Sorry about the confusing wording. Two of my credit cards offer 5% cashback at restaurants. Clearly, Disney will be an excellent place to make use of this bonus.

Since I'm mostly wearing sundresses this trip instead of my usual multi-pocket shorts I thought about actually using the magic band for charges.

Does anyone know if the charges will still be broken down into categories so I would still receive my 5% cash back when using the magic band?

If I don't get the 5% cash back then I won't load it. I will be carrying a small purse. Most of my charges would be restaurant charges.

TIA!

No. You would have to actually use the CC at the restaurant to get the 5% back. Any charges made with the MB will be put thru as a single charge by the resort, either at the end of your stay or when you meet the preset spending limit for guests at that resort.

I looked at my CC reward for 5% Restaurants and there was a list of Chains Restaurants that seemed to qualify for the 5% extra, not sure if all restaurants qualify or not?
I will be Using my Disney Visa Rewards CC for an Extra 10% on a few Restaurants at Disney (some at Epcot and at Disney Resorts).

Not sure which CC with 5% you are talking about, but with Chase Freedom it is all restaurants. There is a winery near me that does not code as a restaurant when we go there for dinner, but the others have worked.

I am traveling to WDW and Universal this month and think I will just go with the gift cards I get from my grocery store with fuel perks, because sometimes I have trouble getting the 5% there (and I get 6% back on grocery store purchases)

Thanks for your responses!
It is the Chase Freedom. I'm pretty sure the 5%at restaurants will work if I use the card directly but not so sure if I use it for the magic band. I know for one of my cards I couple of years ago it had a 5% for them parks and I learned that it didn't count for tickets from Undercover Tourist or anything I purchased at a park to eat or take home as a souvenir. I think I'll just use the card directly to be safe.

Thank you! That clears it up perfectly. Definitely going to go the direct route :)

Agree it will not work because ALL magic band charges will code as travel as they are ultimately processed through the hotel.

I would think you'd do better buying discounted Disney GCs and paying with those over the 5% Freedom?

It depends on how much of a discount you can get on the gift cards, and if you can transfer that 5% back into Ultimate Rewards points and how you value those. I stopped buying discounted gift cards when I found out the Chase Freedom 5% category for Q3 was going to be restaurants; I'm saving my UR points to put towards a cruise so 5X UR points on all my restaurant spend at Disney is more valuable to me than the discount I can get buying GCs.

Most places you can get a minimum of 5% off GCs - Target redcard is 5% off Disney GCs or buying Target GCs at a discount with a cash back credit card can be more. Sam's and BJ's are 5% off plus any cash back eligible cards. I would think you'd be better off that way than the 5x UR?

Possibly, it depends on the total % discount you can get on GCs and how you value UR points. I value UR points at 1.5 cents per point, because I have a CSR that I can transfer them to and redeem through the Chase travel portal at that rate. I'd have to get over a 7.5% discount on GCs to get more value out of that than the 5X UR. Plus I can use UR points for destinations other than just Disney.

I didn't realize the UR was worth 1.5! In that case then, makes sense!

All Chase Freedom cards give you a 5% discount at all TS and CS in WDW?

It's not a 5% discount at point of sale; it's a 5% credit that you can redeem for cash back or gift cards, or convert into Ultimate Rewards points if you have a UR-earning card like the Sapphire Preferred or Sapphire Reserve.
