Dapper Day Questions

I decided to look up rates for the hotels for the event. Definitely more reasonable than rack rates. I have no idea what Dapper Days is, but do I need to be part of a group to book a room at the discounted rates? Also, do I need to attend any sort of activities to get that rate?

The answer to your questions is no. You don't need to register for anything (or be a member of anything) to get the rate. There really isn't anything to register for.

It is a negotiated rate that the Dapper Day organizers have negotiated with Disney specifically for those who will be participating in Dapper Day. So some might have ethical concerns about taking advantage of the rate if you weren't intending to participate. But I'll leave that to you and your conscience to sort out.

Your avatar makes me laugh, though, in light of your question. I can just see Hank Hill saying, "I have no idea what Dapper Days is, but the hotel rate was good." And then finding himself surrounded by a hotel full of dandies in town for Dapper Day. "That boy ain't right!"

There’s a lot of info here: http://dapperday.com/

The expectation is that you do dress up and attend the expo.

Actually, @Skyegirl1999 is correct about this. The expectation for using the convention rate is that you will actually support the convention by participating (i.e. dressing Dapper, however you choose to interpret that) and by purchasing tickets to the Expo (very inexpensive!) and DD merchandise (also inexpensive and cute!). Supporting the convention prevents abuse of the discount rates, which is what happened to Gay Days and Dapper Days when the discounts got let loose on the internet and people who weren't supporting the conventions were using the discounts like crazy. These are unofficial conventions and Disney charges them a LOT to hold their events on Disney property. Supporting the conventions helps keep these conventions going, which means a great deal to the people for whom these events have become a tradition.

I think we're all saying the same thing. As I pointed out, the rates are negotiated and intended for those participating in the event.

However, the answer to OP's specific question still remains "no." On the Dapper Day FAQ, it says, "The Disneyland Resort Group Sales website may mention requiring "convention registration," but we do not have nor require any registration and Disney is aware of this." It's not required to get the rate (according to the Dapper Day organizers).

But you, @Skyegirl1999, and I are all in agreement about the intent and expectation attached to the reduced hotel rates.

OK, thanks for the replies. Not going to do it. I was just curious what it was all ab out, but clearly it wouldn't be fair to take advantage. Was just trying to get a better rate at one of the onsite hotels.

Dapper Days are a lot of fun and it’s a great way to stay on-site with a discount. You don’t have to go all out in vintage wear, you can dress up (a little or a lot). We buy the expo tickets when we go too, but they aren’t expensive, around $15. It’s definitely a fun way to get a great rate at the on-site hotels! You don’t have to feel like you’re taking advantage, if you participate, you can use their discounts on tickets and rooms.

We love Dapper Day. As many have already said, you don't have to buy anything special or dress in vintage clothing. The intent of Dapper Day was to encourage people to 'dress in their Sunday best' like parkgoers did in Walt's time. You are free to interpret what dressing nicely means. Many of us love to explore vintage looks but it's not the only way to go. A lot of people enjoy coordinating so that their party has a 'look', like a particular color, a theme (we once used Club 33 as inspiration), or just a feel. A few years ago, we saw a group dressed as Disney trash cans LOL. That is, their tops each had the design of a different trash in Disneyland, which if you have ever looked, are all different designs. But how you can interpret the intent is very broad, like adding a bow tie or fun hat. And the Expo is a lot of fun, held right inside Disneyland Hotel. You can walk around and look at all the vintage things, take pictures with their photo ops, watch dancers, go to a car show, and so on. They sell really unique items there, too, often Disney-inspired.

Anyway, don't be afraid of Dapper Day. It requires very little to participate, you can go all in, or something in between. Attendees keep the event going which is good for everyone; the event expands, people have fun, and the great hotel rates are a bonus.

You should really consider it. Dapper Days is totally easy. You just need to dress up that one day and go to one of the events. There will be hundreds of people doing it. You don't need to buddy up with anyone and become part of a group. Your own family can be totally autonomous. Imagine how fun it can be for your kids to dress up for one day out of a week long stay.

Some people "dressed up" are dressed down compared to me on a normal Sunday - seriously. It's not hard at all to participate. Buy a ticket to the convention, which will have really cool stuff for sale and spend a couple hours looking at it at the Disneyland Hotel. Honestly, I think a Dapper Day would be way more fun than any normal day at DLH.

Just be serious about it if you are going. If you cancel, you lose a full night's hotel fee.

We’re going for dapper days just to get the rate. It will be fun to see everyone’s dressed up and they really do have cute merch.

We utilize the Dapper day rates -- sometimes twice a year (there is a Spring and Fall Dapper Day). We get Expo tickets and make that our departing day activity before going home. Tickets are $12 and the Expo is really fun.

Our group likes to dapper day disneybound. This last year our group did Hercules (Hercules, Meg, Hades, Pain, Panic), Beast and Belle, and Haunted Mansion and Pirates (not pictured)
A previous year we did Up (Mr. Fredrickson and Russell) and Monsters Inc (Sully, Mike, Boo, Randall, Roz, also not pictured)
It's challenging, but super fun.

Ok, I caved. I couldn't resist. $429, absurd as it sounds, is as good a rate as I've seen at GCH. Compared to $766 for July, well, I'll dress up like a Dapper for that savings.
And don't forget to buy tickets to the DD Expo, too! You don't have to go to the Expo (but it is fun just to walk around and hear the band). There are DISers who buy the tickets even when they can't attend, just to support the convention.

Randomly, we will be there on Nov. 3rd.
Now I'm feeling pressure to come up with a good outfit! lol

Seriously, though...
Other than the Expo and dressing up, are there other activities that go along with dapper day to know about?

Sometimes there are other events, which will be posted on the DD website. There used to be a Soirèe that was held on the Friday night of DD Weekend, but that went away a few years ago because of rising costs. There are meetups during the weekend for group photos, usually at the Mark Twain and at the carousel. The Royal Swing Ball is a bigger event than usual during DD Weekend.

A few questions... I am planning our first trip to DL, and was debating on April or May. I think dd and I would love Dapper Day, so I'm looking into those days now. I don't see any discount on the Disney site for that timeframe. I'm looking at April 18 to the 25. I tried only April 18 and 19 to see if that would show the discount, and it doesn't. And I tried through the Dapper Day site, and it only give me Disneyland Hotel.

Could be no more availability. Try and give them a call.

You can use this site to book as well, and if you mess around with it a little, you can see what dates are still available. (Specifically, after you enter your dates and other info and search for availability, then uncheck the "available room only" box. It will then show you which of your dates are available and which aren't.)

The discounted rate is still available for the nights of April 15-21 for GCH ($429/night) and the nights of April 15-22 for the DLH ($329/night).
