Disney Store Kicks Off May the 4th Early With Exclusive ‘Star Wars’ Merch Drops Every Week

Leading up to the 45th anniversary of 'The Empire Strikes Back', the Disney Store is bringing the hottest apparel and merch to fans across the galaxy.

May the 4th be with you…because we’re less than a month away from the annual Star Wars celebration, and the Disney Store is already releasing stylish merch collections (and teasing others that will drop on the holiday itself).

Coming to you from a galaxy far, far away, these limited-edition drops include a lineup of apparel, collectibles and more celebrating the George Lucas franchise, which is also marking the 45th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back this year. Leading up to the May 4 launch, the Disney Store will release a galactic ton of Star Wars-themed product drops every week starting Friday, April 11 — but there’s already some interplanetary styles that are live right now.

Starting off the weekly drops is the Endor Droids Collection on April 11, which includes C-3PO and R2-D2 dresses, followed by the Star Wars Hoth Collection on April 25, celebrating 45 years since the theatrical release of (arguably) the franchise’s greatest sequel. Right now, you can find the “Dated Collection” available at the Disney Store now, featuring May the 4th shirts, pullovers, and more with fan favorite characters (like Luke Skywalker facing down Darth Vader, or our favorite droids R2-D2 and C3PO).

Just as Darth Vader was obsessed with bringing over his estranged son to the dark side, we’ve been obsessed with the cool new gear and collectibles we’re seeing for The Empire Strikes Back, too. On sale at the Disney Store starting on May 4, they’ve announced everything dropping from a mug featuring a certain ice planet battle, to a fuzzy tauntaun hat, and apparel featuring classic poster art from the sequel. For fans of Princess Leia, a limited-edition collectible figure with also drop (with a run of just 4,890) donned in Hoth gear and trusty droid R2-D2.

Before the main celebration, on Friday, April 18, the Star Wars Hoth collection will release with a variety of frosty-colored products, including a Hoth jerseys, a Loungefly backpack with an AT-AT design, a collectible light saber, and more. Hoth is a fictional ice planet in the Star Wars universe that was the site of the Rebel Alliance’s Echo Base, and the site of one of the main battles in 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back.

I don't believe you are mistaken. I'm not an expert on all things Star Wars but this image is campaign art by Daniel Goozee.
Appears it was never used as an official movie poster but was used in a print ad.

Original Star Wars unused painting by Dan Goozee for a Star Wars promo poster

This painting is a varation of the final art used for an advertising campaign art from the original 1977 theatrical release of Star Wars was painted by movie poster veteran Daniel Goozee (Moonraker, Octopussy, Clash of the Titans, Superman IV).

The swashbuckling image, of Luke and Leia swinging on a rope, gun blazing, to make their escape from stormtroppers aboard the Death Star, appeared in at least one newspaper ad, but was not widely seen; in fact, apparently the artist himself was unaware that it had actually been used in the advertising at all, since it was just one of many pieces commissioned from various artists by Fox's publicity machine back in the 70s. The concept art is by Dan Gooze with design work by Tony Seiniger and Associates. Its army of stormtroopers on the bottom seems reminiscent of posters for biblical epics.

Goozee is a former Walt Disney "Imagineer" and fine artist who also painted a handful of sci-fi "originals" that were marketed as posters in the back of Famous Monsters and other Warren magazines during the height of the post-Star Wars sci-fi mania. This art was not published in The Art of Star Wars book, but its variant without C-3PO and R2-D2. Dan Goozee designed the below Star Wars poster in November 1977 for the studio. It was never used as an official movie poster but was used in a print ad.
