DS9 wants to make cut out sugar cookies but I don't have a recipe I like. Any suggestions?

I was hoping to get out of making sugar cookies this Christmas. DS (24) texted me asking if we can make them on Christmas Eve so I guess I'll be making sugar cookies too.

Most recipes have you refrigerate the dough so make sure and leave yourself enough time.

This is my grandmother's. It's perfect:

2/3 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup milk
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 cups flour

Cream butter and sugar.
In separate bowl, beat eggs, then combine baking soda, milk, vanilla.
Combine liquid into butter and sugar.
Stir flour in slowly.
Chill 1/2 hour or so.
Roll to around 1/8 inch thick and cut as desired.
Bake for 8 minutes at 325 degrees

ETA: This isn't my grandmother's, but it's super easy icing:
1/2 cup powdered sugar. Mix in 2 tablespoons milk and combine very well. Add additional milk if desired to depending on consistency. Add food coloring as desired.

Looks like you already got some good recipes. I've been baking sugar cookies for years and have perfected my own methods. Here are my secrets to the best sugar cookies:

- Don't skimp on refrigerating the dough. If the recipe says overnight, be sure it's in there for at least 8 hours. It keeps the dough from falling apart while rolling.
- Don't skimp on flour while rolling the dough. Dust the countertop and the rolling pin generously. You don't want sticky dough!
- Don't skimp on vanilla. Add the required amount of vanilla extract while mixing. Then add a little more. Then add a little more. My cookies always have triple the vanilla, or even more.
- While rolling the dough, fold it over and roll it again. This gives your cookies those flaky little layers.
- If you want to add sprinkles before baking, spritz the raw cookies with a little water before adding them. This will keep the sprinkles from falling off during and after baking.
- Bake the cookies until you see the first hint of brown on the edges. This will make them chewy. Bake a bit longer if you want them crispy.
- Make sure they're completely cool before frosting. Add sprinkles right away before the frosting starts to harden. Pat the sprinkles down with the back of a spoon to keep them from falling off. Don't stack the frosted cookies until the frosting hardens and is no longer sticky.
- Stash a container of cookies away from your adult boys if you want to have any left for Christmas. Those guys can really make them disappear!

Happy baking!

These look like great recipes- I might have to try one or four, hahaha!

While talking cookie recipes, does anyone have a great chocolate chip cookie recipe that gives buttery, thin, crisp cookies? Tate's are our favorites (if you are familiar with the brand) but I'd love to make some myself.

I like this one:

(Betty Crocker Best Christmas Recipes book)
Melt in your mouth sugar cookies

1 -1/2 c Powdered Sugar
1 c. Butter, softened
1 tsp. Vanilla
1/2 tsp Almond Extract (I never have this, so use more vanilla instead, lol)
1 egg
2-1/2 AP flour
1 tsp Baking Soda
1 tsp Cream of Tartar

Beat sugar, butter, extracts and egg, Stir in flour, soda, and tartar. Cover, refrigerate 2 hours.

Oven 375. Use grease or parchment paper on cookie sheets. Roll half the dough to 1/4" thick. Cut, place on sheet. Bake 7-8 minutes until edges are light brown, remove and cool. Decorate as desired.

Decorator Frosting:
Mix 1 c. Powdered sugar, 1/2 tsp vanilla, 1 TBLS water or milk; divide and color..

Decorator Glaze:
Mix 2 c. Powdered Sugar, 2 TBLS water, 2 TBLS light corn syrup, 1/2 tsp almond extract); divide and color.

Royal Icing:
Beat 16 oz Powdered Sugar, 1/3 c warm water (105-115F), 1 TBLS meringue powder, 1 tsp extract (almond/vanilla), and 1/2 tsp cream of tartar 7-8 minutes until very stiff. Divide and color.
