So, for the first surgery, the downstairs apartment wasn't available because we had a tenant there. so, I got upstairs on my butt and mostly stayed up there because I am too out of shape to stand up once I got to the top of the staircase. I had my husband and son lift me into the standing position so I could use crutches. Also, the shower situation isn't the best.
But, the real answer is that downstairs is the absolute perfect solution. It is a handicapped accessible apartment with a roll in shower with a shower wand and large enough for my shower seat. I can even do laundry pretty easily and when I go back to work, I can use the handicapped ramp with my knee
scooter. There is a door connecting the apartment to the house so I can easily spend time with the family without traversing the stairs.
