space is limited. I was thinking of getting her a loft bed with either an open space under it so she can put her dresser there to make more floor space, or her small desk and buy a bunch of floor cushions too stick under there.
Then I found a bunk bed with a futon on the bottom and thought that might work since its a place that she can sit when she has friends over. The problem is she is 13 and this is the last time I plan on buying furniture for her room so I want to make sure that in 1 year, or in 6 years, she'll still be okay with it.
Does anyone here have a teen that still sleeps on a loft or bunk bed? Are they okay with it, or do they absolutely hate it?

Right now she has a metal frame daybed that I had gotten a whole bunch of throw pillows to make it more like a couch to hang out on, but she hates it because its squeaky.

My 12 year old DS has had a loft bed for years. He has recently started asking for a regular bed saying a loft bed is too babyish for a teenager and that it's too hard for him to watch TV in his bedroom from his loft bed. We're trying to decide if we should get him a regular bed, or mount the TV on the wall.

I think DS thinks the bed is babyish because it has railings all along the sides. He really just wants a regular bed he can sit on.

If you have the room I would go with a double or bigger if you can. Something that when they move out on their own will still make sense

My dd thinks a loft bed is cool, but she hasn't always had one so right now its the novelty of it. I get this feeling she's just going to end up with a mattress on her floor

My son had this several years ago:

He had it when he was probably 7-9ish and he outgrew it pretty quickly and wanted a normal bed. We took a big loss re-selling it, and it was horrible to take apart. The whole thing came crashing down on us when we moved the wrong piece at the wrong time. I felt was a horrible mistake all the way around!

Oh, and you better have really high ceilings for one like this because it's VERY tall!

Unfortunately we don't have room for a double bed in there, its a very small room.

Are loft beds generally taller than regular bunks? My dses have bunk beds and they are fine with the 8ft ceilings.

We had that same space problem when my son was that age, so we got him a futon bunk bed. It was a double ffuton couch on the bottom and a twin bed on the top. It was great because his friends could sit around on the couch or sleep over on the double futon. We got a higher priced futon matress so guests would be comfortable when the slept on it.

My son 15 has a queen size bed, but he is tall, and still growing.

My daughter who is almost 12, has the bunk bed, double on bottom, single on top. I love it, absolutely love it. We don't have extra bed rooms, so at times when my friends stayed over I just stuck her on top, and they took the bottom.

It is a great spacesaver!

My ds11 has a bed that can be a bunk bed, a loft bed or a regular twin size bed we got it from a friend about three years ago and he absolutely loves it.

You should look into one like that so it is flexible.

My daughter is in the loft bed. She has a very small room and it maximizes space. I highly recommend Flexa they are an interchangeable system. Should she want to she could buy different legs and change it to a regular bed when she gets to college. The furniture is a little on the expensive side but it's really well made. I bought my daughter this bed when she was small and I plan on it carrying her well into the college years.

I guess my thought is where is she going to sleep when she gets sick?

Do you plan on being in this house a long time? What about a Murphy Bed? I know they are expensive and not sure if it is doable but I would certainly check it out.

Or how about a pull out loveseat? That way she can have couch or bed. Just a thought there.

My son has this one from WalMart

Even though we've got 8 foot ceilings, he now complains that there isn't enough room for him to sit up in bed and that he has to be careful when he wakes up not to sit up, otherwise he'll bang his head against the ceiling.

I'm actually looking at doing a Murphy bed for his room soon. Mainly because he has kept his desk under the loft bed and likes how open his room is with the bed raised up. Then someday, when he moves out, the room is ripe for conversion to an office. :lmao:

I figure I won't hear any complaints about bumping his head if we go this route and a full or queen size bed won't take over the whole room.

Our younger DD had a cabin bed with a bookcase and a sheepskin rug and cushions beneath. I also made curtains so that she could have a small den in there. She loved it but we all got fed up with the wrestling with the mattress to change the sheets and make up the bed. She now has a normal bed and loves it even more.

I have to say sleeping in a raised bed was pretty grim when she was sick as we either had to put a basin up there with her or she had to leap in and out of bed, at least with a bunk bed she could have shifted to the lower bunk for the duration of the illness.

DS loves his loft bed. We got it for him when he was 14 because of space issues as well. It's metal, double size with a desk and shelving underneath. He does homework at one end and the desk is big enough for his TV, laptop and Xbox on the other end. He's now 16 and 6 ft. tall, still using it with no problems.

My kids have gotten rid of their loft beds except the 10 year old and she is really wanting to get rid of it as well. The older 2 have double beds so they have them when they move out and the 10 year old now figures she is to old for hers and wants a regular bed so i guess this year will be the year she gets back into a regular one.................sigh, they were a waste of $$$ in our house dispite the kids all really really wanting them.

We got rid of DS15's loft bed last summer. It was getting tricky for him to climb up and down the ladder. It was a great space saver, but we felt like he was just too old for it. We bought a regular twin bed, but there is a trundle underneath.

My biggest gripe about the loft bed was how hard it was to change the bedding. His bed was against the wall in a corner, so it was almost impossible to put clean sheets on without doing some serious acrobatics. You can't move the bed out, AND it is up high, so you may have to stand on a chair to reach it. Something to think about!

My dses have bunk beds and I know how much of a pain it is to put on the sheets. Luckily my dd does it herself so I wouldn't have to worry about it.

Thanks everyone, you've all given me something to think about.

My guy has had a pillow topped queen for several years.
