Hi Everyone, was just curious, are dogs able to be in the downtown Disney area? I thought I had remembered seeing them before but might be off. Also does Disneyland have a kennel and if so how is it? :goodvibes

DtD area: yes, if on a leash
Inside businesses in DtD: up to each individual business

Kennel: Yes. You must provide various documents (rabies, etc....) so you will want to research carefully to make sure you have everything needed. (714-781-4000 and ask for the Kennel) They do NOT walk, feed, etc... your dog. You must come out of the Park to the kennel to do that yourself periodically throughout the day.

I have to chime in here. I know I will offend someone here, but I really feel offended as well. With that said here I go.
I have a cousin who is extremely allergic to dogs. Having a dog near her at Disneyland would definitely ruin her visit. If not worst.
I also have a friend who is deathly afraid of dogs after being attacked and mauled by one. And yes she was told “my dog does not bite”.
I think things have gone so far to the left in this world that people are only thinking of their personal agendas and not the effect they can have on others. We all have rights and I for one feel like dogs in public places violate mine.
Who assumes the labiality if the dog bites? The business owner that let the dog in or the owner? History has shown us that both will be held responsible. And after all we all know who has the deepest pockets in this situation.
What about health codes? Do you really want to find a dog hair in your latte?
Then there is the issue of where do they do their “business”? Hello!? (Pretty disgusting to me.) I have witnessed a dog peeing on a basket of merchandise at a flea market. The poor vendor lost out, and yes the dog and owner scurried off.
There is an exception as to dogs that help the handicapped. But they are highly trained. They also stand out with their vests on stating that they are handicapped dogs, so that people with fears or allergies can see them and stay far away.
So, for me please leave your dog at home or in the kennel. You know I for one do not find your dog cute, nor do I believe they have a place in public, unless it is called a “dog park”. pluto: :tink:

Your opinion is fine but please don't feel everyone has to feel the same way or cater to suit others views. There are many things out in public that may offend or annoy certain individuals. The only way to avoid that is to not go in public. Tolerance is key.

That said there is certainly proper etiquitte and rules involved here. City codes do not allow animals into restaurants for instance except service animals. Owners must pick up after their animals and can be cited if they do not. For me I would not take my dog just to walk around DTD.

There is no way to enforce any ban on animals in DTD. This is because Disney has a kennel next to the gates thats been there for decades. We park in the garage and walk or take the dogs on the tram to DTD and then walk from there to the kennels. Security has asked us if we were headed to the kennels so I assume they do not want people just out for a walk with their dogs around Disney. If someone is bothered by dogs we try to sit away from them. Generally everyone wants to put the dogs and are all smiles!

The kennels are located just to the right of the Disneyland gates. There are small inside kennels for small animals and large kennels outside in a covered area. There is a small grass walking area available next to the kennels.

The CM's will feed your dog at desired time as well as provide water. Our dogs are sensitive to other brands of food so we bring our own and leave it on top of the kennel to feed ourselves.

The CM's will not handle your animal in any way. That means you must visit your dog to take them out for walks a few times during your stay.

For those interested, Sea World, Universal Studios and Magic Mountain also have kennels. Knotts Berry Farm does not.

U know .. now that you mention it dreams. I have never seen anybody walk there dogs in DTD.. that is the perfect place to on a nice sunny day..

I've seen plenty of pups on the trams, walking from the parking structure to the parks, walking thru security to get to the kennels and walking in DTD. I have no problems with dogs who are well behaved and most owners are nice enough to keep their dogs away from those with allergies or with fear issues. Of course there are always the few bad dogs and bad dog owners that don't care and those are the ones that cause issues for those of us who are good and do follow the rules. We thought about taking our pups with us a time or two but we ultimately decided against it and boarded them instead. For us it was worth the peace of mind knowing our dogs were in a well maintained kennel with devoted staff who would play with them, feed them, and make it a vacation for the dogs as well as us. We just couldn't picture leaving them crated while we were off having fun, shouldn't they have fun too? So either way we did not use the kennels but we saw plenty of people who did and we never had any issues with any of them. :)

All dogs, small or large, have their kennels indoors. So it is climate controlled, even for my big guy Gus (Great Dane). However, there are only about 5 or 6 of the large kennels. I always arrive before park opening to insure a place for my boy:thumbsup2 All of the CM's are great, my favorite is Jenny! She always takes Gus' bed and toys and sets up his kennel while we visit the park. Gus loves the tram (even though we have seen the occassional disapproving stares).;)

I have seen a dog in the Jazz Kitchen. This was at a table in side the fenced area on the restaurant side, not the take-out side.
I truly understand people traveling with their pets. And getting them from a "Pet-Friendly" hotel or the parking structure to the kennel is understandable.
And believe me I am very tolerable. This topic is just very sensitive to me. I believe knowledge is powerful and I thought it was very important for others to realize how others feel. I remember reading here on the Dis sometime back from a Dis member seeing a dog in a stroller in Fantasyland. I am a rule follower and don't believe in treading on anyone. I just think this issue of dogs has gone to an extreme that would not have been tolerated let's say 25 years ago.
And as I started this in my first post on this subject, I knew going into this one I would offend people. But there are two sides here and I just thought it was high time to voice the other side.

Has something changed in the last year or two? When you enter the kennels there are numerous ones inside the building. If you continue through the office area there are more larger kennels outside behind the kennel building. These are covered but still are outside and not climate controlled. I've never seen anything inside that would be big enough for a great dane!

I was at Downtown Disney recently and was sitting on a planter (near Build a Bear I believe) enjoying our Wetzals next to a woman who had two small dogs with her. Security came up and very politely told her that her dogs couldn't be there, although I don't remember the exact words. I think you can walk them through to the kennel but not hang out with them there. I've seen plenty of dogs walking through Downtown Disney and assumed they were heading to the kennel or back.

I for one, take my dog everywhere. Granted, hes a yorkie, 4 lbs and rides in my purse. I wouldnt take him to Disneyland though, I cant stand the thought of him caged up in a kennel, while the rest of the family is having fun. So I leave him with my mom. I dont care if people give me dirty looks if I have him in my purse. Which people never do. He is not hurting anyone. He is sitting there looking cute :) I DO notice people giving that mom a dirty look when her child is crying and throwing a fit because they cant have a desired toy lol..or the child that is puking all over the ground ( been there, done that LOL)

I would love for Disney to put together a dog boarding facility with doggie day care, playgroups, swimming, etc. People are willing to spend more on their dogs these days (myself included) and I think Disney could make a lot of money if they had a state of the art kennel and boarding spot. That way my dogs could have as much fun on a Disney vacation as my hubby and I! :)

I know that at Disneyworld they have a place that looks pretty awesome!

Maybe someday we will get something like that at Disneyland!

I'm sorry your friend is afraid of dogs, your other friend has allergies, and you personally don't like dogs - but really it's your responsibility as an adult to deal with your issues - not the worlds to accomidate you. I have issues with crowds and being around people - but I don't ask others not to go to public places.

Also I don't believe it's a law for service dogs to wear a vest, and as many of those animals provide different services you shouldn't be so quick to judge every dog you see.

He is in puppy class right now, graduating on Sunday, with a graduation cap and all :) My kids go to school, so my puppy belongs in school :) Hes very well mannered ( thanks to the class) lol

And where, exactly, will you allow your animal to defecate? Where small children play? Where my grandma accidentally dropped her purse? Where a group of teens are sitting on the ground visiting? In a fountain or a tree, to be spread on to common ground with a light morning rain? Really? Because no where in DTD where I have ever seen says "dogs poop here".
They are animals. Not humans. No matter how much transference occurs.
Again, respect for your fellow humans.
Has it really become such a foreign concept to so many people????:scared1:

This is America, where dogs are titled "Man's Best Friend." And you bring a plastic bag to pick up their mess with.

Problem solved. :rolleyes1

Everyone has things that annoy them. I don't like being around smokers. My eyes get dry and red, I cough, and I hate the lingering smell. For the most part, there are not smokers around me at any given time. If I see someone smoking, I can easily choose to walk away. The same goes for dogs. If someone chooses to avoid dogs, it's really quite easy to do so. If, by chance, you were in a location that had a dog, you could easily avoid it. If you're in a restaurant that allows pets and don't want to be seated near it, all you have to do is ask.

Regarding the whole dog poop thing: I know there are exceptions, but most people that choose to walk their dogs in public places are really quite diligent about cleaning. I think humans are the gross ones! It bugs me to no end to see people toss their gum, half eaten food, or empty cups on the ground. Heck, I've even parents stash dirty diapers in bushes or just throw them on the street because there wasn't a trash can around. How's that for respecting your fellow humans?

Amen Soaptopia!!! They are also our babies

My pup is definitely my first child! She costs lots of money for shots and various vet appointments, I buy her toys, food, puppy pads (We put them and a plastic tarp underneath a grass patch so she can go out on the balcony of our apt to go potty), even clothes! I love her more than a million bucks. $$$ :dogdance:

Exactly, people can be so gross. It's sad how many people can just leave their trash wherever like it's somebody else's job to clean it up. I feel bad simply leaving my plates at places for others to clean up. I am very considerate of my dog and the grounds she walks on. And a lot of people are. DTD would be a wonderful place for a dog walk with tons of sights for my puppy to see and sniff! Next time I stay at a dog friendly hotel I want to take her for a ride on the tram! She would love that, and specially all of the attention she would get! :cutie:
