Does anyone else's 5 or 6 year old play t ball who can tell me what gear they wear? I'm told my daughter will need a batting helmet, and I am confused as to why. Do those kids throw the ball THAT hard? Do they wear it the entire time they play? No one is pitching, so I am confused.

Thank you!

If you have seen a 5 or 6 yo swing a bat - yep she needs a helmet.

I coached T through majors in MA and not only a helmet but face cage was mandatory in our league.

They wear it while batting and running bases.

I think when you have wee ones, the opportunity for a wild ball or a bounced ball or anything can hit your kid in the head. Also, if they have bats, are not the wee ones swinging? The helmet would protect against that, too.

Yes all my boys played tee ball. They range in age from 22-8 and they all had to wear helmets. It's for safety.

In our league, my son needed a batting helmet with a face mask for the 5 year old t-ball. He plays on the6 year old team this year, and needs a helmet with a chinstrap. The 6 year olds get 3 balls pitched and then go to the tee.

our dd's 5 and 7 play mod t....they are on the same team (probably should not be), most of the kids are 8, BUT they have to have a batting helmet on if they have a bat in their hands. The bat would probably do the most damage. The girls pitch - and even at 7-8 they are throwing hard...not sure what ball you guys use, but ours is a hard hard ball and even during warm ups if the girls are not looking and get nailed, it hurts!

Wow! Thank you for the fast responses. So, is this list accurate for what I'll need?

- Cleats
- helmet with cage
- baseball pants

Where my sons play baseball (they are 6 and 8) they also suggest a chest protector. Most people have one that is just like a white nylon tank top with a piece of foam like material on the chest. If you have a Models or another sporting goods store near you they should carry all of this stuff. Other than that, your list looks complete. Good luck.

We get pants with our uniform. I would check before you buy them. In addition to your list, most kids have their own bat, bag and , obviously, glove.

I'm just going to dress her in one of these

you shouldnt need to provide a helmet, the league should provide 4 or 5 per team.

Thank you soooo much for all of your pointers!

I was out catching and hitting with her today. I have to admit we haven't worked with her up until now. I hope she's not too far behind. If anyone can suggest some good coaching techniques or things to do to get her up to speed that would be great! I have an 18 month old that keeps us from playing a real game outside on a regular basis.

They do. However, one of the moms told me to bring my own because of LICE!

She should only need a batting helmet. My kids never had to wear the one with the mask over the front unless they were catching. In that case there was a team helmet and all the catchers equipment they had to wear.

I wouldn't invest in a whole lot of stuff until your kid knows she wants to stick with it.

I bought DD's helmet at Wal-Mart. It was $10.00. Same with her glove. $10.00. Cleats at Dicks, they were $20.00, but she can wear them for soccer and softball.

Bats can be pricey. The coach should have extra bats. And check before you buy any of the uniform. We have to buy pants , but get socks, a shirt and a hat.

Plus all the kids have water bottles too.

Holy carp! There is so much they need now just for t ball! I remember playing 5th grade slow pitch and just showing up with my mitt. They gave me a t shirt and visor and I was good to go!

I know this is going to sound totally over protective but if you can find a face cage that's small enough get it and make her wear it.

Last summer my son got hit in the eye with a thrown ball and ended up with a blood clot in the eye. He was on bed rest for a week to avoid a re-hemorrhage and we were in and out of the opthamalogist for months. He still has to go every few months now and has a risk of early onset glaucoma for life. The sound of a ball hitting your kids face is one you never want to hear.

DS played T-ball last year and we had to provide the pants, glove and cleats. They gave the shirt, socks and cap. The league provided batting helmets, but we ended up buying DS his own. The majority of the kids on the team had their own.

As for the cleats, DS just wore his soccer cleats since we already had them. He could wear his soccer cleats for T-ball but could not wear baseball cleats for soccer because of that front cleat on baseball cleats.

I think I would be more concerned that you wouldn't want your child wearing a helmet. My Ds at the age of 7 got pulled up to minors in the begining of his coach pitch season and his fourth game into minors got hit in the mouth with a fast pitch. Needlessss to say I am waiting for the rest of his baby teeth to fall out just so he can have braces. He now wears a face gaurd on his helmet. won;t play with out one!!

also...most people buy their own because of head lice...FYI
