Anyone Use Misfits Market or Other "Ugly Produce" Subscription?

I just got my first Misfits Market box this week and I'm pretty pleased. It's a subscription based service that offers organically grown produce that is either imperfect or there is an overabundance of. It's much like the meal box subscriptions where you can have one shipped weekly or choose to get boxes only when you want them. You do have the opportunity to select what you want in your box from what is available and you also can add additional items to your box at an upcharge which include more produce, grocery and kitchen wares.

I am generally pleased with what I got. My box was for 1-2 people, but there is also a bigger box you can get. My box is advertised to have at least 12 different types of items. Some things I got a couple of, others I just got one. I also ordered some of the extras. I liked the variety. I liked that I didn't have to go to the store. I got things I wouldn't normally get and was able to get things like onions, lettuce and limes that I would buy anyway. Yup, some of it is ugly. Mostly misshapen and just not pretty, but everything so far has tasted excellent. My only complaints would be that they did forget one of my add-on items and portion of lettuce I got was really teeny tiny, like a bit shy of having enough for a single salad. They did credit back the missing item and did a small credit for the lettuce.

We have also been using Misfits Market since about April or so. Every other week, although we skip a shipment or two every now and then. I’ve been pretty pleased with them as well. It somewhat forces us to try vegetables we wouldn’t normally buy at the store.

I did use it but didn't care for it. I received about 10 boxes and they were for 1-2 people. I now have over 3 pounds of fresh ginger. I found I could buy what was included at Fresh Thyme staying organic for about 75% of what Misfits charged. I had a few boxes delayed and 1 that didn't show up. They did replace it. Last box had 3 apples,4 baby potatoes, 1 onion, 1 bunch of greens, 2 fresh gingers, 8 lemons and 1 beet. I kept waiting it out but it didn't get better. I do have enough finger in my freezer to last years.

I tried Imperfect Produce a few years ago and ended up cancelling. I discovered that I'm too particular about my produce and need to pick it out myself. I would customize my box and still end up with lots of substitutions that I couldn't use. For example, they sent me a lot of really small potatoes. I tend to like bigger potatoes that can be baked. I love large Fuji apples, but they sent me small apples of some other variety that were kind of sour. I chose lots of specific greens for my bunny. I would ask for Italian parsley and they would substitute regular. Bunny doesn't like regular parsley and I don't use it, so I was stuck with something I didn't need. I also found that the parsley was often wilted by the time it reached me. Bunny doesn't like wilted greens. Seriously, it's all about pleasing the bunny. I decided I was better off choosing my own produce at the grocery store.

I got 3 fuji's with my Misfit's order and they were the best apples I've ever had.

That doesn't sound all that great. I wish I had better access to stores like that. I live in a small city in the middle of nowhere and regular produce is expensive and organic is super expensive so it seems like a deal to me. I planned 5 meals off my first box so that seemed pretty good. There was also a decent mix of things that had to be consumed right away and things that could be stored so I haven't lost anything to spoilage.

I did it in the spring for 3 months, when I didn't want to go to the grocery, and yet I wanted any fresh produce I could get delivered. For that, it was worth it.

But for regular times, it had no value for me. I shop cheaper, for better and fresher produce, than I could ever get in the box. It's really only something I'd use when I was "shut in" again.

I did Imperfect Produce for a couple months at the start of our lockdown in March. I liked some things about it--the occasional oddball produce (LOVED cherry bomb peppers, which I ended up pickling). But there were too many mistakes and some servings were just too small. Eggs were almost always broken, though they did give me extra later. My local restaurant produce supply company started serving retail customers, and for the same price, I could get a huge amount of much higher quality veggies loaded into my car, so we switched to that for a while. But now we are back to regular shopping.
