Okay, I write about 7 checks a month now, and about 30 debit card transactions. I'm running out of checkbook registers because I am writing fewer checks. Guess I'll have to call the bank and order registers only. Am I missing something? I have to write in debit purchases just like it was a check.
Those who never balance their check book need not reply. ;)

We've always been able to get check registers free from the bank. We just ask for one.

I've had that issue a lot with deposit slips, as well. Never are enough with the checks.

I'd check Office Max or the like first.

And be careful. I got majorly flamed for mentioning that I support recording transactions as you make them. (And that I still use checks.):confused3

I never use a debit card or balance my checkbook. I figure that let's me reply...LOL Can't you just follow your transactions online?

If you go into the bank, they usually give 'em to ya' for free!

Can you just keep a piece of paper in your checkbook to write your transactions on? (sorry, I don't "balance" my checkbook but I keep track online).

What about asking people at work if they have some they don't use?

Deposit slips--those were an issue but since I started making all my deposits via the ATM, don't need them any more. I can give you my extras :lmao:

I had the same concern, glad to see pp say they have been able to get them from the bank, I think I will ask next trip. With my old bank I had a small register-like booklet to record my debit transactions in but when I changed banks they did not have those and I like to record each transaction also.

I work at a bank and we give registers for free. And we also give pre-printed deposit slips for free too!

Slightly off topic--had to actually go into a bank to conduct a transaction (cashing in a savings bond that was 'matured"--and getting 4% interest ). I was telling DD about the old 'passbook savings' method of my childhood where you had your passbook and they WROTE IN your balance, and TRUSTED people that you wouldn't change things :scared1:.

Wondering if you have found a discrepancy? I do balance, but I do it electronically not on my register.

I write very few checks and usually not monthly. The only check I was writing was the doctor co-pays but now they take the card too.

A mention to the poster that spoke about not enough deposit slips - one of my banks recently did away with them!

Excel? I mean, Excel 2010 supports 115,000+ rows, so that's a lot of transactions you could keep recorded.

Granted I don't balance my checking account, but I know approximately how much is in there at any given time (+/- $100). We charge most of our transactions, I keep a mental track of how much I charge in a month (again +/- $100).

Well, yes, I can follow them online, but I need to record them and subtract them someplace so I know what my balance is. And transactions from some places can take days to show up.
I see Office Depot carrys them, but I check with the bank.

My husband stills writes everything down and balances monthly. He uses a regular budget type book, mainly because the check registers are too small for his writing and for her old eyes to see.

I have my own little fun money account and I don't write anything down for that one, I just follow my transactions on line. Not enough money in there on a month to month basis to really lose track of what's going on.

Yes, you can go into the bank, walk up to a teller and ask for them. I usually ask for three or four, as we have three checking accounts that we maintain.

Yes, I am old school and still write checks for most of my bills (been burnedbefore by automatic payemnts/auto-debts). I do check my balance/transactions online once or twice a week, but still record everythign I need to...also, sometimes my husband buys gas/gets lunch/etc and forgets to tell me/give me a receipt.

I had to get some registers last week in fact.

Yes, every few months I find a number transposed by me or my wife. Usually less than a dollar. I have found checks that were encoded incorrectly by the bank. I had one huge error with encoding.....someone at my insurance company's bank hit the number 1 twice, so instead of $110, they took $1,110 out of my account. At the time I banked with a small local bank, and did not have overdraft. The bank called me and said they were holding the check and could I come in and cover it today. In those days none of my bills were over $1,000, so I set down the phone, got my checkbook and asked what check number it was, and pointed out it was a check for $110. To which the bank manager replied "oh my god you're right...never mind"

I didn't read all the responses, but have you thought of using an excel document to balance it. DH set one up for me that has debit and credit columns and it balances it for me.

We write every transaction in our check register (checks and debit) and balance monthly and we've always just gone to the bank and asked for more registers. They give them for free. :)

I keep track of my balance on a computer program (quicken) so if I wrote a check (haven't in about 6 mos) I'd mark it down in the register until I got to my computer and then enter it there.

When I had a Mac, I had a really great application that did the math for me, so I didn't have to do it myself (I don't get along with numbers). I'm sure there are similar programs for Windows and Linux, and probably even the iPhone and Android.

But if you like paper, yes, just ask your bank for some blank registers. :)

I don't keep a check book register because I monitor all my transactions online. I log in every day and check my account to make sure that what I am suppose to have in there is what I have in there. If you keep up with it online, as you go, there is no need to balance a check book. Check book registers are kind of old school with online banking in full force now.
