Hello .... kind of worrying as I just made a trifle for dinner tomorrow night. My aunt and uncle are coming up to my parents' house and I am bringing dessert. I offered to make my raspberry cheesecake trifle. So I used some light cool whip from my freezer to put along the bottom of the trifle bowl (about a third of a cup maybe) ... then I needed a bit more cool whip in the cheesecake part of the mix, so I used maybe a quarter of a cup. Of course then I'm putting it into the fridge (to keep to use again) and I notice a date on the bottom!!!! :scared1: It says October 08!!!! Man oh man ... did I totally poison my whole dish??????? Doesn't Cool Whip NEVER expire? Apparently maybe I was wrong? I did lick the spoon after (and maybe stuck a finger in after I finished ;)) ... and I am feeling fine right now, although I could make myself sick if I keep worrying!

Just tell me that I won't poison the whole lot of them with my possibly expired cool whip!!!!!!!

Thanks ...
Kerri

I wouldn't worry about it, I think that stuff is probably so full of preservatives you could use it years after its expiration date! :rotfl:

If you had it frozen I'd feel pretty confident that it's ok. (If, however, you end up in the bathroom all night, you might want to reconsider!;))

By the way, that dessert sounds delicious!

ETA: Did a quick google and found a food storage site that says you can keep cool whip in the freezer up to 14 months! It's only water, corn syrup, shortening, and chemicals.

Thank you ... I tried searching too, but found nothing!

Here's hoping it is ok ... with the raspberries, pound cakes, and cream cheese, it is too expensive to just whip up all over again!!!!

Usually dates on frozen/dairy are sell by dates..so if it's been in the freezer since then I wouldn't worry.

As long as it didn't have all kinds of crystals or that slime that ice cream gets when it is in the freezer too long I'm good with using stuff.

I think it was fine. I have had Cool Whip go bad before - and when it does, you know it. :lmao:

Cool Whip is mostly whipped hydrogenated oil and HFCS. It will be fine.

I don't think anyone will get sick. I don't believe frozen Cool-Whip goes bad/rancid in the way that, say, a steak or chicken would. I think the chemicals just degrade after a certain amount of time and maybe the consistency just starts to change.

Sounds great!!! I wouldn't worry about it...
However, when I hear someone talk about making a trifle, I immediately have flashbacks of a FRIENDS episode where Rachel makes one with Hamburger, potatoes and fruit, etc... Love that episode! :lmao:

That is scarier than the thought of it going bad. :scared::scared:

OP, I think you need to eat the rest of the tub and see what happens before tomorrow.

First, rummage in the back of your freezer and find a container of expired Cool Whip....;)

:rotfl: I'm sure I have that! I'd think it would last a LONG time in the freezer, but I've accidently left some in the fridge for a couple of weeks and that wasn't pretty!

I'm kind of scared of Cool Whip before it expires, so I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have eaten this particular trifle. :rotfl: I'd love the recipe, though.

I'll use whipped cream instead of Cool Whip.

I made whipped cream from scratch last night (for strawberry shortcake), and it was awesome. It's just cream, confectioner's sugar and vanilla -- couldn't be easier. Next time I'm going to try it with Splenda and see if it comes out OK. I don't think I'll ever buy cool whip again.

Real whipped cream doesn't always work well in recipes, though. Cool Whip is usually better.
