Where do you buy furniture?

It's time to replace our living room furniture. We want to buy a reclining sofa but I have no idea where to shop. There aren't a lot of options in our local area but we live an hour or so away from a few major cities on the East coast. I am not against shopping online either.

Can I get some suggestions?

I need to replace my family room furniture when all this pandemic stuff is over. I'm going to go to La-Z-Boy first. Their furniture seems to be well made without being overly expensive. If I needed just one piece, like a dresser or a single chair, I would check out the my local antique stores. Older furniture is very well made and will last forever.

My last furniture purchase was a couch and love seat, I have tons of options here and got them from Macy’s, not expensive at all.

I'm the opposite - I have no desire for furniture that will last forever. I like to change it up once in a while when I redecorate or when we move, so "investment pieces" are out. There are several national furniture chains here that carry reasonably-priced, fashionable merchandise and every set we've had has come from one of them. We've been married 25 years and are on our 4th set of living room furniture. Prices change over time but our current couch and love seat cost $1,200 for the set.

I'm getting the itch to freshen things up again as it's been 6 years and decor trends have really changed. We always pass our outgoing stuff down to friends or family. Our one and only set of (expensive) La-Z-Boy motion furniture was purchased in 2006 and used by us for 4 years. As far as I know it's now in it's 3rd home and still in very decent shape, so the quality is definitely there.

The northeast used to have a furniture chain called Huffman Koos which carried great furniture at good prices. We bought our huge sectional sofa there 14 years ago and it was finally was time to change it up after 3 kids and dogs and a lot of living on it. Huffman Koos is not around here anymore and I could not find the couch I wanted anywhere so after a year of looking all over (online and in stores) I settled on a sectional from Raymour & Flanigan which is also huge but not quite as comfy as our old one. We have large holiday gatherings so I needed something that would fit a large group. Our old sectional was fabric and the new one is leather. The two ends are power recliners.

We have bought furniture at all sorts of different places. We got our current living room, dining room table, and 3 bedrooms worth from Rooms To Go. Not all at the same time, just through the years when we've wanted to replace it. Our kitchen table and chairs came from a local furniture store as well as our dining room cabinet. Other odds and ends we have just gotten at local stores when I see them.

As the OP mentioned, it is partly based on where you live. If you don't live near any furniture stores, you have less options. Buying LARGE pieces of furniture online can be a challenge since shipping can be pricey and make sure to read the fine print regarding if they 'drop ship' (i.e. they literally drop it on your driveway) or will they will actually carry the item into your house? Disposing of old furniture can also be a challenge since local rules tend to vary on what the trash collector will take. Even if you have to drive a distance, it might be worth the effort since you can discuss shipping and disposal with the store along with seeing actual fabric samples. Shopping online for color samples doesn't always work out. Shipping may be free at some stores based on the amount you are buying.

When we recently purchased some new chairs, shipping was free and the store agreed to dispose of our old chairs for us which made things a LOT easier.

Pottery barn for couches and long term furniture like dining room table/chairs and bedroom furniture. IKEA for bookshelves and media centers and other "accessory" furniture like bar stools and desks. We got our current coffee and end table from Pier 1. Target is the go to for storage benches/ottomans.

In my small town we have ONE furniture store. I have been putting off replacing my recliner sofa for about 5 years. I will get around to it eventually.

No single place. We've gotten large pieces at Scandanavian Designs, which is a west coast chain. Some stuff we bought at an small furniture retailer. We'll get some stuff at Ikea. Our A/V furniture was bought at clearance at some store closing sale at an A/V electronics store. If you like something, it shouldn't really matter where it came from.

One time I helped my dad order a microfiber recliner from Amazon. They were the direct sellers and the shipping was free.

Years ago there was a special Sears clearance outlet really close where I live - it was in Richmond, California. That place had some great deals although some stuff could be slightly damaged or missing parts. Lots of floor samples. My parents bought a refrigerator there that had a loose handle and was missing one of the covers on the bottom. We called up the manufacturer and they sent a repair kit for the loose handle and a replacement for the cover - all for free.

I don't know about upholstered pieces, but we bought two different bed frames online from Wayfair, and both were well made and arrived in perfect condition.

Lots of furniture stores here. Family owned, and chains like Ethan Allen, Lazy Boy, Ashley and of course IKEA so no shortage of places to buy.
I want EVERYTHING to last forever. We drove our family car 31 years, so that mindset applies to furniture too.
Our furniture is a hodge podge of inherited items sprinkled with items we have purchase. Our newest furniture would be our couch and recliner bought last year. The couch replaced a 36 year old one purchased from the now Defunct Sofa Factory. Fabric was still perfect, survived 2 kids and 5 cats, but the foam cushions were breaking down. Of course they had a life time replacement warranty, and were replaced once about 20 years ago, but a life time warranty does no good if the company is no more.
Our Living room leather topped coffee table and end tables were purchased by the parents when they got married in 1950 so they are 70 years old. There is a marble table in there that the owner of the house my parents bought in 1950 left behind, it has a date of 1923 written on the bottom, so it is nearly 100 years old.
Our Family room coffee table and end tables were my MILs, so they are at least 50 years old.
Our oak dining room table and roll top desk we purchased when we bought our house 37 years ago.
Our guest room dresser and head board were purchased by my wife's parents when they got married in 1955 so they are 65 years old.
And our headboard and dresser were purchased by my wife when she moved out on her own 40 years ago.
Quality furniture is NEVER out of style.

I shopped everything local this summer for a couch and really could not find what I wanted. I ended up buying a couch on-line from Costco and it worked out great. It seems like great quality so far.

They do usually have sectionals in stock if you can get to a Costco to check them out. They have a wider variety in January. If you order on-line, the shipping is included in the cost.

We have bought most of our furniture at Haverty's and have been pleased. We are going to be in the market for a new couch soon and I am going to go to a local place that sells Flex-Steel because I've heard those couches last forever.

Well, I live in North Carolina, so we're spoiled for choice. And I'll be honest, before we moved here, I had heard about quality furniture from NC, blah, blah, blah--never took it very seriously. Then, once we moved down, we needed a new bed for the master bedroom. We went to a custom furniture place, literally around the corner from our house. Wow. It truly was custom, and made to order, even though it was all wood, versus picking the fabric on a sofa. Let me tell you, that bed is gorgeous. And solid! It's a massive piece--king sized, platform bed with a tower on either side, pull-out drawers and shelves, mirrored back with lighting. Very fancy!

I've heard of people making pilgrimages to NC just to get furniture, and I've also heard of people ordering it to be delivered. I don't know that I'd be comfortable with the latter, depending on the size of the purchase involved.

Besides the bed, most of our furniture was picked up at standard furniture stores--serviceable, but nothing special. However, we do have a few other, special pieces. DH's mother's father was an upholsterer, and we have several chairs that he made. We acquired them when MIL went into assisted living. Our couch was designed specifically for my FIL. This furniture will be around, long after I'm gone. We have a chair for each of our children, then DS23 has claimed the couch--he's the same height his grandfather was, while DS14 is 2" taller and still growing. Someone will inherit the matching ottoman from hell--seriously, if you stub a bare toe on that thing, you'll be in tears. I don't know what the carved legs are made out of--titanium, maybe? Ouch!

So, OP, I don't know how much that helps.

No single place.
Same here. We bought our sofa/recliners at Ashley Furniture. Dining room table at Orchard Hardware (not sure there are of those left around), and dining chairs at Ikea. Mattresses for our bed we bought at a local mattress store, while for the other beds in the house we got them at Big Lots.

I do prefer to buy in person. I like to sit/lie on whatever I'm buying to try it out. Returning a couch bought online just seems too much of an issue.

:goodvibes I'd need you to post pictures of your stuff before I could agree with your second statement.

So far I've used Wayfair & Amazon, I've looked locally, and at Walmart, Overstock, Lowes and Home Depot. With the exception of a dresser I had before every single piece of furniture in my dwelling was purchased online and delivered straight to my door. Not cheap stuff, either. Every piece is solid wood, and the couch is leather. Compared to what I have seen locally I have as good or better quality for a lower price.

Well, when my mom passed away 7 years ago and we had an estate sale, all that furniture that we were keeping is what everyone wanted to buy.
