I just think its a bit weird with the professional sports. The U23 are not the best in the world, to Ponzies point, and the World Cup is way more important to everyone if it was the full teams, so its just seems to fall flat on its face. English is a bit weird as we have single Football associations for all parts of the UK, so it never really got off the ground as a "British team".
The 92 dream team was effectively an exhibition or an all star game. Did we see Magic, Jordan, Pippen & Bird stretched to their absolute best to create something amazing like the relay teams in athletics? They hardly got out of 2nd gear. Firstly, they didn't need to , and secondly, all they dreamt of when they were kids, I'll wager, was winning the NBA Finals. Same as soccer. Everyone wants to win the World Cup. I may well have it wrong with Ice Hockey, I get the whole USSR/USA matchup and the fervour in Canada, and I completely hold my hands up of my ignorance of the sport in general but sports where their participants earn multiples of millions of coin don't seem to sit well in the Olympics. Just my humble opinion.
