My DD-26 is looking to move 922 miles away from her current location. She is in a small 1 Bedroom apartment (no dining room). Anyone have any cost estimates if using full moving company to load/unload into their truck and drive/deliver it? ANd also any idea of cost of her renting a Uhaul, hiring 2 guys to load it, driving ourselves (cost of gas) and hiring 2 guys to unload it? Her last move from an apartment a town over from the current place she did the Uhaul and hiring of 2 guys for the day. It was like $500-600 total. But this would be driving long distance, paying for gas, having the rental for like 3-4 days and having guys load on each end (not just same guys all in a day). Trying to determine if it would be cheaper for her to sell her furniture and then rebuy when she gets to new place.

I would just call for estimates on hiring out, so many variables would make her cost completely different from someone else.

And then calculate the cost online of the rental truck with your specific parameters. It does make a difference where you pick up and drop off as to the charges.

Last summer we paid approximately $10,000 for just over 1,200 miles -- three full bedrooms, dining room, living room, and basement. We boxed everything, but the movers wrapped up all of the furniture.

As you noted, if she can fit it in a rental truck and someone is willing to drive, it's likely to be cheaper to pay to have movers pack at the origin and unpack at the destination -- we used to do that when we were young.

She can probably get online quotes based on the amount of estimated furniture and boxes. DD did sell stuff the last time she moved and used FB Marketplace to re-outfit her apartment.

Yes. Moved out of a 1-bedroom apartment last year from Massachusetts to Texas. It ain't cheap. Moving company is likley $5k to $10k. One option might be Pods where you move belongings into the Pod and they stack along with other Pods to move.

I ended up selling my furniture and stuff. Packed a few suitcases and paid baggage fees. US Postal mailed some items in their large box (50-pound weight limit) for $21.90.

Unless you have some high-end bulky valuable stuff, it's cheaper to start over when you arrive.

Good luck...

My son has moved recently and opted to move using one of those PODS that they drop off, you pack it up yourself, and then they come and get it and take it to your location. One of the things that he discovered is that it is sometimes/oftentimes cheaper to just sell/donate your items on one side and then purchase new when you arrive. It might make sense to pay to move a family heirloom, or irreplaceable items, but not worth it to pay for hauling bulky or heavy items like dishes, toilet plungers, or printers, that you can purchase for less than the cost per pound to move the same items. If you do go the POD route, it is definitely worth it to purchase all of your moving boxes (or find some on FB Marketplace or whatever). Actual moving boxes, as opposed to random grocery store boxes, stack very nicely in the pods. The firmer you can pack things, the less shifting there will be, which prevents damage. You may also need some tie straps to hold things in place, as an extra security measure.

Whoa those prices people are sharing are steep. We moved 2 queen beds, a dining room table + 12 chairs (taken apart) and most of a house 400 miles and did most of the packing ourselves with a small amount of help for cash we found on NextDoor, maybe $1200 total but it costs time to pay less. The biggest expense is labor in being unprepared and having workers do it for you or to wait for you to get organized.

Pack ahead of time, which I did slowly doing 5 boxes a day - writing with marker what was in the box and lining the perimeter of the place with boxes which I only sealed the day before leaving. From Amazon medium moving boxes with handles pack of 20 - 18"X14"X12" - Cheap Cheap Moving Boxes.

Throw things out as you go along, throw a lot out so you aren't paying for junk removal.

Uhaul town to city was around $400, I would suggest you do not pick any time around college move in or move out or you'll pay much more if you ever get the vehicle, they will cancel without notice if the truck is late. I wanted a van but they seem to keep these in town so I got a medium truck. Reserve it ASAP, cancellation was free for us so I booked a few that I canceled when I was sure there would be no storms.

We got the truck for a few days extra in case of bad weather. Day 1 we packed it, morning of Day 2 we packed it and scheduled help for late in the day - $200 cash for NextDoor workers. Day 3 we drove, or I should I say I drove because the seats are tough on a bad back and my back is better than DH so he followed in the car for safety, he stayed behind and if I turned on my blinker he got over first and gave me room. It wasn't too bad but I needed a pillow to see the mirrors properly since they don't move up and down so be warned if you and DD are not tall. For 900 miles I might spend the night somewhere because you can't drive fast in these things- have a lock for the uhaul. We kept the vehicle the day after getting there to have wiggle room. Day after driving we unpacked in the morning and had help late in the day after we were done for $400, this was more expensive in the city area.

I kept furniture because it was expensive and I had a lot of stuff to move in boxes anyway. If DD can drive back and forth a few times to a storage locker in her new town with a car full of boxes she can probably sell the big furniture and avoid some of the costs and annoyances of a big move, including the stress. Many storage places have great intro deals so she can get stuff to the new town ahead of the move in date then move her things into her new place slowly. Just know when picking a place read reviews for reports of vermin, I looked at a few and some were disgusting while some were spotless... the reviews will tell you.

So, her apt complex is a no-go for a pod. And she will pack herself. I've moved a dozen times or more and have done all the options and long distance. And like 8-12K is not abnormal. We even tried pods, but had to store for a couple months, and that too was up to like 8-9K. But, we are a 3-4 BR home. So I was wondering how a 1BR would be.

UHaul charges 99 cents per mile not counting the per day charge, so with tax a two day rental driving 400 miles would be at least $500.

We rented a truck locally yesterday and mileage was $1.29 per mile. OP, you should be able to go to UHaul.com and get a reasonable estimate of the costs. If she doesn't have expensive/quality 'stuff' it might be cheaper to just replace it when she gets where she's going.

At 922 miles thats almost $1200. I don't think her stuff is worth that much so it seems she will probably sell it and start over in new town

if she can't sell some of her larger/bulkier items you might check with her apartment complex to see if they know of any charities that do pickup (they do around us to keep residents from dumping large items near their dumpsters).

If you are driving your own Uhaul, be sure to check on the height restrictions across your entire journey. I learned the hard way driving a Uhaul through New York.

For a small move, if you can keep control of the stuff, it's better. It's one thing we lucked out on, but the people the day before didn't.

We used a large moving company (Atlas). They picked up on the day it was scheduled and we gave the day after the close to deliver. They said it could be anywhere up to a couple of MONTHS for us to get our stuff. Fortunately, it was only an extra day late, but the movers told us the people they'd delivered to the day before had waited over two months for their stuff. I can't even imagine. Apparently they wait until they have a full truckload before going to a location.

In the same state or is it an interstate move? That makes a huge difference in what kinds of companies can even work with you legally. If it's interstate, they have to have a lot of permits, registrations, insurances etc. That just aren't necessary for in state moves.
