What causes your heartburn? After 47 years of being able to eat whatever I wanted without any issues, I just started getting heartburn. I did some reading, and I think I have the problem narrowed down to chocolate consumption. The other top causes aren't an issue for me. I don't eat right before going to bed. I don't eat much in the way of fatty or fried foods. As for caffeine, I don't drink carbonated drinks or tea, just a little coffee, not even a whole cup a day. I don't consume a lot of citrus because it gives me sores in my mouth when I do. I think the culprit is my favorite food, chocolate. In some for or another, I eat or drink it every day. I put chocolate chips in my oatmeal, my bear mush, pancakes, and waffles. I put cocoa in my coffee. I eat a half cup of ice cream most nights, and every flavor I eat includes chocolate.

It's going to be difficult, but I'm going to go chocolate-free for a week and see what happens.

Anyone else get heartburn from chocolate?

Yes! I just recently at the age of 44 started having an issue with it myself and within a few minutes of eating chocolate I can feel the burning in my throat. I felt like I had ulcers so I went to an ENT and she said it was acid reflux. She told me to cut out caffeine, chocolate and starchy foods.

I've never heard of it causing heartburn, but high quality dark chocolate makes me sneeze instantly.

I wonder if you would get heartburn if you chewed a few Tums before eating chocolate?

I've recently started having a problem with chocolate also. I enjoy a few other heartburn-causing foods, and have no problem with those, just chocolate.

Goodbye, chocolate :(, I hate that heartburn feeling.

My DD (31) has a problem with chocolate ....but only in the evenings.
Also Twizzlers, reheated pizza sauce, ginger, molasses

Oh yea. Chocolate or ice cream for that matter at night can do me in.

I love getting older, the list keeps growing....NOT! I ate a chocolate treat last night and woke up this morning with a sore throat from reflux & sinus drainage.

I don't get "heartburn", my feeling is chest pressure, acid in my throat and sinus drainage.

My list also includes....

Soda, coffee, lemon, tea, pepper, some herbs, beer, wine, milk, cinnamon, chili, tomato based stuff, citrus stuff, & other stuff which I can't think of I am sure.

I do have these things but it has to be in moderation and certainly not at night. Eating late in the evening in general will cause me reflux.

I do take a Nexium daily.

Chocolate has been known to cause heartburn. I get heartburn from it sometimes. As well as coffee. Caffeine is a killer.

I've had it for years and have several triggers. My strangest trigger? Peanut butter! I've never seen that on any list!:confused3

I started getting random heartburn a few years ago and then ended up getting an emergency cholecystectomy to have my gall bladder removed. DH started getting heartburn last August and in Nov ended up admitted to have his out, too. You might consider having a screening to see if you have gallstones. It's a nasty surprise to end up in the ER in that much pain!

Edited to add that gall bladder attacks are triggered by fatty foods. Chocolate has a fair amount of fat, and so does even a small serving of ice cream.

I get heartburn if I eat 4 hours or less before I go to sleep. My stomach has to be almost empty or I'll be reaching for meds in the middle of the night

Chocolate made me incredibly sick while I was pregnant with DD. I can't think of anything else that made me that sick.

All of this is very helpful. It does seem chocolate in the morning is not a problem. I have been thinking, in the back of my mind, to consider my gall bladder. I will keep alert for signs of gall bladder problems.

I got terrible heartburn on chocolate when I was pregnant. It got to the point where I couldn't even eat it in the end as the HB was totally unbearable. Luckily it hasn't affected me since.

I went through several years in my late 40's til I was about 51 where I would randomly get heartburn and gas pain in the evening. It kept me up at night about once a week. It just went away about 3 years ago and I haven't had an issue since. I chalked it up to hormones and entering menopause. I never did figure out what triggered it. Any number of foods can and I have read that chocolate is one of the top causes.

I get it from Peanut Butter too! Well, since I hit my 40's I get it from pretty much everything everyone has listed! I gave up coffee and soda for a month once to see if it would help and it did. However, as soon as the month was up I went right back it; I just can't get myself to give it up.

I, too, was thinking that gall bladder may be the issue.

Ah, the evil gall bladder. Mine is gone and my reflux symptoms really amped up after removal. So there you go. :badpc:

If you feel a soreness/pain right below your right rib cage that is your gallbladder.
