We got a mini-doughnut maker from relatives for Christmas last year. I've used it 10 times or so, pretty much using the same recipe. I do not want to buy the doughnut mix box to use with this maker, because it's not wort the extra money to spend on it.

If you have an electric, mini doughnut maker (like the kind sold at Kohl's or Macy's) last year and this year...what do you use?

Do you use cake mix? Are there any quick mixes to whip up for it that are easy and cheap, but tastey?

Someone told me to try and use the cheap fridge biscuts, just cut them up into 5 or 6 chunks and put them in there and use powdered sugar when they come out. They THOUGHT it would be a good idea, but they had never tried it.

I, myself, have used a recipe and made them from scratch- but I don't know if it's really worth it. Just curious to see how others do it...

I use the brownie mix in the box and leave them in for 4 minutes. They come out awesome and you can buy the mix for $1 or less when it goes on sale at the supermarket. You can also use a muffin mix. I've had success with blueberry and chocolate chip. Cake mixes work well too but you have to cut down on the water you put in the mix. If the mix is not on the thick side, it takes longer to cook and does not set up like a donut.

There is nothing better than a warm, tasty treat in 4 minutes! :thumbsup2 Good luck!

My son got the one from Kohls for Christmas last year because he loves donuts. He uses boxed cake mix and it works great for us using the normal amount of water and taking them out when the light turns green. The one thing we do change is substitute 1/8 cup of apple sauce for the oil. I am going to tell him to try brownie mix at some point too.

Can I tell you I am like Alton Brown and hate those single use appliances? If I have an appliance I want it to do more than one thing. But anyway......

googled and found this

Yeah, I really don't like them either. But, this one was a gift. My MIL opened it up and used it already with my kids and some cousins. I couldn't return it. It doesn't take up too much space, so it's not the worst single use appliance around.

Thanks! I will try the brownie and cake mixes. I've got a few of those. I also like using applesauce instead of oil! No taste difference in the finished product and it's a LITTLE bit healthier! Any little bit counts.
