I was wondering how much it really costs to have your closet customized/organized (creating shelves, sections, etc.) I'm sure the price varies considerably based on the materials you select ex: cherry vs. melamine, but is there any type of ballpark figure, perhaps per square foot?
Thanks anyone!

I have used California Closets and had them create a built in work station in an area I once had a typical closet (with two sliding doors) in. The closet doors were removed, and I now have a white (melamine?) work station that is about 6 1/2 feet wide. On the left side is a bottom filing drawer, an open area for my TV, electronics, and above the TV opening are shelves with doors that house my printer. I then have a desk with top and grommets, keyboard tray, and to the left three drawers. Above the desk I have a combination of open shelving and shelves with doors. I paid a bit over $3K for it, and that was at least five years ago. I am happy with my system, and thought California Closets was a good company to work with.

I was never given a per sq ft price when I did my research before installing my system. I had some unusual issues to deal with, such as a sloped ceiling on one side of the system, and a brick chimney on the other. I imagine companies factor all those kinds of things in when determining the project cost.

My parents have California closet systems in every closet, their pantry and even their garage. I think they dropped over $20K for it all.

The cost for closet systems really varies widely depending on what you want and what materials are used. I would get bids from several companies, and then decide who you are most comfortable with.

We are undergoing a major home renovation right now and my general contractor used to have a custom closet company, where he installed more high end closets using more costly wood components. I know when I am ready to have the rest of my closets done, I will be giving him a call to do my closets as he still has lots of material and has the expertise to do it.

Along the same topic, does anyone have any suggestions or examples of how a closet can be "made over"if it is a typical older house closet (small square closet with one door)? I can't seem to find any examples.

i bought my own from homedepot, not sure of the brand, the higher end one, but the ones you install yourself. paid about $700 total for a big walk-in closet done in dark wood. best part, i built it all myself with some help from my daughter! i'd be willing to send a pic if you're interested.

We used California Closets for 2 closets. I can't give you a price, but I can tell you I am grateful we did it every time I go into the closet.
Our house is 101 years old and has those old closets with 1 regular door. Plus we have a dormer-ed ceiling that slopes in the closet. So you open the door and the closet extended to the right of the door. You can kind of 'walk into' the closet (just enough to get your body in, not enough to take a nap in there). Here is how ours is laid out. Open door, double hang (pants/skirts up top, shirts on bottom), next to that is open shelves - larger on top for sweaters, smaller on bottom for shoes, then it turns to the exterior/sloped wall with a single hang and a small box shelf (so you can out stuff on the shelf and on top of it).

HTH.

I bought the elfa system from the container store when they have their yearly sale- I did 3 closets. (I think the average closet was around $600. I had to put it in myself but it was super easy. They design a system for you based on what you want for FREE. _ Then you buy the stuff. (it was 30% off at the sale I think it is only once a year might be twice) And they are great systems.

I did three closets with a local company similar to Calif closets. My son and daughter got the white melamie and I got cherry.
Best money I ever spent. I still get a thrill a year later every time I walk into my closet. It doubled my space, looks great and my closets have never been so organized..... Now if only they could do the whole house...
I spent $3500 and got several estimates. All them seemed to negotiate the prices as well. I would go local instead of franchise.

We redid our Master BR closet this winter. We did it in a cherry laminate from Expo Design. I did the design online, and it is wonderful! Our closet was a dumping ground before, and now it is neat and organized each and every day! I told DH I now need a new wardrobe to match the beautiful closet! (ha ha!) One thing we did is we got rid of a TON of clothes in the process, and vowed to only use as many hangers as we have now....so if something comes in, something needs to go to the donation pile.

We put a ton of drawers in the new closet, so we fold a lot of things we used to hang. LOVE OUR NEW CLOSET!!

We are going to be doing our MBR closet soon and I have looked at getting the closet systems on Overstock.com. The prices seem to be great compared to what I have seen elsewhere and the reviews are good too. But they don't have any drawer systems-just hanging and shelves.

Oh yes - A picture would be great!

We are putting a bid on a house this week (cross fingers that all goes well!) and if it all works out there is one large closet in the mbr. DH & I have never shared a closet before. :scared1: It kinds of freaks me out. I am really interested in seeing what we can do to make the most of the space. It has great potential, and is roughly 16' X 7'.

I would also just check with some area builders. My husband is a builder, and of course is slow right now so he has been staying busy with odd jobs. He did a project for some former neighbors that required turning a small bedroom into a master closet. Materials were bought at a local store similar to a Home Depot. It turned out absolutely wonderful - even a center island. They picked all the options they wanted (shoe racks, drawers, shelves, etc). All this and they got quite a deal because he needed the work!

24 years ago I installed a wire closet system from Home Depot (did it myself). It works fine (and still does) as our 2ndary closet; however, I am glad that I don't have that system in my MBR as sometimes the hangers don't slide as easily on the wire rack. (There's a lot to be said for the more upscale models besides look... think ease of use!)

Now looking at Creative Closets in PA as a possibility for redoing my workshop/laundry room. Not sure I can afford anything mroe than a consultation though!

If anyone has any recent price/sq. ft., I'd be interested in reading your post! :surfweb:
