I was wondering if it really helps you to fall asleep and do you wake ok? Is it safe to use?

It's just Tylenol and benadryl combined

I must be in the minority, it doesn't do crap for me. :confused3

Yes, it has helped me fall asleep. It was recommended by my pharmacist when an antibiotic I was on was keeping me up ALL night. And I woke up just fine the next day.

It helps me fall asleep very quickly but I wake up feeling kind of groggy.

I've taken it; it's very safe. However, only take it if you can sleep in the next day. It really knocks you out.

It is great if you don't have to get up in the morning. It really knocks you out cold.

I use Tylenol Simply sleep...instead of the Tylenol PM since I don't need the pain reliever part....just the falling alseep part...as long as I take them about 6-7 hours before I plan to wake up it is just fine....I take FOREVER to fall asleep and I think these REALLY work!!!!

They really knock me out. I only take one if I know I'm going to get a good night's sleep. I think I'd be groggy if it didn't have time to wear off.

I am currently pregnant and the past couple of weeks I have had a terrible time sleeping at night. My nurse practitioner recommended taking Tylenol PM. I finally caved and took it 2 nights ago as well as last night. The first night it knocked me out about an hour after I took it and I slept for about 3 hours. Then, I woke up and was wide awake...not groggy at all. I had a hard time falling back to sleep. Last night I took it and it knocked me out in about 30 min. Once again I slept for about 3 hours before waking up and feeling wide awake. This time I took a 2nd dose so I could sleep. I slept the rest of the night after that. I don't know that it is the best medicine to take if you can't sleep, but it is the only safe medicine I can take while preg. to help me sleep. It does help tremendously with the leg cramps and ligament pain I have been getting at night though. I haven't had any pain since taking the Tylenol PM. Anyway, that is my exp. with it.

I work midnights and sometimes I have trouble sleeping so I use those on several occassions. They work good, but sometimes you wake up groggy. Also, they make the sleep aid without the pain reliever.

Again...save yourselves some cash and buy some generic Benadryl if all you need is a sleep aid.

MScott851,

The sleep aid in tylenol pm is not what is in Benadryl. If you have high blood pressure like I do - you are advised to stay away from Benadryl. If you want to stick with a sleep aid and no pain reliver you can stick with the drugstore sleep aid which is the same thing that is in Tylenol pm without the pain reliver and save some cash also.

I hate to have to do this, but your information is just a smidge wrong, and I have to correct it.

Diphenhydramine is, in fact, Benadryl. The active ingredients in Tylenol PM are acetominophen 500mg AND diphenhydramine 25mg.

I promise, and so do all the nurses and doctors I work with. We have a PDR right here and are not afraid to use it. :goodvibes

For those of you who don't:

Now, Tylenol Simply Sleep is ONLY diphenhydramine 25mg, which, is in fact, Bendryl:

Sorry. If anyone has any underlying health problems, they might want to reseach this a little and talk to your doctor if you are concerned about drug interactions or side effects. BE INFORMED! You are your own best patient advocate!!! :goodvibes

Thanks for schooling me. I must be getting it confused with another medication. I have high blood pressure and I thought it was bnedryl, but it must be something else.

Even at 40 you learn something new every day.

I hated to do it...I know what you are talking about. Decongestants...but even I'm not familiar with which one.

It's just I feel very strongly about patient education. I feel that most doctors and nurses don't do a good job of it, and if we did, a lot of patient's apprehensions and concerns would be alleviated.

I agree. I would only buy something like Benadryl as a sleeping aid. I buy the Tylenol PM though b/c it does have a pain reliever in it and it seems to work for my sore legs and ligament pain that I have been experiencing lately, as well as help me to sleep a little better. But all it is is Tylenol and Benadryl if I am not mistaken.

I haven't taken one in over a year, but sometimes I really couldn't sleep at all. The trick seems to be to take JUST ONE!!! It will get you to sleep, but you won't feel too groggy in the morning.

I have used it when desperate and it did help me sleep, but it made me feel like crud the next day. But I seem to be sensitive to medication (my stomach and head) so I may not be the best to ask....

My moms Dr told her after she told him she was using tylenol PL to sleep that she shouldn't use that since she was just looking for sleep, not pain relief...they told her to just get simply sleep or any over the counter sleep aid rather than using tylenol when she didn't need it. Now she has moved on to Ambien and is doing fine with that, she has never been able to sleep well since I was a baby but that is really helping her, she gets 8 hours and doesn't wake up groggy.

I took it in order to fall asleep during a difficult time at work when they were switching our schedules like crazy. Unfortunately, for a small % of people, it actually has the reverse effect. After 2 nights of not sleeping at all, I figured out that the Tylenol PM was what was keeping me awake, LOL!
