Bright lights from neighbor's house

It seems like lighting up the outside of the house like it's a space ship is the thing to do now. I'm talking those bright, white construction lights all around the exterior of the house. We have a neighbor adjacent to us, backyard, who has 8 of them blaring at us. It started with one, but he's added more.

I have tried to grow trees in that location but they have died - not enough sunlight due to tall trees there. Luckily we have a jungle gym semi blocking that location and we have decided to put a tarp/roof over it, which should serve to block out their bright lights. We have evergreens blocking most of the rest.

Anyone else have to deal with this? And if you are the ones with the bright lights, don't those bother you from within the house? I couldn't take it. We have old fashioned porch lights (soft yellow, not the bright white kind) but only keep the front porch light on.

Next house we move to I'm getting at least an acre and no houses i can see from my property, due to trees squarely on my own property that cannot be cut down by neighbors. Lesson learned.

Yep. Our neighbor behind us has, basically, a 3ft long LED tube light mounted up outside his sliding door. It shines directly into our house, lighting up the entire downstairs like a helicopter search light. It's obnoxious. To make matters worse, our bedroom is on the rear of the house and they LOVE to turn this light on between 1 and 3am. We have plantation shutters, but when they turn this stupid thing on, it's basically enough light to read by. It wakes me up. I sleep with an eye mask now.

My new neighbors also installed little bright led puck lights in the soffits all around the house and one shines right into our bedroom window all night and it hits right through the holes where the strings are to pull up the window blinds. I hate black out curtains because I like to wake to the sun so I’ve had to strategically place a curtain to block it out every night.

I'm sorry and I completely feel your pain.

Are you going to suffer in silence or is there anything you plan to do? The plantation shutters were a good idea. For us we like to sit outside and are adding a patio so I'm I've given a lot of thought how to just block out this guy's house altogether and think roofing the jungle gym will do the trick once and for all.

A new house was built down the street and my neighbor next door to this house says it's like a spaceship - all lit up bright all along the side of the house. I think a lot of people have this problem now. I don't get it. I guess it's sold to them as part of a security system. I have dogs for that. Plus we live in an area that's as safe as can be.

There is nothing we can do. We are renters and the house is in a courtyard of sorts. It is literally like 15 feet behind our house. The shutters were put in by the landlord, and we don't want to add curtains (that looks stupid and it's too much effort, honestly).

These people belong to a culture that is known for being loud and boisterous and not really caring about how loud and annoying they are to their neighbors. I tried to speak to them about it and they feigned an inability to speak English. We can only hope that they move out soon. We know they are renting the house, so we shouldn't have to put up with it forever.

I suppose we could report them to the HOA. They are supposed to have approval for any light fixtures added onto the outside of the structure. If they start using the light nightly, that's the path I will go down next. It's sporadic for now.

Yeah. Neighbor installed motion flood lights and cameras. Honestly this is one of the reasons why we're looking into mid rise condos or townhomes in the future. Actually excited to going back to apartment living for a bit.

Most people in our area have motion lights. While they are bright, they are usually only on for less than a minute at a time. I would hate to have continuous bright lights shining into my home.

Black out curtains should handle the problem.

Wrong I have all glass windows, large, no curtains or drapes in the back room of our house and we like to be outside in our backyard. That is not the way to get away from 8 bright construction lights. The only thing that will block them year round are evergreens (we've planted some) and tarping our jungle gym, which we plan to do. The funny thing is my youngest has outgrown that jungle gym and we were going to get rid of it but now we will keep it indefinitely as a blockade against the construction site that is our neighbor's behind us.

Sounds like the people across the street from us. We live on the last street in our neighborhood and the offender lives across the street in a gated community with a security guard so we have no way to politely try to talk to them. Ive been tempted to buy one of those high powered flashlights and point it in their house when they have their lights on.

i'm confused. Curtains won't work because you....have no curtains? I worked graveyard shift for 25 years, slept during the day, and good curtains were a godsend.

There's some kind of green laser you can get that will shut off the light supposedly but that's no solution permanently. It really sucks but it is a real consideration when moving anywhere. Just because someone doesn't have that problem now, doesn't mean their neighbors won't decide to light up their house in the future. I didn't have to deal with this before because of trees and the lights just weren't there. Little by little, neighbor's trees came down, lights went up.

My in laws have a lake house and even they are dealing with their neighbors having put up a light post with a halogen light! It beams down on their property at night. smh.

I have tall floor to ceiling windows that i"m not about to get curtains for. It's not the look of the house and why should I when I already have a solution that doesn't entail adding curtains! Thanks for the input though.

The purpose of the post was to ask if anyone else has this problem and if someone lights up their house, doesn't it bother them. Not to solicit advice on how to handle it.

My husband just recently installed bright lights on our 2 side yards. They are to help the blink cameras catch motion at night. We tried motion activated first, but it just didn’t work.

We looked at the lights after installation and determined they would be too bright for our neighbors on either side of us. Since we really like both our neighbors, my husband fixed the lights so that they are half as bright as they should be. We can still see movement on the cameras and our neighbors are happy.

Okay, this is what the neighbors probably have as well.

For me neighbors being able to see in would bother me more. If the light is getting in, they can see in. But I'm big on privacy.

It's the back of our house and they cannot see in. There's quite a bit of distance there, it's angled, it's not a straight shot, there's lots of trees, a lot more going on than you can visualize. This is why I didn't ask for advice how to handle it. No way of someone knowing the situation and the replies get off topic.
